Old Skool Funk/Soul

Ok, we got the HipHop thread going on so I thought I’d bring some balance.

I’m talkin:

James Brown
The Meters
Delphonics
Maseo and the Macks
Kool and the Gang
The Detroit Spinners

even down to film scores by:
Chris Boardman

Lay it down suckas!

That is one hell of a play list…damn, you know your Funk and Soul…my compliments.

Let’s not forget:

Wild Cherry (Play that funky music)
King Curtis (Memphis Soul Stew)
Maceo Parker
Solomon Burk
That Dramatics
Nikka Costa
D’Angelo
The O’Jays
Parliament
Natalie Cole
Cameo

I’m surprised no-ones mentioned Curtis Mayfield. He’s a legend. Even when he was in The Impressions he was a cut above the rest. Pretty much anything on his Curtom label was shit hot.

Err…

Nobody mentioned

Earth, Wind & Fire!?!?!?!?!?

The Detroit Spinners - Ghetto Child
Evelyn Champagne King - Shame
The Miracles - Love Machine
Pointer Sisters - Automatic
Curtis Mayfield - Superfly
James Brown - Super Back (Pt1)
James Brown - Funky drummer
Maceo and the Macks - Across the tracks (such a cool track!)
James Brown - Payback

Gotta be the best genre for music.

Right, where are my 45s…

No Al Green, Stevie Wonder or MarvinGaye? WTF

You want old skool funk? Listen to Dyke and the Blazers, an old band from the sixties. That’s right, the sixties! If you like funky bass, this is the premiere! And we all know that funk is all about the bassman ( or wo-man!)

No shit. Those cats are the Rolling Stones of R&B. The horns, the vocal harmonies, and the slick production are second to no one. Don’t forget the non-stop stage antics and the simple, yet rock solid bass work of Verdine White, he’s the superglue that holds that band together.

Let me also mention,
One-hit wonder funk masterpiece: Firecracker by Mass Production. Go to Napster/Limewire/etc. and download that badboy.

Are they lesbians?
(not that there’s anything wrong with that)

He invented the wacka-wacka guitar. While touring with Impressions, Curtis had a chance to pass this technique on to a young man named James Hendrix…

I’ve got Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross playing right now.

Anyway, Dyke used to be a cool cat name for a guy waaaaaaaay back in the day…

What the fuck! We forgot another one! Jackson 5!

Sam Cooke

my life changed the day i heard “maggot brain” for the first time.
