Oatmeal: BBing Staple or Not?

as long as we are into personal anecdotes: oatmeal gives me the shits. i’ve been told i have to eat it for a week or so to adjust… if i do that then i have the shits for a week or so.

haha, if ur like me dont eat it. otherwise whats not to like when reading the nutrition facts?

Eat your oatmeal. A lot of the coaches on here are very smart and very jacked, but a little bit crazy.

Thibs is a fucking beast and his training advice is some of the best out there, but honestly no one needs to live on 200g servings of meat, heaps of pills, cucumbers “at will” and the occasional orange.

Oatmeal is just awesome, and it’s a good source of fiber.

I wouldn’t say it’s an argument…it’s more of a discussion of the experiences people have on it. Because all of us on this site, or most of us, diet to the extreme, train to the extreme, etc. were going to discuss things to an extreme. I find it interesting to hear how people react to it, for example bloat, energy, etc. It’s interesting.

Also, I like reading the recipes! But anyway, obviously oatmeal is better for you that 99% of what people eat, I’m just trying to gather everyone’s thoughts on the matter. And thus far, it’s been a very informative and entertaining discussion.

X2 Drat! This is the Supplements and Nutrition forum. Forums were created to start discussion on what the F ever one desires! Oatmeal might not be as obviously a power food to some as it is to others. Especially when there are pre-packed dogshit oatmeal brands out there that load up the sugar but still claim healthiness. The average Joe Shmo looking to lose weight will see that in the grocery store and say “This stuff tastes great and I’ll be dropping LB’s in no time!”

I think you’re giving a lot of T-Nation readers the benefit of the doubt when you say “all of us on this site, or most of us, diet to the extreme, train to the extreme, etc”.

Off topic and search turned up nothing, but what do you guys think of rye bread?

Think it’s junk, but I don’t eat a lot of grains (besides occasional oats). never like bread that much for some reason. It just doesn’t sit well with me. I think I have a very very mild wheat insensitivity though. GI of Rye? google it ==> LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You

GI Rye Bread = 58(rating = medium)

Oatmeal scores a GI of 49
Actually, after looking at Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load

It seems that rye bread has a low glycemic index, but more importantly, a low glycemic load.

Definitely a staple for me as they are pretty convenient and I’ve never experienced noticeable problems with eating oats before. I have oats for breakfast almost every day. Blend a scoop of protein powder with a banana and some milk, mix with the oats, wait a few minutes until they soak, add some frozen berries and cinnamon. Taste great that way, no need for cooking.

As for being full after eating oats, not so much. Maybe it’s the sweet taste of the above “recipe”, but I’m definitely ready for my second breakfast (some hard boiled eggs, nuts, piece of fruit most of the time) as soon as I arrive at work.

thanks phatkins!! I agree, it’s tough for a lot of misinformed individuals out there looking to eat clean. My friends are always like, “well you eat oatmeal, this is the same thing” and they are eating that sugar induced crap. But whatever, there’s only so much I can do…on a different note, I’ve been eating “OatBran” lately, which I get from Stop and Shop, it’s Hodgson Mill and cheap. And in regards to PB Andy and the glycemic load, per serving it’s only 8, which is extremely low.

But even oatmeal, talking real, steel cut oatmeal, it is nutritionally way more powerful than rye bread. There is just no comparison.

Man, I could live on oatmeal. Bulking, Dieting, whenever. You’re always going to have people developing allergies to everything, but if you can handle a food, and it works in terms of macros, satiety, and convenience, then go to town boy-o.

I always thought about eating nothing but oatmeal with Natty PB and Metabolic Drive mixed in. I figured it would be the perfect ‘meal’ for a BBer in terms of numbers, and the fact that I feel full if I eat enough of it. It’s actually been the corner stone of my current contest prep, Oatmeal + Chicken breasts, yummy -lol. Seriously though, on my high carb intake days I’m having like 5 bowls of the stuff, and I’m full, carbed up, and looking pretty tight.

Good to know you can be full, full of energy, and look good after eating the low GI carbs from oatmeal. I bet you could look even tighter with some salt sprinkled in

I just had another idea so I’m going over to carb cycling forum…

Oats can be allergenic to individuals who suffer from gluten allergies or intolerances such as people with celiac disease…so if you are sensitive to wheat products, then oats may also cause issues.

Other than that…I think they are spectacular!

I love 'em. I eat them mixed with a protein shake or heated with some Natty PB, scoop of protein, and a small handful of pecans or almonds. It’s the only thing that is high carb that doesn’t make me feel tired an hour after eating it.

That’s my two cents.

Anyone else add cinnamon and nutmeg? Tastes like apple pie  maybe some yellow raisins (the purple are too dry for my taste)
there are yellow raisins?!

Oatmeal is THE most important food I have added since “watching what I ate”. It keeps me full for a bit and gives me sustained energy for a good time there after. Also, I think it taste great, especially if you mix in some Met. Drive. I HONESTLY go to sleep early some nights, just to wake up and have my morning oatmeal.
I thought I was the only one!!!

is the quick quaker oats any different nutritionally than the slow-cook stuff?

I’m talking about the big tin that’s right next to the big tin of slow-cook, not the little bags with a huge ball of sugar in them.

http://www.quakeroats.com/products/oatmeal/quick-oats.aspx

not any different nutritionally I believe.(has 1 gram less protein then old fashioned cooked, which isn’t shit) Just they might have a higher glycemic index and get digested by your body faster if I remember correctly.

Since I’ve been dieting, I’ve found that by adding a little extra water, a cooking just a little longer, it really fluffs the hell up, which is the opposite of why I used to like oatmeal,… a little undercooked and chewy

Steel cut oats are the way to go… I have them every morning with about six eggs. They’re way better than rolled oats - they have more texture and a better flavor plus they’re really simple to make. I mean they almost cook themselves! The downside is that they take longer to cook but if you make a big batch for the week its a piece of cake.

Oatmeal is the cheapest good-for-you carb on the planet in my opinion. I eat it every day. I grind up 1/2 cup of rolled oats and 2 tablespoons of wheat germ in a coffee grinder then add that to my morning protein shake. Tastes awesome! AND keeps me full all morning. I eat this at 6:30 am and I don’t need to eat anything else until about 9:30am.

I feel cleaner and healthier all around since I began this protocol about 6 months ago. Haven’t had a good reason to stop so I’ve been eating the same thing for breakfast for 6 months strait. lost another 20 lbs of fat and gained another 3/4" on biceps!

If you soak steel cut oats over night, when your ready to cook them in the morning or whenever, they’re done in like 5 mins or less, no joke. I read this tip online. It works great.

5A.M. 6 days a week: Quaker Old Fash oats, 1/2 scoop casein (construction worker so the farts are acceptable), 1/2 scoop whey, 1 fish oil cap, 2 packs splenda. Covers carbs/fats/protein. Nuke the mixture 3 min then off to work. If not a staple, try it out. Keeps you full, its healthy, and cheap as dirt.
