Night Shift

Here’s a question. How does a person working a night shift make up for the chemical imbalances produced by such a lifestyle? I’m sure such a thing would have an effect on a persons progress in the gym.

See my reply to the melatonin post above. Also, I keep my hours when I’m off about the same as my work, ie…I stay up all night when I’m off because of my night shift. You can go to bed earlier when you feel tired, etc. When you do get to get up when the sun’s up, get as much sun as you can to get those benefits. Changing your off time hours compared to work, too much will destroy your body’s defenses.

Simple answer - you just have to get used to it… I know, probably not what you wanted to hear, but working at night is really unnatural and puts a lot of stress on your body, so you have to take that into account just as you would any other stressors in your life. When I worked 3rd shift I had to accomodate for that by working out before work. You’ll probably have to use less volume as I found I had to do. Simple things like making sure your room is dark when you sleep and maybe taking some minerals (ZMA) before you go to bed can help - basically just make sure you get some decent sleep. Other than that, your body just has to adjust chemically to the schedule you have it on.

I thought as much. Thanks for the meletonin suggestion. I read the post and found it very interesting. But I think part of the problem with sleeping during the day is that you also have more meletonin than you want while your awake, this being produced because you’re walking around in the dark. Would supplementation of cortisol help with this, or is there something that can suppress the production of meletonin while I’m awake and working?
