OK To Tell Kids They're Fat?

What you guys don’t seem to realize about the “at risk for being overweight” or however they phrase it category is that that terminology is actually correct for kids that are pre or peri-pubertal. It’s normal and healthy for kids to go through some weight fluctuations before growth spurts. How many of you know people who were pudgy at 10 and skinny at 12? I knew a bunch.

Of course there is going too far, though, hence the overweight category that should keep that name as well.

Security Guard: All right son, I’m going to need those two hams back.

Chris: I… I don’t have any hams.

Security Guard: Lift up your shirt son.

Chris: I need an adult. I need an adult.

Security Guard: You’re not a shoplifter, you’re just a fat kid. Sorry about that fatty, fat, fatty. Hey Tom, he’s just a fat kid. Aren’t ya fatty? He’s a big ol’ fat kid. Here’s some chocolate fatso.

Chris: Thanks.[/quote]

Hey! sir, you cant park your van there… oh wait, sorry, just a fat guy. we’re clear- just a fat guy.

I say be straight up with them and confront the problem…With a solution!!

My father used to berate me for being fat in my younger years…but never once did he include any type of solution (sports, eating habits, etc).

I’m not being a bitter bear or anything, its just that children respond to problems incredibly well when they are given a solution. Problem is, too many parents are too lazy to do anyhting about it.

On a side note…how does a fat parent tell their kid that they are fat? How much more does the parents problem contribute to the child never finding a way out in those situations?

It all depends on the age of the kid. If he’s under the age of 12 then I think the parents need to be adressed. We need to get rid of all these damn x-boxes and PS2’s. What the hell happened to playing outside???

On another note, those “charts” they use are bullshit. My doctor has a similar chart in his office. According to the chart at my age (20) and Height (5’10") if I weight more than 160lbs I’m in the red zone. Who the hell made these charts, Ghandi??? If 140 is healthy for a 20 year old I think I’d rather be fat.

WTF?! I don’t think the 9 yo kid is buying her own groceries. How about instead of calling her obese and telling her she needs to lose weight, just TEACH her proper nutritional habits and don’t feed her junk.

I was fat as a kid and through part of my teens, and I still hold a little resentment toward my parents for it. I knew I was fat - I just didn’t know how to change it at the time. My mom use to buy “diet” food for herself and would get pissed if I ate “her” healthy food because I didn’t need to diet. Now she asks me for nutritional advice. What a world.
