What sucks is feeling like you’re ‘giving up’ during your workout. My knees were talking to me yesterday, so I called it quits on some squats. I keep telling myself it’s the smart thing to do and I’m better off in the end than if I push through and injure myself, but…it still sucks.

And while I’m at it, wwwwwwwaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh booooo hoooo !!!

3/17/09 St Paddy?s Day DE Bench
Speed bench
205x 3/3/3/3/3/3/3/3/3/3
2x 235/265
1x 285/305 (20 lb workout pr, current 1RM)

Close Grip Bench
3x 225/245/255/255 (10lb PR for heavy pair of triples)

1 arm db triceps extensions
35x 10/10/13 ^ (new rep PR) supersetted with

1 arm hammer kerlz
40x 10/10/10^ (new rep PR)

Front Plate Raise
55x 10/10/13^ (new rep PR)

This was an awesome training session for me. First time I have PRed in every exercise. Bar speed is feeling a little better at 205, but not quite ready to go up. Couple more weeks. The template called for a heavy single after speed bench. 285 was the most I?d ever hit at the end of a workout before, and 305 is my current tested 1RM. 305 came up a little slow, but nice and smooth with no hitches. I?ll test again in about 4 more weeks, at the end of my cycle, but I expect to smoke 325. What really excited me is that I turned around and hit a new PR for pair of triples in CGB. The extra triceps work may be paying off. Also new rep PRs for each of my accessories, so I get to increase weight in all of them next week.

Feeling pretty smug and full of myself right now. So long as Meatwinkle, Bunzilla, Hel-on-wheels and Ecoterror dont come and remind me how much more than me they bench 8*)

I?m happy with my recovery from the whininess last weekend. I dont know if it was cuz I was trying to do too much, or just not being able to sleep due to the ever-present financial issues, but I appear to be back on track.

Train More Smugly and Self-Absorbedly,
john

Freakin’ awesome John! Gotta love days like this, walkin’ around with a little smile twitchin’ at the corner of your lips… PR on every movement… sweet!

After reading this, I feel like hittin’ the gym right now on my day off.

Hmmm… where is my gripper thingy…

Nice bench bro!

3/19/09 ME Squat
Low Box Squat
2x 45/95/135/185/225/275/315
1x 345/375/385
4x 275
Dimel Deadlift
165x 20/20/13

Such an excellent p-chain smoking session, I quit here with my ass in flames.

This took an hour, and I had to get back to the office for a meeting. Hopefully, I?ll be able to hit at least some of the accessories first thing tomorrow am.

I met another powerlifting-type guy at the gym today named Cody. We could be twin brothers from a different mother. Not really, but we are both 45, and does high rep squats at my max. We introduced ourselves and spent a few minutes mocking some guys making large noise and moving small weight.

All and all, a nice time at the gymnasium.

As always, thanks tons for your support!

Train F%#%ing Harder,
John

I liekd train more smugly.

Good work on the squats cool to have found
another powerlifter type at the gym

your box squats are getting bigger

Thanks, K. I was a little frustrated today. my lack of hip flexibility doesnt let me get to the low box with a wide stance, so I have to go narrower. I know I’m not sitting back far enough, and I’m using too much quad. sure feels good to have poundage on my shoulders, tho!

I’ve kind of submitted to the reality that when I squat I have to use a narrower stance and a lot of quad. My training is going to include leg presses to develop that VM as it seems to have a large role in getting me out of the hole…

yeah, I’m thinking I’ll start adding in some front squats for that. I’d like to get out nice and wide, but the racks are narrow, so Id need to do it outside the rack like I do speed squats. I wish they had one wide power rack and one long PLing bar for squats and sumos.

I know I can get my hips flexible enough, but I’m more concerned about the strength of my hips at the bottom. It doesnt do any good to get wide and low if you cant make the weight stop 8*) On the other hand, I know Ill never hit the big numbers if I cant make the ass-ham connection.

OL

If I pull sumo or squat too wide my hips kill me.
so I do narrowish ass to grass.

I have to work allot on flexibility-I want to have mobility as I get older.

I spend a bunch of time on my hips-
90/90 stretch foam and stuff like this video

ignore the moby look alike and look at the 2nd and really the 3rd stretch.
if its too hard you can do them off a bench…sitting

Thanks, K, I’ll give it a try.

I was looking back on your training John. It is looking good, with lots of intensity.

Keep it up!

Barry likes the foam roller too! Solid work all around MJ.

3/21/09 ME Bench
Floor Press:
3x 45/95/135/185/225/245
1x 265/285/295(arching grunting and cheating was necessary to get this)
3-board press:
3x 135/185/225/255/275/295
JM Press:
3x 135/185/225/245/245/245(only got 2 on this last one)
Incline DB Press
70x 10/8
Supersetted with Hammer Kerlz
50x 10/6

A pretty awesome triceps destroying session. I was happy to get in the JM presses after floor and 3-boards. I decided to go only with sets of 3 on the 3-board since that is my lockout exercise. I decided that a 3 board would be the best lockout exercise for me. Doing pin presses is just too far out of the groove, and the 3-board feels like it is my regular bench groove.

My t-rex arms are so short that there would be no ROM at all in a 4-board. I will prolly try to get a 3-board max during the next week 2 weeks cuz my main exercise switches to db ball press. I think instead of just doing sets of 20 on the ball press, I?ll add one set of 10. The weight that I can handle for 20 is just plain embarrassingly low. By adding a set of 10, I can save some ego?

In the meantime, I have discovered (or finally admitted to myself) that my bench form really sucks. I have a tendency to flare my elbows at the bottom instead of keeping them tight. I am probably not concentrating enough on spreading the bar, or I?m just a weakling-pussy boy.

I did not do my make-up accessory work for ME Squat day last week. Also, I had to skip seated db cleans and leg raises on ME Bench day, and I won?t be able to make these up either. I think we are just going to have to accept that ME days take 2 hours, and we just need to drag our large and aging buttocks into the gym a little early on those days.

Still trying to figure out the meaning of life? I continue to be satisfied with my progress (I get to test maxes again in about 3.5 weeks), but if I had the time to do all the accessories I would be better off. I also wish I had more time for GPP, but I am only averaging 1.5 sessions per week with the sled. Its still snowing today, so there will be no DRAGGY-SLED today.

Figure It Out Harder,
john

Jimmy and Jwilly, thanks for your support! doing this stuff wouldn’t be anywhere near as much fun if I didn’t have the old folks home to share it with! Theres really no one in the real world that I can talk to about it, or that would understand it.

Bench is looking strong MJ. I also wish I had more time to do more GPP work.

Ever since I found this site my training and motivation has increased. It’s great to follow others as they struggle along their choosen path. Just knowing you’re not alone out there is a comfort. Not to mention the caliber of person on this forum can’t be beat, matched maybe. Stay strong!
