I expect you to pop a national total this weekend, bud. It’s about time. I’ll be seeing you there this weekend.
You guys must give an update :)
I had a shitty day, only hit my openers. Got it on video but not sure I feel like sharing haha.
Nice to meet you brah!

Its weird seeing T-Nation people in real life.

Too bad about the lifts. Unfortunately I only hit 98/119. Not enough to make Nationals. But its a vast improvement from my last competition and I hope to see big PRs soon.
It was nice meeting you too, man. One of these years you and Avocado (who it seems has long since disappeared from here) need to get your shit together and head on down to nationals haha. Just keep on keepin on.

damn koing, did you eat all that before the weigh in??

do you have trouble with your glasses flying off your face? i should wear mine but i don’t in the weights room. guess that works okay, but people do think i’m a bit of a snob for ignoring them sometimes.

nice lifting. congrats on the PB

Crazy man. Going to hammer FS first then C&J on Mon and Wed the week after next. Going to see how I get on, I’m up to C&J 87% of my FS 1RM. I have a comp again this Saturday LOL. 2 comps in a week and my last one before that was on the 19th Feb. This time, DON’T EAT TOO MUCH BREAKFAST!
Man youre competing a lot! About time you picked up your squats
Love competiting

I’d like to think I can C&J about 150-151-152 with my current strength levels of 170/190 but yeah I’m going to FS first from now on. I did 170 yesterday which was punishing, but it was 2 days after a comp so in a few weeks I’ll get a better indication of where my FS is at. Failed 172 :stuck_out_tongue: and the doubles at 150 felt a lot harder as well. I have some rounding of the upperback issues that I’m going to sort out also so that should be cool.

I ate all of tha AFTER my weigh in…that was the issue. I think one portion would have done…felt so stuffed when I was warming up.

My glasses fit fairly tight to my face.

135x my right arm slipped out and I hit myself in the face almost knocking myself out, still squated up with one arm holding the bar. Didn’t even attempt to rerack and dot he Jerk as that would have been epic and I wasn’t in the condition to after the FS.

It’s pretty lame that I can 150 for double is hard when I C&J 148 about 2days ago. It always feel so much easier on a comp day with adrenaline pumping. When I can start hammering on 180/190 that should give me plenty of strength.

Two portions of anything doesn’t sound like that much to me . . . but I’m a borderline fat guy, what do I know. As a side note, I’ll normally put back 2-3 protein bars and somewhere around 2-2.5L of gatorade/protein between weigh-ins and competition.

I also train/compete in glasses all the time. Mine also fit fairly tight to my face (big fat head I guess), and the only time I’ve ever had them come off was when I smacked myself in the face with an empty barbell haha.

So the wrist is finally feeling good. Now I just need to get over it mentally and commit to catching the snatch w/fully extended wrists so I won’t miss in front.

The good heavy misses were either in front or bent elbows. The makes were when I committed to lay back my wrist and getting the bar back over my shoulders and head up - and go figure - my hand didn’t fall off - so maybe I can get over this whole ‘my wrist hurts’ excuse making and timidness.
CLEAN & JERK
kinda rushed these as coach and I were the only lifters tonight and he started earlier than I did, hence he was finished and had other items to attend to.

110 PR was planning to only clean it - but I was aggressive enough and made the entire lift
Wow - only 11.5 months of training to finally get a bar with >body weight from floor to over my head. To quote Neil Peart, " I’m a slow learner but a good practicer!"
Missed a 115 clean attempt.
95 - good clean and jerk
FRONT SQUAT
112.5/2x3
115/3
supposed to do 4 doubles w/115 but I forget that little red plate on the left side of the bar for the first three sets - even though it did feel weird - like I said earlier, “I am a slow learner”.

Now - I am back to 80/81 on my snatch, which was my ‘make every time’ weight and I’m close to getting back to my old 85 PR - I think once I get the whole wrist/catch thing out of my head 90 will arrive shortly thereafter -plenty of pull and plenty of strength to stand up.
As well - I am on the hook for getting a 110 jerk again Thursday evening just to prove this wasn’t a fluke.
Hitting a 200 comp. total before end of May is now in my sights then maybe PAN-AM Masters this summer in GA… I’d like to go and see John Broz’s attempt at a record clean & jerk and visit a co-worker and do some target shooting.

As you do the FS more often, try taking bigger jumps. You want most of your volume to be in 90% range. Do a general dynamic warmup and some body weight squats before you jump into the bar, but once you take the bar load it fast. This ties into the adrenaline aspect youre talking about.

If youre not used to big jumps, theres an ‘oh shit’ factor that causes you to pay attention and get your adrenaline going. So next time, try 70, 120, 145, 160, then 165/170 (or both) depending on how you feel and beyond. I told you those doubles would be hardest part

Thanks my friend! I am afraid 40 years old = Masters according to the calendar and not according to any loose definition of the world ‘master’

For my age/weight, 105/40-44, I need a 200 total to qualify to lift this summer @Pan-AM Masters. This is my intermediate goal. Mid-term goal - 225 total before I age out of the 40-44s and qualify for World’s.
Ultimate goal would be a body weight snatch and 105/130 (these are numbers a guy in my gym similar in size had as a lifetime best, so I figure they are good to shoot for. Even better I would like to be able to to 86/108@60 years of age which he just did a few weeks ago!)

Form is finally coming together so, I think if I can keep my wrist healthy I am on the cusp of figuring out a few thing and suspect my numbers will continue to climb.

I never do jumps like that on front squats…I’ll give it a go tomorrow and my back rounds a fair amount on the way up. I’m going to have to work on that but it’ll come as I front squat more.

I always do some bw squats before the bar

Do you have to compete to get the qualifying total? How does that work?

I looked up the women’s 35-39 for 63 kgs and it’s 80 kgs which seems doable for me, which is surprising so I think I must have my math wrong or something. I tried to find last years results but the PDF link I found seems to be broken.

Here’s the link to this year’s meet entry form:
http://www.mastersweightlifting.org/forms/2011_pan_american_masters_entry.pdf

The form lists the qualifying totals (you are correct 80 for 63/35-39). There are also opening totals - 70 is your listed example - i.e. your total for your opening snatch and clean/jerk attempts must meet this minimum total (you will provide this at weigh in).

The form also requires you document your qualifying total(see page 5)–>
Best Total between 6/10 and 5/11 with the name and date of meet.

So, a lifter (you or I) would need to have achieved the corresponding qualifying total in the last year at a recognized meet (club meets, if part of your country’s federation, count).

There you go, now that you have your shoes - all you need to do is join your national federation, and lift in a meet before the end of May totaling over 80kg then you can plan a ‘working’ summer vacation in GA in July - if you are so inclined. They were originally scheduled for Montreal but for some reason the bid was withdrawn and Howard Cohen in GA came through to save the meet this year!

Note, that there are also American Masters every year in November but don’t think you can only lift as a Master. Jim Storch is over 35 but lifted in the Open class at the Arnold this year! I do not believe the November meet has a qualifying total but you need to have lifted in at least one meet in the prior year to participate.

Do it Debra!!!

I’m not sure I’ve ever had a bacon egg roll, and I’m assuming chips are fries? In any case, I’m gonna have to take your word for it.

As for my fluid intake, I normally take down about 3L pre-peri-workout, and I’m generally a tad dehydrated when I weigh in so it’s normally an issue. Standard comp procedure for me is 3 1.5L bottles of water I mix with my proprietary, scientifically proven mixture of gatorade powder and whey protein powder. Start drinking right after I hit the scale and by the time the comp’s over I’m usually almost done all 3 bottles. No bloating problems whatsoever.

If youre rounding then you need to keep tighter and get stronger. Just do singles up to your max. You need to get used to firing on command that way you dont miss those heroic third attempts you try at meets sometimes.

It was my first FS in about 4-5 weeks. I just hammer the back squats, but now it’s a shift to fronts so it’ll take my body a few weeks to get use to it.

I definitely need to keep tighter and get stronger.

I rarely bail the Cleans at comps, it’s the Jerks, but I guess coming out of the Cleans easier it’ll help me out more.

Take a look at my rounded back front squats! lol, going to fix this as I get stronger.

Right, if your rack position is stronger then the clean feels like nothing and you have more energy left to jerk. Def need to stay tighter on the squat, and dont go slow even if you feel tired, just let yourself drop as if catching a clean.

On the cleans, try to keep your butt lower and really use your back off the floor and through the lift rather than just for extension. It makes for a less stressful lift once you get used to it.
