Hey guys,
My roommate just got MRI results back confirming that he has torn his labrum in BOTH of his shoulders. He’s getting surgery soon, and was told to abstain from lifting for at least 6 months. I’m trying to help him out with preserving muscle mass, and vaguely remember CT talking about how, while hospitalized, L-leucine helped him retain most of his muscle during the week long stay.
Anyone have suggestions? I told him to consider: eating more veggies, try bromelain, try fish oil, try cinnamon, try serrapeptase, BCAA’s (or is l-leucine better? I realize they won’t PREVENT ALL atrophy, but could they help a little?)…
Any thoughts?
He could do hip belt squats without moving his arms at all.
(With the help of someone else to load, unload, etc, obviously…)
His shoulders are messed up, not his legs. He can still do that stuff, with some modifications.
how is cinnamon going to help preserve muscle?
^^Yeah, keep him as active as possible and also load him up on l-leucine and creatine mono.
Thanks for the replies guys. I said cinnamon b/c I thought it was anti-inflammatory, but now that I think about it, I think it just helped with insulin sensitivity, right?
Reason being I thought he may want to ease up on the carbs, so whatever could help him manage them better would help.
I read in some articles that a long layoff from weights makes it very difficult to maintain the muscle mass one had gained to this point. The only positive is that once the person resumes weight bearing exercise, it is very easy to regain what was lost. Of course like previous posters posted, maybe he could do leg only lifting with assistance from people with the loading/unloading of weights.
As for Leucine - I thought that coach Thib was out for only 1 week and previous to this he was training very intensely, thus super-compensated? Of course no harm in taking leucine, BCAA, creatine, etc… just in case it helps - even in the long term of 6 month or more. I don’t know if this is true or not but untrained people taking small amounts of AAS can maintain, if not increase muscle mass without exercise. I read that in a study looking at Medline articles, but sorry I forgot where?

cinnamon is an insulin mimicker.
It won’t take him too long to gain back. In the summer I had to work construction, and didn’t have the energy to workout. I lost about 10 lbs of muscle, and around 20% on all lifts. I gained it all back within a month.
