Official World Cup 2006 Thread

That call on Oneywu (especially in the 47th minute for the love of God) was dreadful. What was the ref even looking at? He had his hands down, there was some body contact and he made a clean play on the ball! And all of the Ghana players writhing around in “agony” to kill time towards the end of the game was incredibly lame - play and win your game, don’t be cheap about it.

But in the end, this one is all on the U.S. team and Bruce Arena, not the refs and not Ghana (who obviously played very well). Landon Donovan and Demarcus Beasley - Non-factors and utterly uninspired. And what exactly was Bruce Arena waiting for to putting in Eddie Johnson or put some more offensive pressure on??? WE WERE DOWN 2-1 AND NEEDED TO WIN! Can some please explain this logic to me???

Well, I’m off to find another team to root for the rest of the way through. Likely will be England.
Agreed. Utterly pathetic performance by our boys. Landon can’t say shit now when people call him “overrated” - why? because he is. He did absolutely nothing in the tournament.

I guess I will concentrate on my other team, the Spaniards. I do seem to be a glutton for punishment. But this team has lit the fires of illusion once again.

A good game by the Ghanians who seemed to be a lot more organized in the back than the other African squads. Let’s hope they can truly shock the world against the Brazilians.

us didnt play well at all but that call was shit…

johnson didnt do anything when he come on. for some reason no one wanted to even attempt playing a through ball and instead they kept trying to opt for crosses from the far corners which is fine except none of the crosses were even close to our target

donovan was anonymous. beasley played better and at least was trying his ass off. mcbride didnt do much other than that header which missed the post…

and reyna…WOW, thats something a three year old would have known not to do.

ghana played like a bunch of girls. I have watched a lot of soccer and i cant remember that much writing for nothing…there should have been 10 minutes of stoppage time
Ghana isn’t a good team at all, by international standards, and to get a beating from them is a poor effort.

Again with the “world’s most popular sport” bullshit. Using that rationale, I guess that Michael Jackson or Elton John must not be “gay” because they sold millions of records…

Schwanzfahrer do all Germans reason as badly as you?

WTF? Where on earth did that come from?
From you calling us “pussies.”

You are just jealous because England used to have an empire and now you have a slum.

He’s jealous the US doesn’t stand a chance in football.
Jealous my eye. Soccer is simply too gay for Americans. We play real sports like football.

Then why did you join the world cup then, huh?

Hey, Julius, on behalf of the many well reasoned American citizens who are tired of being lumped together with a small minority of jerks:

Don’t be a dick.

Penalty call or not, Ghana would have made it through with a 1-1 tie, since Italy won.

And writhing in agony or not, at least Ghana doesn’t fake it, which is much less than can be said for Brazil, Argentina, Italy, and others.

Overall a very poor WC for the United States. First of all, Landon Primadonovan IS overated. He tucked his tail between his legs and went home from Germany a few years ago without sticking it out and becoming a better player. He and the rest of the team are paying for that now.

It might be time to say goodbye to Arena. He’s done a good job in the past, but I think he’s taken the team as far as he can. I want us to look into getting Klinsmann after this WC is over. He already lives here so he’d reduce his commute by 6,000 miles.

Don’t forget about that other All American game known as baseball. That my friend is a “real” sport.

Yaeh, so is Ice Hockey. How great your nation is at losing to Europe at it in the Winter Olympics, considering they don’t even play it at a national level.

Come on, soccer isn’t gay and the US isn’t good at it. Just leave it at that.

This has to be the most retarded leap in logic I have read in a long time.

Look “Julius Caesar” (who was bisexual by the way) - we could give a flying fuck if you like soccer, think it’s gay or whatever.

I have no clue why you think that it has to be one or the other. Comparing soccer and American football is like apples and oranges - they are too completely different games. I really like the NFL too, in fact, I probably know more about it than you do, you fucking moronic troglodyte.

Stop trollin this thread with your inane bullshit. You only end making yourself come off like a bigger idiot than you have already shown yourself to be.

Have a nice day, numbnuts.

Bullshit. Ghana is quite good especially at the youth levels. (two U-17 titles and two 2nd place in u-20 world cups) Their current senior side is also good by any measure. They would give England a run for their money, just like they did the Italians and the Czechs.

The USA did turn in a poor effort - but there is little shame in losing to a class side like the Ghanians. They were outmatched, plain and simple. If it were Togo or something like that, then maybe you’d have a point.

Really, how come it’s the most popular youth sport in the US?

Moron.

The only reason more kids don’t stay with soccer is that usually the best athletes move on to other sports where the prospects of making serious cash are much better, like football, basketball, and baseball, hell, even hockey.

If there were money in US soccer - it would be bigger. Period.

Yo rsg, don’t take the rantings of my idiotic, xenophobic countryman to imply that he speaks for greater America.

True, many Americans are still ambivalent about the World Cup - but each WC the interest in the event is growing - much as these louts would hate to admit it.

The USA joined the WC because there are people in this country who truly enjoy the game and want to see the USA team do well.

Oh well, till 2010.

Here’s my take - is this debacle Arena’s fault or the fact that our so called best players are either too old or simply not good enough ?

I think this more a reflection of the scarcity of talent that ends up making through to the elite level in football in the US - the four major sports end up draining most of the talent, IMHO.

Cheers to the Socceroos!
That took a lot of heart to tie that game.
Congrats!

Now back to positive thoughts of Holland finally beating the Portugese!

Toronto is basically little Portugal and I can’t them honking their damn horns for hours on end…almost broke my heart when they beat the Dutch in the last Euro.
Redemption time!

All the States needs is a comeback from Alexi Lalas and it’s World Cup Gold all the way!!

At least you guys have more than one sport you’re good at. Up here we have hockey.

Well MORON, if it was more popular, then it would earn revenue like the other sports that you mentioned and could pay athletes big money.

So what if some kiddies play it? All that makes it is a kiddie sport.
