No Promises This Time

Don’t go on vacation there. Live there at least half the year. Own lots of land and several houses there. Disagree with the shitty part. Love it there. Guess opinions differ.

It might have had to do with the fact that we trained til near puke and ate strictly MRE’s with barely any chill time for the duration of our stay.

It was beautiful at the beach, but I guess I just associate it with suffering.

Didn’t mean to offend, and didn’t mean “shitty” in the sense of being a terrible place, more that people are vacationing where we spent a couple months being constantly miserable. Also didn’t mean “you” as in actually you, haha. Sorry if I came off insulting - only meant that our training exercise was hell and it’s difficult to picture it as a relaxation area. I’m sure it’s awesome as a non-deployment spot.

Great Memorial Day experience. I just learned last week about the Flanders field poppies I always saw people wearing for Memorial Day back in the 1950s. Had a great aunt who was a nurse throughout France and she always distributed them.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Late 70’s til 91 when Mt Pinatubo erupted and that and politics forced the closure of Clark AB and Subic I did many yearly training exercises with the AFPSOCOM (PI Special Forces). Chased bad guys in Mindanao for a while. Went native and ate what the troops ate and sweated profusely. My wife’s brother retired as the Unang Tsip Master Sarhento, First Chief Master Sergeant.

I googled the poem to get the “story”, learned something today.

Random connection thought: was watching Devon Laratt (ex-Canadian SF, won the Canadian armed forces ironman thingie in his prime, true warrior type) in a huge arm wrestling match which cemented his status in the GOAT discussion; in response to a livestream chat question from an ex service buddy of his, Laratt’s wife showed off her (only) tattoo of a poppy; first time I’ve understood the poppy to be an armed forces symbol, now I know the origin.

Great workout. Increase the weight up to your bodyweight and I’m willing to bet you won’t go back to dips.

You’re right there.

Too much rain. Suppose to get a lot more over the next few days. Rivers running to high and fast to swim. Gym time for the next few days.
New Press machine - seat and at a slight angle - Has both the overhand and nuetral grip handles-overhand -100, 120, 150 x 10, nuetral -100, 110, 120 x 10.
rear delt machine - 50, 70, 80 x 12
Seat lateral delt machine - 50, 60, 70 x 12
preacher curl machine - 60, 70, 80 x 12
hammer curls 35 x 10 x 3
Straight bar reverse curls - 55 x 15, 75 x 12, 85 x 10
Just playing on the machines mainly. Didnt get much out of the overhead press machine when using the overhand grip but really liked the way the nuetral grip hit the delts. The other machines were kinda “eh” or this how you use “meh” now?. I like the way dumbbells hit the shoulders better.

Fun to work in with them. Some of them I’ve watched grow up and several are my great-nephews. Most the people in the gym, related or not, call me uncle anyway.
More rain, river running real high and fast so back to the gym today.

Today was the dryest day we have had in 2 months. It was warm but at least not oppressive.

Being approximately midway between hel320 and CL, I can say we have 93% humidity and no rain. Windows are fogging up earlier than usual.

Haven’t been doing legs much lately and haven’t deadlifted in a while. Kinda fell outta working them when I didn’t have any competition to train for. Other day watching TV in bed and the wife was massaging my legs (ok, I’m really spoiled) and says she can pinch skin on my legs. Never been able to do that before. Hence, the leg work out. Did deadlift just because. A little good music for you.https://youtu.be/jXerpxFZVJ4?list=PLgcn5X1B5BXuDE_2G1-LqU5enrf8uVOrL

I have heard legs are the first muscle group to waste away as we age. I am trying to put weekly squats into my workout routine but I’ve so far failed. Maybe your post will be a good motivation for me.

Great work going on in here. Sorry for my absence. 235 C&J is amazing. Also, I love how you “haven’t done deads in a while” and worked up to a couple of singles at 405. I do deads ever week and might work up to a weight close to that maybe once per year. Outstanding work.

I find the main problem with lifting as you advance in age is adjusting to your “new normal” and wrapping your head around what you’re still able, and more importantly, unable to do. It’s hard to get excited about re-achieving numbers you did when you were a beginner or when younger. When I go into the gym for a workout, oops sorry, a “training session” now I try to remind myself I’m suppose to be going for my health. The ego does kick in every now and then though.
