Not really. He is clearly more filled out which seems to b what you are focusing in on. In my opinion, most of these shows would more impressive (since the competitors wouldn’t feel like they were DEAD) if the guys were NOT as ripped as what we are used to now on stage. Instead of the insane near death sub 4% body fat, going back to when 7-8% was ok with no “ripped glutes” would allow guys like Dex to stand out more.
You have to realize that even though he is still ripped in the off season, he probably still drops in excess of 20lbs to get contest ready.
A big reason why I love lifting weights as opposed to loving the idea of competing in bodybuilding is because having “striated glutes” sounds like absolutely no fun to me at all. lol

Do you believe he put on 15 pounds of muscle in 7 months (his conditioning is just about always the same). I think most of the stats bodybuilders give out are lies to appear bigger than what they really are.
it was only what i read but your quite right some exagerate

…especially the shorter guys because they know what they are up against. I have heard some other pros state that Dex may not have even broken 220lbs for most of his appearances.

Lee Priest may be the only pro who doesn’t lie much from what I can tell…and he is proving that is not always a good thing. His openness has cost him his place in bodybuilding to a large degree.
Also, in line with this topic, Dex is one of those who RARELY goes much more than 20lbs above his contest weight…and he is also one of the ones who has made the LEAST overall progress over the last few years. That is why he is now trying to get heavier in the off season…now that it may be too late.
The ones ruling the stage lately seem to be the ones who are not afraid t put that weight on even if they may stay leaner later on.

I feel you on that one. I always thought it was counterproductive to be at your weakest and most susceptible to illness and injury when you’re supposed to be the epitome of health and strength. “Old school” bodybuilders didn’t get that ripped and I think the vast majority of people are still impressed by their physiques.

this is all tied in with the judges, same way they give the win to the mass monsters, if they changed the judges round a bit you might have guys like dexter, or even Melvin Anthony winning.

darrem charles another good example?
I think Darrem Charles is great…but he has looked pretty much the same since I was in high school and he was first hitting the scene.
Staying super lean or near contest weight at all times will make you look pretty, but it does NOT seem to be the way to make the most progress over time.

Actually, come to think about it, I don’t know anyone at all who thinks that the 4-6bf% looks good on stage. I mean we all know that the public in general thinks it’s ‘just disgusting’ but even around here I can’t remember seeing anyone praising that look. There has been praise for the amount of work and dedication it took to get to that level sure but the look itself is alienating bodybuidling even further from the masses IMO.

I agree about Dex’s progress - I call him Mr. Consistent, he is always spot on with his conditioning and looks the same at every show. He is ready to swoop in if someone else’s conditioning is off but otherwise unless he makes some changes I just don’t seem him doing better much better than 3-5th place at any of the big shows with the crop of guys competing lately (of course assuming that the other top guys conditioning isn’t off).
I also agree that him being so private costs him coverage which I think is a shame.
