Haha, so damn true. I have a RAM now, it’s lifted, so my nuts are tiny and I need to go on TRT so I can remove the lift. Backed by science too. ![]()
Thanks. I’m old now and won’t ever do what I used to be able to do, but I try.
I had (2) early 90s MR2s and one had a really built 3sgte. It was wicked fast. I’ll post some of my other builds tomorrow. I re-built and customized a golf cart last year out of boredom. My wife and kids really wanted one to take to the local park.
Is this legal to drive on the road?
I made it compliant with Low Speed Vehicle laws. I’ve yet to register it but nobody in my town cares. I live in a little waterfront town and next to a golf course. Tons of people drive them everywhere although the town doesnt currently have an ordinance allowing it without registration. Ironically the next town over does have such an ordinance.
Im going big this time, and plan on doing an LSX swap in the Roller. Sold my Bug-aru to finance the swap. Not everyones cup of tea, but its that or part it out. Id rather do something with it.
The grill is amazing! I want an Apache at some point in my life
There’s a 1984 300z for sale by owner near my office. That’s the same car I learned to drive manual on. My father bought one when I was 14 and about two months after I got my license some jackass rear-ended him. Insurance totaled the car and I’ve been looking for one ever since. That was like 20+ years ago. I’m now at the stage where I’m trying to convince my wife that it’s a better investment than all of my actual investments. (She’s not buying it yet)
Here was my first build and probably my best. It took me two years before having kids. Completely stripped a grandma looking 68 mustang drop top down to the unibody and did a ground up restomod. Cloned to an Eleanor. Did ALL of the work myself except the final spray. I did do all the body work, fiberglass molding to the body, primer, block sanding etc. Just not the final spray. But every nut, bolt, etc was replaced and I dropped in a new ford crate motor, T5 trans, painless harness etc.

A friend of mine has a 96 300ZX. It is cool. The rear wheel steering is a bit weird. Cool cars. Even his 96 is a lot of work to keep up though and it only has about 30K miles on it.
That’s a great looking car. You do good work. You must be good at keeping interest in projects. I lose interest after a little bit, so I fear if I start something like this I would never finish it. I have mechanical aptitude (I am a mechanical engineer), and have done all sorts of auto repair, but a full restoration I am not sure I would stick to.
Maybe I just need to start with a modest project.
I am too, by degree anyway. I just went off in a slightly different direction career wise.
Yeah you have to budget your time mostly. That’s why I did the Golf cart last year. I like to tinker but knew I didn’t have time for a car remodel. So you just need to budget your time like you do your money in the project. I know I’m short on time these days but once my kids are a little older I’ll start some full blown builds again.
Hopefully your kids will be interested. No guarantees on that though. I helped my uncle on a bunch of his Corvette projects, but my cousin was not interested at all.
I think the right project for me would be to start with something with a good body. I am much more competent with engine / mechanical work than body work (I have done it a few times and it looks awful objectively).
I would have to spend more on the car to start, but I would spend a bit less in fixing it up. Maybe a clean body MR2 turbo, and then do a bunch of performance mods to start.
I love the early 90s MR2. I was looking for one as a project when I bought the Datsun instead. My buddy and I have both owned/tuned them. Here is my buddies that had a 3rd Gen swap from TCS.
Nice looking car. TCS is that short for a cellica? That motor can take a lot for a 4 banger. I have seen some cool K20 and K24 swaps that have gone into MR2 non-turbo cars. A K24 with K20 heads and a few mods can make around 300 hp at the crank as an NA motor.
Sorry I mean TCS motorsports. The two biggest players in the MR2 world are TCS and Prime. They do all the major engine swaps and mods. Prime is the bigger of the two.
Ah, I see. I checked out the website. Looks pretty sweet. Are those fully built engines?
How do you afford all of these fancy cars? Do you drive them around, or are they more along the lines of “weekend project”
I own one small business and one medium sized business that do fairly well. I still actively manage the medium size business but many days its pretty limited which allows me to sit in front of the computer and forum browse all day.
I drive them to our office and back 1-2 times per week. But my office is only a couple miles from my house. That’s intentional of course as I don’t want a commute.
