Hey Prof X

You mentioned you were/are in the military. May I inquire as to what branch and what your MOS is?

I am AirForce. I separated as a Captain half a year ago. WTF is “MOS”?

Military Occupational Specialty. Maybe it is just a Marine Corps thing.

I was a doctor and I don’t think USAF uses that term at all. At least I haven’t heard it, but then, I was an officer. I knew my “specialty” before I joined.
Officers in the Marines get an MOS too. Although I wouldn’t consider myself “special” either. I was just a dumb grunt.

I for one am not sorry for shit that I didn’t have anything to do. Must have sucked to be a slave. Glad I wasn’t one.

Why would the physical appearance of Jesus be of any importance?

It only matters to racists like the good Reverend Wright that want to blame other ethnic groups for killing Jesus.

My question to you is, would it matter more to you if every image was of a black man and you felt less of a relation? Would your sentiments change if your personal or familial linage involved some extreme level of persecution.

It wouldn’t matter to me. I like black Jesus I think it is cool. I know Jesus doesn’t look like the pictures. I don’t care if a black church has a picture of a black Jesus.

I care because Wright is trying to make it a black vs white issue when it is not. Jesus and the Romans were approximately the same shade. Both a bit darker than I am and a bit lighter than you.

Knowing you, like I would like to think I do at least a little, i wouldn’t expect it to be much of an issue. However, I have no doubt that it would be an issue to millions if the situation was in reverse.
No doubt. I have no problem with people visualizing Jesus to look as they do. I think the pale, skinny long haired Jesus with northern European features portrayed in my church is amusing but obviously false. I have no problems with any pastor equating Jesus to his congregation but what I really don’t like is his using it as an excuse to blame a different ethnic group for troubles.

As you have posted racism is quite real and dealing with it is tough, there are no easy answers, but Wright is not trying to break down barriers, he is building them up.

I was watching some of this on the various news shows last night and my six year old daughter started quizzing me about “people with black skin”. She told me that she is glad we have white skin and the boy that sits next to her in class has black skin and he is really nice and told her she is pretty. We talked and she seems to understand that we are all people and skin color doesn’t change that and it is OK to have friends that look different but she is so impressionable.

I tried to imagine a six year old black kid sitting in that church hearing that the white man killed black Jesus and how badly that will screw up his perceptions of white people.

How do you know that? Chances of Jesus being white are quite slim.

God (and Allah too) you are an idiot.

That six year old black kid (if he grew up in the 70’s or even early 80’s) heard worse from mom and dad on a regular basis as overt racism wasn’t exactly hidden and his parents were hit with it frequently. My parents never taught me any “hatred” for another group. However, the lesson was that I would be degraded and hated based on my skin color in this country. Therefore, I should be better than everyone else in order to succeed…because I would have to be better in order to be seen as “equal”.

They were right…and the fact that they were shows how screwed up this country has been and in many cases still is.

The common misperception that Jesus was a white dude is a direct consequence of the cultural domination (but not limited to that) of a particular race. Challenging that widespread image is inherently a racial issue.

And other ethnic groups were certainly to blame for “killing” Jesus. Pontius Pilate definitely represented the poster-boy of the white occupier.

And Pookie, it was Zap who brought up the physical appearance of Jesus in an effort to demonstrate that Wright is spewing crap. What Jesus looked like is pure conjecture.

C’mon now! You were quite reasonable (dare I say insightful?) lately. Don’t get sucked back into childish-mode; I beg you.

Look towards Orthodox Byzatine icons for what is probably a more accurate depiction.

I am sure some of my daughters white schoolmates hear nasty shit from their redneck parents.

Racism is real, I see it with my own eyes, there is no question it is harder to be black in the US than white. Some of the problems are self inflicted, others are not.

I do hold those in authority to a high standard but I do not accept racism from any of those around me. I think a pastor should not be building walls between the races, he should be knocking them down. I grew up a Catholic and I have many issues with the way some of the priests have discussed women in sermons. There is a definite second class citizen mentality with some of them.

I was just working on being PC. The Harvard muslim thread opened up my eyes to the plight of your people, and I am going to start making an effort to accommodate muslims and their way of life. I’m even wearing a burka.

Oh, I’ve heard some nasty stuff from whites. Then again, I’ve heard nasty stuff from blacks. In fact, I’ve seen blacks do some nasty stuff (as in beatdowns) to Mexicans and whites, simply for not being black. The racist Wright is no unifier. He’s just a racist hate mongerer who preaches anger.

Wright is the one that claimed Jesus was black and his persecutors were white. That is what started the topic.
Zap Branigan wrote:

Again, how do you know any of that? And no, “God you are an idiot” is not an answer.

I don’t know what he meant by “black”, but few people would argue that Jesus was a white fellow. What is certain, is that his persecutors were white. Don’t pretend to hold the One Truth on a subject that will probably never be solved. The best we can do is speculate and go with the most likely conclusion, which is that Jesus was not white while the people who killed him were.

If this hurt your PC sensibilities, tough tomato! It’s the way it is, and while it doesn’t help racial unity, it is far from the racist comment you’re trying to make it. If you really want to do something to bridge the racial gap, stop being such a fervent supporter of the “war on drugs”.

Well, let’s not forget that Jesus was the same ethnicity as those who delivered him unto the Romans in the first place. The whole argument is a moot point.

To get back on topic. Did anyone see Obama’s speech this morning? He did a good job answering people’s objections without throwing his pastor under the bus. Very, very smart guy.

Because of a shared ethnicity.

Jesus could probably pass for a white more easily than a black man although spending his day in the sun he proabably had a pretty good tan, as would the Romans. They were both much darker than I.

PC sensibilities? Pushing racial strife based on false information has nothing to do with PC.

Lixy, you are a hater and a piece of shit. Your whole shtick here is to spread hate and strife. Piss off.

Did he pretend he never knew about Wright’s blatant racism?

No. You can watch it yourself when you have time.
