Old MM2K Bench Program

LOL this is an epic bump but I did this program back in 1999 I want to say

I was 15 and about 150-155 pounds I think I went from 175 for an ugly max to doing it for a comfortable triple. Respectable progress for a short period (6 weeks?) but remember being super pissed off because I was expecting to get that 225 by the end LOL

I probably would have had better progress but this was leading up to high school wrestling season so I was doing a lot of cardio also and trying not to gain any weight.

There are probably better programs though - I remember this involved a lot of heavy negatives which can be helpful but very easy to overdo and compromise recovery.

I think dudes in the past used too much weight on Negatives.

After messing with them for awhile I don’t think you need to go Supra Maximal on them.

If you just use more weight than you do on “regular” sets (maybe 90% ish) you’ll get the Strength/CNS gains without blasting your joints. And from there you can slowly progress to get something out of it

Since you mentioned Westside I seem to remember from an old video they had a device called “weight releasers” essentially you would attach them to the bar on a squat and at the bottom the additional weight would rest on the floor and you would do the concentric half of the lift with a lighter weight.

I never tried it and not sure if Westside Barbell gym still uses it but seemed like an interesting idea

Probably easier to post a video than describe in text

In modern times there’s also the “Hatfield Squat” to get under heavier than normal weights.
