Willing to bet retiring will feel like falling off a cliff, or taking the last law school final. I think everyone has the same initial reaction, and it wears off. You’re honestly too young to retire. Maybe call it “changing careers”?
At least find something to occupy your newfound leisure which won’t include tv. My EXXON friend tells me guys he knew there who retired, watched tv for 6 months, and then died.
Maybe consider personal training?
I have a family photo of my great uncle Henry standing in a photo with El Capitan in the distance behind him. Henry was sleek to say the least. Broad shouldered, then a taper to his waist. I doubt he ever touched a weight, but he looked like he was a dude. (The photo was probably snapped in the late 40s.
I knew Henry after he retired. (He traded currency for Bank of America in San Francisco.) Literally he was a shrunken little man, just sitting on the couch. He had gone from 6+ feet to probably 5’ 6" and no muscle tonus. Quite a shame.
I attend a statewide association meeting for sheriff’s and police chiefs. Two years ago a former chief put on a class about retirement. He said not to look for a job for at least 90 days. That gives the person time to flush it all away. As an executive you are going from 100 to 0 MPH.
That’s my plan. I’ll go back to work at some point, but I don’t want a 9 to 5. I still have my second job as an adjunct instructor. I’m going to continue that. I also am the chair of a statewide law enforcement labor organization. I will continue running that.

I got a really good arm pump tonight.
Those arm pumps are, as we used to say, Bitchin’ Disco. I am not sure where that even came from. But good job!
That should be plenty. Flushing it all away… Jeez.
Over 30 years of seeing things that people would not believe. Over 30 years of being on 24/7. Over 30 years of going from extreme boredom to extreme stress.
I have seen people at their worst and things that I will always carry with me. It’s time.

Today was the day. I walked around and said goodbye to my staff. I then received my retired ID, and turned my stuff in. I cleaned up my office and hopefully left in good shape for the next person.
I then hit the gym for leg day. Now I’m going outside to enjoy a Cuban and some whiskey. We’re taking the family out of town this weekend to celebrate.
Congratulations!
Congrats indeed- it’s a huge accomplishment.

I enjoyed a good cigar and good whiskey last night. I also burned all of my business cards. Today starts a new chapter and different challenges.
Congratulations!
Ok YOUNG man. All that’s behind you. Whatever’s next won’t include boredom. Congrats.
Thanks
Nope. This is not a sit on my ass thing. It’s just a change. I’m thankful that I have a good pension, that includes healthcare. I’m still going to be really busy, but just a lot less stress.

My first retirement workout almost included a broken foot. I got sloppy and tossed the EZ bar down. It landed right on my right foot. It still hurts.
I cut things short, because I had an appointment at the Ford dealership to complete a recall on my truck. I got home and finished with a walk down my road.
