Older Larder Ass

6/2/11 5/3/1 Bench(3) cycle 16
3d day in a row, i am, like, unstoppable

235x 7 (big improvement over my 225x 5 debacle)

also, decided to do Dan John’s single arm db bench and military as my bench and military accessories.

55x 7/7/7 each arm.

Note that there is a pretty huge imbalance in my supporting structure. Doing right hand was solid, doing left hand my body was squirming and rolling all over. obviously need to be doing these. Also need to do more single let stuff, there was an article here a couple weeks ago with some ideas I will try to incorporate.

because it would be a shame not to.

There is a highland games on 6/11, and since I can’t throw, i have offered to judge. I haven’t heard back. I am very excited about this.

Walked twice on thursday, in the early am, and again at lunch time. not too long, but getting going.

Today is friday, and I walked for 25 minutes this morning. I am ingraining the walk in the morning habit, and feel good about that. that was my longest walk so far. hip is still a little stiff from deadlifting wed, but doesnt really “hurt”. all in all, things are going well.

there will be no lifties today, and maybe not tomorrow, due to the boy’s swimming meet.

Good job, looks like its all coming back fast. I see you are looking to get the guns in shape for the beach.

I’ve got myself a new bottle of Jim Beam and will dedicate my first drink from it to you. Have fun at your son’s swim meet.

Drink (a little) harder
eco

Thank you. i have a new bottle of rye, and I will love you similarly

so, I am in laramie wy, the fortress of swolitude. i didn’t have to work late, and no one would go drinking with me. I ran out of excuses, and lifted.

it was a foul and terrible experience. someday, someone will write about it, and it will be a story not unlike the “old man and the sea”. only sadder. and more terrible. and sad.

so, I took a few days off for swim meets and my wife’s birthday, so I was moderately rested (7 hours of driving followed by a 1 hour meeting followed by 2 hours of geeking notwithstanding).

Front Squats
gawd what a fooking joke

so, I go in and roll and roll and roll. lax ball for the buns. pvc for the it bands and quads. softball for the adductor/psoas/rectus femoris tendon insertion thing, which is the source of all my current woe.

As a note here, nothing really hurts like rolling the quads/it band with a softball. no bueno.

anyways, so I got my muscles all pliable and shit, and put on my little lifting booties with the heel lifts, and proceeded to do some really deep oly style front squats.

BW, wanted to test depth and stuff, felt pretty good.

bar, hit a triple, form was decent, good depth, nothing tore off the bone, looking good.

95, hit a triple, still looking and feeling good, keeping back erect, nothing in the hip tore loose.

135, bad fucking idea. scared of the weight, started leaning forward like regular squat, ass and back seized up, hit maybe 1/8 depth, which is to say I bent my knees.

95, hoping that I haven’t done any permanent damage, thinking i can hit some reps here, groove the action, get some practice, ass and back having none of it, cannot even approach depth.

good mornings. did 10 with 95lbs. even that didn’t go well.

step ups on a 10 inch box
as if. 2 felt like something wanted rip off and take some bone with it.

rolled out a little, adding insult to injury, packed my shit, and went to the chinese buffet to lick my wounds.

back at the hotel, regretting the buffet as i always do. heart racing as my body tries diligently (and unsuccessfully) to digest too much food of too little quality.

if I don’t stay up too late watching tv, i’ll get up and take my little walk, and lean on my prowler. Or, maybe i’ll drink a shitload of rye, and wake up late and not shave before work.

you never know how these trips will turn out

Considering all your ailments, your “never say die” attitude is inspiring.

That’s right! Never say die! Say Suffer Endlessly!

and in that vein, I tried to go for my morning walkies today, and the back wasn’t having any of it. my walk lasted all of 5 minutes, and I must have looked 100 years old.

militaries and prowler this nabend

I lied

I did not do military press last night. I was successful at talking myself out of lifting. I felt pretty foul.

This morning though, was borderline heroic. not only did I walk my fat ass for 20 minutes, I followed this up with 10 pushes of the prowler. No load, just the prowler. did 4x 10 yards and 6x 20 yards. Just that small load (30 lbs) pushing in a bent over position did get my heart rate up and all that. However. pushing an unloaded prowler, even with the high friction wooden skids, is not getting it. so tomorrow morning, I will come to our little office gym and grab some plates for the pushing, and see what its like with some weight.

I have some ideas on how to make some home-made 80lb weights that I can just leave at the park. What do we know that weights 80 lbs? a bag of concrete. I just need to find something to use as a form, with a 2" pipe in the center. It will prolly be a month or two before I do this. I would like to avoid carrying a bunch of plates in my car all the time, but there is no way I am leaving my plates at the park. On the other hand, a couple lumps of concrete with handles would probably not be messed with…

Last weekend.

Judged my first Highland Games. Free lunch, free shirt, 100 bucks, bags of fun. Dude set a world record, 20’3" in the 56# weight over bar. I was judging on another field, so I am not sure what division he was throwing in. I just heard it over the loudspeakers.

I judged the novice division. There is nothing scarier than standing closely behind someone holding a caber for the first time. The rest of the events were easy. I HAD A BLAST, and I wish I could do this every weekend. They had great prizes, so Harry would have been loaded with gelt if he had come. medals for 1st, 2d and 3rd place in each event (9) for each division. Plus, first place in each division got a broadsword, 2d and 2d in the division got dirks, and since it was the “National Sheaf Toss” championship, winners of the sheaf in each division got a hand-blown glass vase with cash in it. We had a not-small individual in the novices win each event (his technique was bad, but he was strong as an ox), so he got 9 gold medals, a broadsword, and a vase with cash in it.

I must not have sucked too bad, cuz the director invited me to judge at his next big games, which is in July. So, if Erik doesn’t have a swim meet, I’ll be all over that like a hobo on a ham sammich.

You know if you do nothing else but prowler pushes I’d imagine you’d get great results.

yay for judging
I think that would suit you well.

as for concrete, what about a bent up piece of rebar?

its cheap as dirt and easy enough to bend

maybe a bunch of prowler pushing and kettle queer stuff is what you need

This is my theory too. i hope it works, because I am not doing much else right now.

I think maybe you are correct in this. I am thinking of adding back in some KB swings, especially on nights that I can’t lift due to swim meets. It doesn’t take me long to wear myself out on those.

prowler pushes this morning. 2 days in a row. man I wish I had the testicles required for consistency…

anywhoo, prowler + 20lbs, 12x 40 yards. I am thinking that each day I will add 20 lbs and 2 pushes until I can’t complete the workout. Shouldn’t take long.

yesterday weighed 301
this morning weighed 298.

doesnt mean shit, but its nice to see the number go down. Millies tonight if the iron gods are kind. maybe even some kettlefag swingthings

What are you pushing the prowler on? grass or tarmac?

Glad the judging went well, sounds like a lot of fun.

tarmac for the prowler.

Judging a Games was a pile of fun. Sadly, the biggest games (and where they pay the judges the best honorarium) are on the same day as a swim meet for the boy, so I can’t go to that one. But there are a lot of smaller ones, and I will do damn near anything for free lunch and a t-shirt

I wasn’t expecting a great night since it had been so long since any pressing occurred. After reading dan john’s article, I thought I might get strong if I started doing push press, so I’ll be adding a couple sets of these after militaries. pretty weak.

Also thanks to Danny, I have added single arm stuff to combat imbalances. No imbalance in pressing. I wish I could say the same for bench, which is significantly unbalanced.

Started building one of my homemade prowlers for one of my throwing pals. I’ll push my own in the morning.

forward harder
old lardass

last night I was experimenting with a design issue in my homemade prowler. It didn’t work, and the “horn” rolled forward too bad for me to push. so I got 2x 40 yds with 40lb.

I have a fix in mind, so its off to home depot.

Some interesting stuff going on right now:

  1. went to home depot and bought a tap (to add threads to a hole so you can screw a bolt into it. my idea on the fix worked.
  2. yesterday, delivered my prowler to a customer and fellow thrower. profited maybe $10? not a sustainable business, regardless of how fun it is.
  3. after 2 days off, pushed the prowler this am. 40lbs x 40 yards, x 12. lungs burning, i have hit my current limit, and everything I do from now on will be painful, and bear great rewards. As soon as I can get 20 pushes of 40 yards at this weight, I will add weight. the goal is to gain some level of fitness, so this is more of a “GPP” thing/weight loss thing than anything else.
  4. still not lifting as often as I want to.
  5. still have not purchased “5/3/1 for Powerlifting”. If I had charged $120 for that prowler, I could have.
  6. my brother in law thinks its cool that I am building prowlers, and offered to “loan” (give) me his 110v arc welder. this would make things much faster, and make my neighbors hate me because they are noisy.
  7. I really like numbered points
  8. On monday morning, after pushing the prowler, I weighed 301 lbs. Today, after pushing the prowler I weighed 191 lbs. I went hardcore on Atkins monday, and have stayed pretty well on the diet. it is a shame that I can’t for reals lose 10lbs of fat every 4 days. That would be so cool. I am pretty sure that if I can stick with the diet and prowlerizing, I can hit 250 in 2-3 months. I really think that I will start to feel human again at 250,
  9. as opposed to feeling like Jabba the Hut like I do now.
  10. next week will be spent in Laramie WY or as I call it, Sparta. I hate driving across the big empty, but I loves that little college town, and its shitty little bars.
