Mostly done. A few odds and ends to punch out. The RB25DET is running well. Dyno tuned to 292hp at the wheels. I know it doesn’t sound like much, but the car only weighs 2600lbs. I’m upgrading the rear axles and rear brakes next week in prep for a larger turbo and injectors in the near future.
Holy shit that’s a fucking sick car! I myself want a corvette (70s model…) forget the exact model… will probably take about five years before I have enough money saved up that I can just throw around to buy a new car
That is awesome looking! I like you choice in rims and color.
292 WHP is a lot. You are likely making 350 at the crank. Have you done any 0-60 pulls? 1/4 mile? I would bet 0-60 in the 5 second flat range?
Will be really crazy with a big turbo.
I think its a bit quicker than that. My friend has a brand new 5.0 stang and we ran them side by side. I’m didn’t shift well and we were still dead even to about 80 when we let off. I definitely want it to be faster than the new pony cars so hence the bigger turbo and injectors. My shop said that should be good for another 50-70whp.
Look into the Datsun 240, 260 and 280 Z cars. They have a similar look to a vette, but IMO are cooler. If you throw in a 90s era RB motor they are really crazy (especially if using RB 25 or 26, but the RB 26 is going to cost you).
@blshaw what type of work went into the swap? Did you have to do transmission too? I know the engine bay is large and set up for a straight 6.
Yeah it was a complete engine and trans swap from a Skyline GTST. Plus front mount intercooler, 3" stainless exhaust, dyno tune etc. I have an upgraded posi rear end R200 3.90.
The new 5.0 does about a 4.4-4.5 second 60 pull IIRC. I am a nerd about car stats.
Did you do any of the work? I do all my own car repairs, but this would end up never getting done if it is my project.
How much custom stuff has to be done? I am thinking that the age difference in the cars makes them not all that easy to swap?
Not much this time. I did the body work before sending it to paint but that’s it. I’ve built several cars in the past including a rotisserie restoration. I also did 72 firebird with an LS2 swap all on my own. Now I’ve got kids though… no time. I do have money at this stage in my life though so alas… to the shop it goes!
I’m off to the gym but I’ll recheck later. I love chatting car stuff so if Chris don’t mind, and since this thread is dead, why not continue LOL
One thing I would consider is taking driving lessons. It sure would be fun to learn how to get the most out of the car on a track. I think that experience also helps the driver know what is too much for the car in a safe environment (where you won’t destroy the car if you spin out). You already have what is likely a difficult (also fast) car to handle with all that power and light weight, and the turbo upgrade will add to it.
Dude that’s a sick car! I’ve never seen that one. It looks like a Corvette Stingray & a Camaro SS had a threesome with a Jaguar on spring break and this Alpha baby came out. Looks awesome!
Ah, one of my dream builds when I was in my early 20s! Never did have a garage that would allow it. At 23 I gave up hope and bought a C5 corvette. Now I’m an old man and drive a truck🤣
Gorgeous work man!
Datsun / Nissan used to make some sweet cars. Now all we got is the 370Z (the great grandchild of @blshaw car, and not as cool looking), and the GTR which I can’t afford.
The 350/370 just never did it for me. The GTR is a great looking car, but like you said, the cost. I can think of a few other cars I’d rather have at that price point.
The 350 can now be had for a price hardly above a beater car. A friend has one that he daily drives and paid about 5K for it.
I like the new c8 vette. I think they are sold out in the US. The older models can be had for cheap now (the late 90s ones and early 2000s with the LS1 I think C5?).
The old Z cars were really cool though. I also like 90s Japanese sports cars (but who doesn’t).
Yeah I had an 02 C5 Bette, the C6 was still too new for me to snag at that age. I used to love cars though.
Completely agree, old Zs and yes, early 90s Japanese cars were a blast. My buddy had a VR4 3kGT and it was a blast to drive.
These are sweet. I probably would be hesitant to buy a 30 year old Mitsubishi but very fast and cool looking IMO.
Oh no doubt, especially after how hard kids all beat on them in the early 2000s lol. I got into trucks and boats now, but definitely miss cars from that generation. Maybe one day I’ll build a 60s muscle car.
I want to build a 90s MR2. I think they look cool. Death traps though (would take driving lessons).
60s stuff is cool, but be prepared to spend some $$ on anything clean.
I’m a Jeep man. The only decision I ever regretted was selling my CJ-5 that I suped up and my Rubicon before I moved to NYC. When you pull up to the beach, lake or river in a ballin-ass Jeep your T levels immediately go supraphysiological (backed by science). Had to go on TRT after I sold it.
