Given that the shipping costs to Canada for Surge are prohibitively high (I’m also a university student), I was looking for opinions on what would be a better nighttime protein source.
a pure casein protein (specifically, I have tried ON Casein) vs.
a mixed, sustained release formula (such as Syntha 6, or Isobolic…which is slightly less expensive…again, a consideration for me).
Surge isn’t really a night time protein in the first place; it’s peri-workout. Metabolic Drive is the equivalent night time one. I have the same issue but being in Australia, shipping is even worse. I just use whatever casein blends I can find.
Oh! I’m an idiot. I meant Metabolic Drive, yes. And both Syntha 6 and Isobolic are mixed blends that contain Casein (although how much is always the funny part). The blends are a bit less expensive than pure Casein, but the difference isn’t so much that I wouldn’t purchase pure casein if it was better. More expensive doesn’t necessarily equate to better, though, which I understand. Hence the question.
Also, during the day (not pre or PWO, where I take whey isolate), which would be generally better, when I’m not getting my protein sources from solid food?
On a personal note, I just got back from spending the summer in Australia (Sydney, mostly). God. If I thought it was expensive for protein here…it’s nearly double the price there. A 10 lb. bag of 100% ON Gold(the only thing I recognized, but I like ON anyway) was about $170.
Yeah, supplements in Australia are ridiculously expensive. If they are light, one can ship from here or BB.com or something, but as theres import laws on whey anyway, proteins a killer.
During meals I tend to use a micellar casein kind of protein as it just digests longer and I feel fuller. However if you have problems eating enough you may want to go the other way and slug down some isolate etc.
Work out cost benefit ratio too. Really, I don’t think it’ll matter too much between meals; in fact whey concentrate should be relatively fine I believe. Gets a bit of a bad rap if you ask me.
Metabolic Drive, Syntha 6 etc I’ve never used. But try and get one that has micellar casein as the primary ingredient (not calcium caseinate).
Check all this too, I’m relatively new to the site/nutrition/etc.

how is shipping cost that high? are you only getting a couple?
anyhow if you are dead set on getting the high end protein, i would go to true protein and make up a blend. they ship to canada cheap. it will cost what MD does, but taste is nowhere near, nor does it have the lecithin or GDL. if that is the route you chose, go with splenda for sweetner and the BSL flavours.
shipping from T-Nation is actually pretty cheap, if you order 10kg worth, and whey protein from america to aus is fine… and no laws stop it from comming in … all you need to worry about is HOT-ROX Extreme which has a banned ingredient here…
oh and to anwser your question Metabolic Drive is a awesome between meals\night time protein it digests really slow so go for it… and also a girl might help her juices can be quiet good ;p good luck.

UB: I checked out that site…it’s intimidating, to say the least! If the taste is nowhere near, nor does it have things that MD does, and the cost is the same, why would one possibly choose it? In advance, honest, non-smart-ass answers from people regarding why (not that I don’t enjoy smart-asses most of the time, as I often am one) would be appreciated.

Did you not like the ON casein? I beleive the main ingredient is micellar casein and then calcium caseinate, I liked it when I used it, although since then I haven’t tried a casein only powder. Also, are you just looking for a shake to slam down before bed, or any type of protein?
Yes, it was fine, I just had a 2lb. tub and then have just started into the Isobolic. It’s a question of which would be more effective. The 100% Casein, or the whey/casein blends?

it costs the same as getting the Metabolic Drive shipped free in the states (assuming you are shipping to canada) technically it is cheaper. if you buy more Metabolic Drive, the price difference would be small even with the extra shipping. i was just giving the nearest option in terms of protein quality. the other protein powders mentioned come nowhere near what you can get there or here, just the product here is super refined for picky people like me. some people like the idea of making their own protein blends. if you did not want to go to the hassle of going across the border or paying whatever the extra shipping is, then the option would be worth your while. taste and mixability of the other product is on par or better than most on the market, but Metabolic Drive is hands down the winner.
anyhow, Metabolic Drive is what you want, and you should get it. besides, there is no reason your question calls for any smart ass answers, had you questioned Metabolic Drive, that would be another ball game.
Now, I could be way off base here and I honestly can’t remember the site I read that talked about whey but BB.com won’t ship me ON 100% Whey, but it would send me 100% casein if I wanted. Honestly have no idea why, and perhaps because Metabolic Drive isn’t 100% whey it would let it through. Just not sure - if any aussies here have shipped whey in successfully I’d be interested to know what kind, from where, etc.
