biltritewave: I would have agreed with you about the reffing until last night when I saw Beckenbauer in an interview. He blamed alot on the players. They are totally out of control, diving at every opportunity, and doing stupid things (such as Figo’s head butt against Croatia). I personally hate the diving and the underhanded stuff that goes on. The players will not clean things up themselves, there needs to be rule changes that somehow take diving and fake injuries out of the game. I have no ideas, but it makes me sick. If you pull some of that stuff in rugby, you will eventually get caught in a ruck or a maul and get your just desserts. Unfortunately that doesn’t happen in football (soccer).
If a guy like Beckenbauer (who has tasted success in almost every aspect of the game) gives the players shit, people should listen and maybe decide if measures can be taken.

The irony of a tae kwon do practioner slating another sport for being pussy is just hilarious.
You don’t like football, fine, don’t watch it. You can rest assured that I won’t be watching any tae kwon do any time soon.
Now how about you fuck off you foolish old c*nt.
My picks for the semis:
Argentina vs Italy
England vs Brazil

These are good points. I think the increased number of cards and directives on diving, tackles from behind etc were a step made by Fifa to try to forcibly clean up the game. The trouble is that there has been some very inconsistent application of the guidelines by the referees in the tournament.
I would expect to see an upturn in performance of referees at this stage of the tournament as the worst ref’s have now been sent home.
Germany vs Argentina should be a great game, unfortunately I’m stuck at work so i will only catch the last few minutes. Being English I don’t have an affinity for either team (quite the opposite in fact) but I think it will be a great match and I wish Germany luck because
A) they’ll need it
b) everyone likes an underdog
c) I think it would be cool to have an England vs Germany Final 40 years after the last one.
Cheers

I never thought I’d say this as an Englishman but I have a new-found respect for the Germans and their team and if we don’t win the whole thing, I hope they do.
They have been professional. They have played the game properly, and how can you be mad at someone who’s fans like your team so much as well?
They’ve been great hosts by all accounts. Good luck to them today.
and they’ve just gone a goal down. bugger.
Beautiful, Germany are through.
Boring first half, but all in all what a match!
Well done guys - glad you are through.
i think i was at work through argentinas entire run. just found out we had a tv in the building to see them lose in pks. shit.
i am of german descent, but i studied abroad in buenos aires during the last world cup and really have a soft spot for the albiceleste. hard to root against the host, though.
wish i could have seen the game.
did they have their first or second string keeper in for the pks? i didnt make note.
I would love for you to have said that during the Holland game in down town Amsterdam, no amount of whatever the fuck figthing you do would have prevented you from getting killed that day.

Are you kidding me? I hate the fact that Holland is out, completely devastated even though we had a young team and I hate it even more that Germany is still in it. That is kicking a man while he is down.

It was a tough game with about sixty fouls.
Germany played technically desastrous. We were extremely nervous, made so many mistakes and yet - it’s good to know that even when you’re playing shitty you can beat them.
Klose once again proved why he is the most dangerous player of the cup(5 goals).
As anti-German as I am when it comes to soccer…I would hit it…haha.

So you could probably tell what’s the name or text of the song the argentinian supporters are singing during the matches. I heard it trough the whole Argentina vs. Holland match.
As for Germany winning the Quarters: Phew, that was really KLOSE!

Who said anything Holland? I actually had them in a company sweepstake so they had my vote - but that didn’t turn out well.
Anyway, I can’t be a dick - I’m happy Germany are through. They played a good game and deserve it.
Now if Brazil win then that’ll be perfect…money in the bag! And they’ve always been my favourite team anyway…
really pleased that Germany progressed. For starters tournaments are always better when the hosts do well in terms of atmosphere, and secondly and England V Germany final would just be fucking ace. I also have generally found Germans to be pretty cool people, (admittedly I am going off a small sample here) somewhat similar to ourselves in terms of outlook, but with worse haircuts.
I actually felt sorry for the Argies for a second, then they showed their true sportsmanship and class and attacked Bierhoff. They should ban the fuckers from the next tournament.
Tomorrow I am mostly cheering on France, and of course England - who are now by my reckoning the strongest team left in the tournament - or at least they would be if they pulled it together and actually played like they can.
