OK, Let's Lift! And 1 and 2 and 1 and 2

had some fun with some things I don’t normally do, and set a couple PR’s.

Started with standing OHP and went for AMRAP at 135. I got 19 reps. Obviously a PR, don’t think I’ve gone over 10 reps before. That was pretty cool. I didn’t expect to get much past 10. After that I did 185x3.

Then I did incline bench, and did 225x7, then 275x2, then 225 for 3 more sets of 6. The 275x2 was definitely a PR. I doubt I’ve ever put that much weight on incline at all.

Then I did some ninja warrior stuff. I did some various bodyweight hangs in various positions and grips. These included 1 arm hangs, pull ups with an ‘open’ grip, pull ups with just my last knuckle hanging on, holds mid-pullup, and lateral movements with the various grips.

I suggested to my wife that I could be pretty good at the ninja warrior stuff, and that I could probably compete at a high level if I dropped a lot of weight from my legs but retained my upper body strength. She said my grip would be an issue, and I feel like that would be the last thing I’d have a problem with. This confirmed that to an extent. I was able to handle my bodyweight quite well with the various tests, and I believe if I dropped substantial leg mass, I would be much better. Something I’m considering if I ever lose my drive to squat heavy.

good session last night. really good actually.

worked up to a 455 paused squat for my first set, then decided to jump to 505 for a single. I wasn’t sure if I was going to get the 505 before I lifted it, but it ended up being a really, really fast rep. So I decided it was PR time. Jumped to 525. Grinder but I nailed it. Video below. 13 lbs PR. 197 bw right before heading to the gym after dinner, so probably sitting around 195 morning fasted weight.

Also did some reps with 315, but that’s not important.

Also:

I’m starting my ‘winter bulk’ next week, for anyone interested in following that. I believe I’ll have time to get at least 4 gym sessions in per week over the next few months. I’m also going to ensure that I eat enough to maximize growth.

I have fairly specific goals for this bulk.

  1. I will see 200 lbs on the scale for the first time in my life.
  2. I will bench press 385 lbs.
  3. I will squat 495.
  4. I will deadlift 605.

Yes, I realize these are lofty goals. My overall goal is to eventually total 1500 lbs in a meet before I retire from lifting. So that’s why these goals are what they are. This leaves me just short of 1500. I’m not suggesting I’m giving up lifting anytime soon, but I know I won’t be in my physical prime forever. I turn 31 in a month and a half. So the sooner I can hit some legitimately big numbers, the better I’ll feel.[/quote]

I posted this almost exactly a year ago… at this point I’ve met all but the deadlift goal, although I believe I’m capable of this now.

My goal is now 1600. That’s where I want to be the next time I do a meet. This can be done with a 650 deadlift, a 550 squat, and a 400 bench. So I’m basically looking at adding 25 lbs to squat and bench, and 50 to deadlift. Something along those lines. My gains may favor squat a bit more than what I’m predicting, but I felt like this was a reasonable baseline to work from. I suppose the timetable I’m putting on this is in a meet next summer. If I can do it sooner, I will. I would probably do a meet sooner if I felt I could put up a 1550 total. I’m aiming to do this in the 198 class, so I do have plenty of weight gain to play with, as opposed to in the past when I started above the intended weight class. Right now I’m waking up in the mid to high 190’s.

Nice job on hitting that squat PR and last year’s goals. Putting up 1600 will be awesome.

It would put me right about 25th for the 198 raw current list. Right now I’m 25th as a 181, so it would be cool if I could rank that high in 2 classes in the same year.

Really nice squat. Probably looked a lot easier than it felt, haha.

Question: did you know the dudes spotting you or no? Your rear spotter was fine, but the dude who just walked up on the one side of the bar looked like he was going to grab it with no accompanying spotter on the other side, which would have been bad news all around. I still remember flipping out on a football coach of mine in college for grabbing the bar (from the side!) near the end of a set of squats with no spotter on the other side. It was just a total lack of awareness. If that kid had grabbed the bar on you…

yea a few people have asked me about that on facebook, lol. when I did the rep at 505, he spotted on that side and another guy was on the other side, so I had 3 spotters. The other side guy left before I did 525, so I was just gonna use the back spot. My friends and I decided that if something had gone wrong and he had actually tried to do something, we could have posted the video on the internet as a crossfit fail.

Had a few bench PR’s on Friday night. Worked up to a 315x3, then 365x1, which was a gym PR. Meet best was 375, but I don’t believe I had done better than 355 in the gym. Then I hit a rep PR at 275x8. Also did dips, lateral raises, and band curls.

I still lift. Numbers haven’t really changed in the last month. I only made it to the gym about twice a week through October. October is a crazy month for me. I’ll be posting more soon.

Tried zercher squats last night. Kind of an automatic PR, but I hit 405 lbs. 405 paused zercher squat - YouTube

A couple training notes:

I attempted to deadlift 600 last week. I failed right at the knees. Really good speed off the floor, just couldn’t sustain it. I wasn’t planning on going for that weight yet, but 555 felt so good, I wanted to give it a shot. I’ll be there very, very soon. Pretty nifty milestone to be approaching.

Everything is feeling good right now. Getting more volume on bench press right now. For the last month or so, I’d been benching heavy, and doing dips for my volume for chest/triceps. It wasn’t really working, so I’ll be spending more time on the bench moving forward.

I’m weighing in the 190’s right now. I weighed 197 in the evening yesterday, no idea what my morning weight is.

Flipcollar - You’re lifts and physique progress are really impressive.

I just wanted to say, you have a really, really beautiful wife. I saw the pic, but didn’t want to encourage that thread to continue. As for pictures, I think it’s infinitely better if people will just be themselves here. I’m always skeptical of people who come to a BBing site and then never post any progress or lifting pictures, but seem to have lots of advice. Pics discourage the trolls. I know some people don’t want to post their face, but there are always ways around that. And I appreciate people sharing their real life experiences.

Hey, I really appreciate that! All of it!

Yea, that thread needs to die. I can’t believe it’s been going on for 6 weeks now. I really wanted to help Dave, but it’s just not something that can be done. I’m glad a few others got something out of it though. I wish it was possible to get him to stop going on about how young he looks, and his lack of beard. It’s incredible that he can’t get past that, particularly since he doesn’t even look young in the first place. And girls don’t generally give a shit about the things that he thinks are holding him back. So strange.

And yes, my wife is incredible. That photo I posted was actually for a photo shoot from before we got married, so that wasn’t her own dress. Although she’s actually had several opportunities to wear her real wedding dress for subsequent photo shoots. A photographer friend of ours loves shooting her, so she uses her as a model fairly often.

As for my own pictures I post, I have to agree. I probably shouldn’t include my face so much, but yea. It’s a bodybuilding site. If you’re going to give advice, it’s hard to have credibility if you don’t have pictures of yourself available. Plus it’s easier to remember who people are with pictures, lol.

Sharing my own experiences on here as been incredibly important to me. I think I have knowledge and insight that’s worthwhile, in and out of the gym. Plus, it helps me on my own journey to share. I’ve pushed myself to be open about the mistakes I’ve made because it helps me to be a better person, and not hate myself for the bad things I’ve done. And as far as the gym goes, the folks on here help me to keep going when I lose motivation. I want to get bigger and stronger for everyone who reads my log, everyone I interact with. This log in and of itself is great for accountability.

Anyway, thanks for popping in!

For sure. About sharing your life experiences, it’s a nice thing to do, especially when you’ve been in a similar position and have come through some adversity. Most of us have to learn a few things through the school of hard knocks, and I like people who have gotten over things. About pics of faces and/ or details about our families, it tends to keep things real.

Best to you and your little family, flip!

I did some bench pressing last night. Just worked up to a double at 315, then rep work at 225. My elbows and wrists were hurting like crazy, so I didn’t want to push very hard. After I left the gym, I realized I was probably just cold. Being in Texas, I forget what cold is like sometimes.

squats last night. a bunch of doubles at 405, then 5 sets of 10 at 275

Can’t remember all the recent details, but over the last week I bench pressed 345x1, deadlifted 545x1, snatch grip deadlifted 315 for sets of 3 (and these are stupidly hard btw), and squatted 475x1.

bench press last night. work capacity is really really good right now. time between sets was very short. Started with incline bench for warm up, and did a zillion reps. I think my first set was around 20 or so reps, with random pauses throughout the set. Didn’t count the reps. moved to flat bench, worked up to 315x3, 275x5, 275x5, 245x5, 245x5, 225x5,225x5. 5 or 6 sets of wide grip pull ups . lateral raises with 30’s, then 35’s. Then band tricep extensions with my pink band. then face pulls. bw approaching 200.

Guess I missed a couple sessions. They were good ones, so I’ll talk about them.

I did a leg day, and just used the hack squat machine. Worked up to 9 total plates. Did 1 set of 10, then did a drop set, where I did 5 reps at 9 plates, 8 plates, 7 plates, etc down to 0. Unreal pump. One of the most difficult leg sets I’ve ever done. Would have been impossible had I not been on a machine.

Also did an OHP workout. I’m strongly considering a strongman show in February, so my OHP could use some work. One of the events is axle clean and press, at 205 for reps. I hadn’t cleaned a bar in months, so I gave this a shot. Got 5 reps, could have gotten a couple more. Felt awesome about it. It wasn’t with an axle, but it was a good place to start. I also used shitty form on the clean, just kind of muscled up a power clean to simulate the axle form a bit, lol.

Got what will probably be my last squat session of the year done last night. I also missed logging a bench and squat session it seems. I benched 345 with a pause and great speed last week. I squatted 485x1. That’s feeling pretty good.

Last night I worked up to 405. Looks like I just did doubles at this weight last time, so this session was pretty nice, even though it didn’t feel like it. Did 405x3, 405x3, 405x6, 405x3. Then 2 sets of 315x10.
