Oatmeal???

Hey People…

I eat oatmeal all the time. Just like most of you. My question is, is Instant Oatmeal OK?

LJ

I’m pretty sure instant oatmeal is processed a little, which makes it not quite as good as just plain old whole oats.

Absolutely not, unless you happen to find some that is sweetened with artificial sweetener (which, as far as I know, isn’t available yet). They put immense amounts of sugar into oatmeal, and you’re better off putting in sugar or sweeteners yourself. Also, it’s cheaper to simply buy a big bag of oatmeal than 20 small packages.

LJ:

It depends on your goals…

If the goal is to just “get in some carbs”, then either slow-cooking or instant is okay (as well as grits…)

If, in addition, overall health is a concern…then Slow-Cooking Stone Cut Oatmeal (like “McCann’s”) is the only true option because it contains GLA, a precursor to beneficial eicosinoids.

(Instant Oatmeal does not).

Yeah, I’m just using plain instant oats with no flavoring or anything. Like no apple and spice BS. It’s just easier, but I’ve been noticing a lot of posts here lately about rolled oats.

How long does it take to make “rolled oats”?

Thanks…

Regular old fashioned oatmeal cooks in under 3 minutes in the microwave, so I don’t see much of a convienence factor for using instant oatmeal.

LJ - Rolled oats are simply the oat kernels that have been put through rollers and flattened.

You can eat them without cooking them. No blowing up in the microwave and no waiting for them to cool down.

So how much of a difference in Glycemic Index in Instant(no sugar added) oats vs. Old fashion oats?

As far as bread or oatmeal goes, stone ground wheat, or 100% rolled oats is the only way, whoever gave the idea to just pour milk over a cup of rolled oats and wait a few minutes to eat is the man, I was gettig so tired of eating hot oatmeal…thanks,
