No, games like Cod or CS don’t really teach you what you need to know to operate a rifle effectively (or at all).
Or even a pistol.
He managed to kill 80+ people, that is not someone who “learned” via computer games. He must have had practical experience… And a good bit of it, too. If you compare this to all the school shootings by guys who did actually practice shooting and such and ended up cornering dozens, maybe hundreds of people in cafeterias and classrooms and used pistols, shotguns (both from very close range), bombs… And often worked in a team… They rarely or never reached that kind of bodycount (even when left alone by the police for some time and with people stuck in the schools etc).
Plus… Even if you read books/manuals on it etc and have all the theoretical knowledge, without any practical training, things will likely go wrong.
Much like people who read a ton about proper bench setup and such will find that unless they actually practice it for a while, their body will simply not do what they have in mind.
That being said, the guy had the advantage over similar criminals if he really did pack an AR. Much more deadly than pistols and such, of course.
I’m really disturbed by this happening over here… (and in general)
the weapons used is yet to be confirmed, but he was registered as the owner of a handgun and an semi automatic rifle. Im pretty sure fully automatic rifles are illigal for civilians to own here, but several semi automatics are fairly easy to make fully automatic, with the right parts.
Owning a handgun in norway means you are atleast OK at using it. You have to be an active member of a gun club/competitive shooting club for quite som time just to be allowed to buy one. This means training from guys who really know what they are doing, and regular training/meets at a gun range.
my guess is, that like most of the norwegian male population, he has done his manditory year in the military, and hat some training there aswell.

well, who knows how long the shootings went on for on the island. that island was SMALL. even if he had shitty aim, it’s still like fish in a barrel.
Sure, but then again, a school cafeteria with 50-100 people huddled together plus classrooms with only one viable exit would be even easier…
Well, no matter. Horrible thing… What are the gun laws in Norway, anyway? I’d think that a lone “police officer” with an assault rifle in tow would kind of stand out to any adults on the island/on the way there?
I just wish I was there before he started shooting, with a sniper rifle, locked on to his head… I would have pulled the trigger. Don’t care if that shit gave me nightmares for life.

That explains a lot…
No full auto needed either…
One of the civilian AR versions… Something like an HK416 semi auto civ. version (the name escapes me) or a scar S or so.
I did not realize that you could acquire those legally in Norway as a civilian.

Now Edevus, don’t go there please. Very soon they’ll blame it on fps games!

Well, it seems he also played World of Warcraft. You know that some people will blame videogames before anything else. Scapegoat!
Thanks for the answers on weapons and COD. It really takes a special kind of person to open fire on children and other unarmed people.

Yeah, talked with my mom about it. Very small place and the guy told them to gather so he would explain about the bomb in Oslo. The guy was from the richest area of Oslo.
My aunt was in Oslo, but everything’s ok.

Edevus, glad everyone is ok. Horrible tragedy.
Thanks. They don’t live in Oslo, but well, it’s the capital, people go there all the time and my aunt happened to be there when it happened. At the airport actually.

I wish the rifle’d blown up in his face. I’m sure it would have been much improved with pieces of the receiver stuck in his eyes. But no such luck.
Reminds me of the rampage some eastern European kids went on with a hammer and such years back… That one was damn crazy too… They just walked from city to city (I think) unopposed and killed and tortured people with hammers, screwdrivers etc… Don’t remember the bodycount… But they taped some of it and the vids may still be up… Extremely disturbing and just makes you hate people like that.

Police officers are not allowed to have guns on them, unless they intend to/need to use them. When they do have guns, its seldom ARs. Glocks and HK MP5, or single shot ling range rifles…
Im not so sure on what you can buy here, but i know you can get single shot verions of the old army rifles, the AG-3, and the HK416, I allso know some guys talking about buying the AR15 single shot. Some “Gun collectors” have special permission to buy full autos though…
lates news from some survivers is that there were two shooters.

yes I remember that… almost clicked on one of the videos, too… but didn’t even go there.
I don’t know if this applies to the civ version of the 416 as well, but the main rifle is seriously flawed and will likely blow up in your face after some 10000 rounds or something like that because of some design issue unless the upper receiver gets replaced regularly I believe… Too damn bad it did not happen to him/them. Hmmm. We’ll see how this turns out.
I wish the goddamn news services would actually report confirmed things instead of just putting out BS info to cash in on all this and try to hit all the usual buttons ala games etc.
Goddamn I despise the news media for how they operate…

Sell first, inform later.
If they were totally wrong, just blame “the sources”.

My parents watched it all the way through (I could not… I’ve seen people die slowly and in pain in person, and I just don’t want to see any more of it)… They are both long-time medical professionals though. No surprise with my dad (watched his own surgeries whenever possible, no/only local anesthesia… Freak)… But my mom usually abhors any and all violence in movies and such, books, whatever. She’s seen it happen in real life of course, but I was surprised that she actually watched that one. She was curious more than anything. Man…
Edit: Of course none of us had ever actually seen a real person being tortured that way. That’s what got me the most…
This sort of stuff happening so close to home with no one opposing the culprits for hours… I wish I could have my wife wear full body armor at all times and give her a nice bullpup for protection… But then, making that sort of thing legal in Germany with all the brainless idiots committing violence in the streets of the bigger cities as it is (and with NO fucking reason. What, your soccer club lost? You don’t like someone’s skin color? Grand fucking reason to beat them to death, right?), would just turn areas of the country into a battlefield…

Really… And this has been going on for so long, too… And people just soak it up.
Anyway… I hope that the bodycount from this incident stops rising…

I often have to chuckle sadly to myself when I hear reports of idiots doing stupid shit for stupid reasons. Especially here in Germany. Just as when I listen to some of the music here, the so called “gangsta” rappers. A very sad time.
As for Oslo and the victims, it’s a real tragedy. Definitely removes folks out of their comfort zones. Violence doesn’t just happen in the Middle East and back west. Even in a relatively peaceful place like Norway. Fucking NORWAY!!!
The planning that must have gone into this… the guy even registered as a farmer just so he could buy fertilizer legally. That’s most likely how he made the bomb.
I don’t know how he got himself a full auto AR. In the old days reserve forces kept their AG3’s at home, but not any more.
