If you all would like to continue your conversation about powerlifters shooting up before a meet, please make your own thread.
This thread is about bulking.
Thanks!
That is honestly as lean as I feel the need to ever be for my own personal satisfaction. I have never been one of these guys who is more focused on how ripped they are in spite of being fairly average as far as muscle development. I would rather be relatively lean but fucking huge even if my abs aren’t fully visible.

his abs are visible, they just arent shredded. personally a little more lean is what id like, but having loads of muscle is much more impressive than being super ripped. i actually prefer the offseason look to the dieted down one.
besides maintaing size and still having alright abs and vascularity isnt that difficult to do year round either. just requires a little more attention to diet but its totally feasible.

Stop Shugarting this excellent thread with talk of silly little girls and epi-pens.
Are there really people on here who want to look like the model on V-Diet central when seeing the pic of Kevin up there???
Who above the age of 16 lifts weight for the girls sake anyway? [/quote]
had that conversation with someone i was training yesterday. told him “dont ever do this for chicks, thats retarded cause regardless of what you do, whatever outlet it may be as long as you do it for yourself there will be girls, dont put that shit on a pedestal”

Should the day come where I want to train like a Powerlifter and wear all the elaborate suits and triple ply bench shirts that you need 4 people to get you into and then have them wet it down to shrink wrap it to your body so you turn yourself into a human power spring and then on top of this be shot full of Adrenalin-which can stop your heart instantly and is something I would never dare do to myself-- to lift even more weight than your muscles would normally be able to lift under normal training circumstances then I will do so.
Understand, this is no knock against Powerlifters, but I think it is important that people understand what really goes on. I train to build muscle and the weights I use, I use daily … day in and day out. Many Powerlifters wind up setting records by lifting a given weight that they cannot come anywhere near lifting (given the circumstances I mentioned above) a week later in the gym or ever again for that matter. At the moment, I don’t have the patience to read the 3 pages of arguing that have gone up since I checked this thread this morning, so forgive me if this has been covered.
PLers do wet their gear sometimes. This is actually to stretch it and make it easier to work with NOT to shrink wrap it on. One of my training partners would spray down her denim bench shirt if she had trouble touching in it. We’ve also sprayed down squat suits to get them off more easily. Supposedly, washing and drying them tightens things back up, but I never notice much of a difference.
Getting into the gear rarely takes 4 people. Most people I know can get into their stuff–even the gangsta comp gear–in minutes, with the help of one other person. Its getting out of the stuff that can be very difficult.
On the subject of PLers setting records with #s they could never touch again in the gym a week later or ever again…I don’t really know what you’re talking about. Do you mean they couldn’t do their equipped numbers raw? It would be silly to expect them to be able to, but I hope you aren’t saying that the biggest strongest PLers are nothing without their gear.
You certainly can’t be suggesting that their WR numbers were a one time deal, and if that is what you’re suggesting, I’m curious about where you got that idea from. Some of the best lifters have set records, only to break their own in later meets. Heck, just a few weeks ago I watched one of our guys pull something like 940 off of the pins in briefs that he gets into himself and a few weeks before that, he pulled 900 in competition.
On the topic of the epi-pen/adrenalin stuff, maybe there are people out there who do it. I don’t know. There are some crazy fuckers out there that will try anything twice and I wouldn’t put it past them. BUT to claim that this is a common occurrence seems to be quite an exaggeration.
The lifters that I have discussed drug use with have been open about everything else. I think the epi-pen thing would have come up before if it were really that common. The most exciting thing anyone I know has done was a B12 injection before a max squat workout. He said he didn’t feel anything different.
I’ve heard of guys having injectables on hand at meets. What, exactly, I don’t know, but I’ve never heard that epinephrine was one of the things on hand.
And on the topic of the Smith quote…Judging from some of the incorrect comments he made, I wouldn’t look to him as a source of info about what PL is like.
I hate how trey brewer posts with front double and back double bi shots. Puts his arms up way to high and doesn’t flare his lats, also tilts his arms forward every time. It really bugs me lol
Smith had been asked why, given his enormous proportions and prodigious raw strength (400+ lbs at 6’0 or so, incline Smith presses with over 700 pounds, 1000+ lb single leg presses, Smith squats with 9 plates, side laterals with 150 lb dumbbells etc etc) he didn’t compete in powerlifting.
He responded in his usual sarcastic fashion. I believe he was giving an example of why HE felt a powerlifting style of training was not suited to him, and not an indictment of the sport itself.
As to his claims about adrenaline: who knows? On the one hand, having read virtually everything the man ever wrote I can say he was not beyond a little exaggeration in his writing. On the other, he was a steroid guru and wrote reams on cycling, dosage, exotic drugs, site injections.
In any case, the only reason it came up is because he was a big mofo and this is a thread devoted to them. Enough about that.
Also, before someone starts bitching about the side lateral comment here’s a screencap from his training vid.
I can only assume he cheated his ass off. At least I assume that, because a 150 lb side lateral with any kind of decent form would pretty much ruin my self esteem for all time

He made a DVD of his training, with the weights etc. and techniques. Sadly he died before it could get released, his wife owns the rights to it and won’t release it to the public.
