Nobody mentioned
Earth, Wind & Fire!?!?!?!?!?
No shit. Those cats are the Rolling Stones of R&B. The horns, the vocal harmonies, and the slick production are second to no one. Don’t forget the non-stop stage antics and the simple, yet rock solid bass work of Verdine White, he’s the superglue that holds that band together.
Let me also mention,
One-hit wonder funk masterpiece: Firecracker by Mass Production. Go to Napster/Limewire/etc. and download that badboy.
Funny story, i heard the A famous promoter who booked the Rolling Stones first American tour. He said he was looking for an opening act for the stones. His assistant said he had this new band they called themselves “the elements of nature”. They were cheap so he booked them. Opening night the group gave the correct name to the announcer.
“Ladies and gentlemen… Earth Wind and Fire”
Damn, what a show that must have been!

What the fuck! We forgot another one! Jackson 5!
DUUDDE! I saw the Jacksons about a year before MJ came out with Thriller. That was one of THE top concerts of my life! This was about 1981 or 1982. The tickets were $12 each. The tickets for the Thriller tour were $30, which was outrageous for that time.
Someone else we forgot: The Ohio Players
You are bad, bad, missezzzz…

Killer.
The whole P-Funk scene is by FAAAAR my favorite. Parliament, Funkadelic, and George Clinton never dispapointed me. At their best (One Nation Under a Groove, Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome) they’re absolute genius. I can’t even begin to comprehend how those songs were written, rehearsed, and recorded. Absolutely stunning.
Dusty Springfield has also been a favorite of mine.

I like soul with a capital “S”
You guys are forgetting Isaac Hayes
I megaditto every single artist on here.
Also need to mention The Brothers Johnson. Get the Funk outa my face. Haha.
Other greats: KC and the Sunshine Band, Commodores, Average White Band, Jamiroquai (although not “old skool”, and not specifically soul/funk).
And a reinforced mention for Sly and the Family Stone. “Higher” from the Woodstock documentary is UNREAL. That is all.
