Obama's Pastor

Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community … Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy.

What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love.

A little belated CYA.

How is it belated? Most of you aren’t even posting direct quotes from the man but blogs and what other say about what he said.

Just so you know, it is like you all are trying too hard. Either debate exactly what he has said or quit giving this shit so much credit.

He’s pushed Cone on the Hannity show. I quoted Cone. This is the racist black theological expert he chose to name. Not my fault.

See if you can find direct transcripts of his entire sermons. I’ve been looking. I’m sure you can buy them from the church, but I’m not going to do so.

Given the clips of what he said, the burden of proof would seem to be on those who wish to give his excerpts a different meaning by adding the context that will supposedly change the seeming meaning.

I can find clips though:

Invented HIV to kill the black man!

Here’s that clip of Wright with Hannity & Colmes:

Mickey Kaus has some interesting observations on this (and about a lot of stuff, really, including McCain):

While I don’t agree with that, considering initiatives like The Tuskegee Experiment are why blacks don’t trust the government, especially older blacks, are you saying you fault that distrust?

Are you aware of how blacks were used as medical experiments in this country?

Yet some of you think that racism is the same as everyone else’s.

My point on his judgment is that he initiated the distancing quite late in the game - essentially right before he announcement of his candidacy. No one’s questioning his intellect - which makes me think he was engaging in wishful thinking, but was convinced otherwise by some political pros later, once they got a handle on Wright’s views.
Well, to paraphrase Rumsfeld, you don’t run for president with the past you wish you had, you run with the one you’ve got.

Seeing how Obama deals with this issue - as much as I think it’s a mountain made from a molehill - will be a good indication of his skills at dealing with adversity.

I’m sure it’s not going to get any prettier once the Democratic nominee is selected.

Edwards pretty much left me feeling indifferent, no matter what he was saying. I find Obama a much more engaging speaker.

AIDS wasn’t invented to kill of the black man, crack was.

Yep, I’m aware. But now we’re talking about HIV, which has been heavily researched the world over at this point. But, I guess the racist had to find something a bit more up to date to peddle to his racist followers. Put them on an island with the Aryan brotherhood. They deserve each other.

With this country’s past history with blacks, I am amazed some of you don’t get why people are still pissed off just like that preacher. Instead, you fault those people for being pissed, when the truth is, if whites had been treated like cattle and experimented on in that way, I am more than sure some of you would still be holding a grudge.

Not one of you would deny that if a little white girl goes missing that she will get more coverage than if her last name were Jackson or Remirez, yet you all will still yell out how equal we all are and how everyone who can’t see that is crazy.

Damn, church never was that entertaining when I went.

I still note that I see none of that craziness when Obama speaks. If he’d been as badly influenced as some people think he has, wouldn’t some of it come out at some point?

I know his speeches are written in advance, but when he gives interviews or takes questions from an audience, he is at some point speaking on his own, right? Why isn’t even a hint of Wright’s ranting coming through.

How bout, If you weren’t a slave, then quit bitching; and if your didn’t own slaves, quit feeling sorry.

We would all be better off.

Because he’s a damned good Politician.

 1. He attended a racist church in order to seem “More black,” while not actually believing any of it.

 2. He’s so stupid he didn’t understand what kind of rhetoric his mentor has used.

 3. Or, he takes this stuff to heart, while making sure he remained free of echoing it. A politician.

Wright might have all the reasons in the world to be pissed. The problem is that his delivery is highly inflammatory. Comparing America to Al Qaeda, or insinuating that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the moral equivalent of 9/11 - only worse - is going to put off a lot of people who might question whether they want to vote for a man who associated himself with Wright voluntarily for so many years.

I still think that this whole thing is much ado about nothing, but if Fox airing those Wright clips scares enough people in voting for Clinton in the primary or McCain in the general election, that might be all that’s needed for the Republicans to squeeze in for a third term in a row.

I could see how (1) might be possible. It is doable to see some of Wright’s points without necessarily accepting his proposed solutions (of which there doesn’t seem to be many.)

No one thinks Obama is stupid, so (2) is out.

And (3) I’d rate highly improbable. It’s very hard to hide your true colors when you really take something to heart.
