Off Season Wrestler??

Alabama is a D1 school right? What weight do you wrestle?

Yeah its a division 1 school. Wrestling isnt that big down here. Football is king here after all. I wrestled 184 this year.

wressler125,
Do you still compete? And if so, at what level?
I do the occasional full contact fight (nothing planned anytime soon) but no more wrestling other than open tournaments, etc. Not much for a college team around here…
As for level, I was a match away from all-american in greco, and didn’t even come close to placing in freestyle.
Mind you, I sucked until my senior year, when I took everything I had learned, told my coach to let me be, and trained the way I knew I needed to train.
You seem like you are already a step ahead of where I was.

Focus on your strength, maintain bf through diet. Complexes once or twice a week wouldn’t hurt. Doing complexes twice a week got me in better shape for wrestling than anything I did in the past, in less time.
Crossfit might be a good option, but I would use it closer to the in-season, as it won’t be the best idea for building limit strength.
WS4SB might be an option. I followed a modified westside split in season, and this allowed me to keep my strength while cutting, without taking anything away from my training.

I remember that Xen Nova posted a modified Westside program he called “darkside”. It included Olympic lifts and ME pulling exercises into the standard template. He also incorporated a conditioning week every 5th week I believe. I think I’m going to give this a try and see how it works for me.

As it gets closer to next season/ if I start to get fatter I might incorporate some Crossfit/Meltdown style workouts into my regular training. For now I’ll just stick to HIIT and barbell complexes a few times a week to help burn fat. Hopefully sticking to Berardi’s diet recomendations will help me lean out as well.

are you worried about leaning out for looks or performance?

I want to lean out for two reasons. The first is that both me and my coaches feel that I will be a much more mobile wrestler if I weigh in at a solid 225lbs-235lbs as opposed to a soft 245lbs. In a sport such as wrestling speed kills, ecspecially in the Upper weight classes.
I am also planning on applying to the Naval academy/ROTC program, and in order for that to happen I have to meet their body composition requirements.

I also wouldn’t mind looking better nekid.

In NCAA wrestling there is no 215lb weight class, only 197 and 285. I’m 5’11" and about 245 lbs right now. I got certified for 215lbs at 5% bodyfat, so dropping to 197 isn’t a realistic option for me. I do wrestle greco and freestyle in the offseason, so that isn’t a problem. I’ve got both the Iowa and Minnesota programs saved on my hard drive, but I don’t like either of them because Iowa is a HIT style program and Minesota’s program is based upon a bodypart split.

I was thinking of doing a program like Charles Staley’s 21 Day itch program or something similar to what Heavythrower has posted on his Crossfit thread. I was also considering WS4B. I was just hoping to find something that can help me continue to lose the fat as well as get me strong.
maybe you know this , in OLYMPIC , is not the heavest wt class now 168 ?
