Mark your calenders now. On Sunday September 26 I will be competing against a bunch of Pro heavyweights at the highland games world championships in NH. The highland games will last all weekend, and we will be doing a strongman competition in Kilts on Sunday morning (9:00 - 12:00). The tentative events will be
1 305 per farmers walk
2 scion hercules hold
3 harley davidson conans wheel
4 keg throw for height
5 275 log pres for reps
6 atlas stones 260-380
There are supposed to be around 60,000 people coming through over the course of the weekend, and it is a redhook brewfest as well. So far the list of competitors will be
Walt Gogola
Chad Coy
Dan Ford
Jim Glassman
Derek Hurley
Russ Hubby
Will Leduc
and myself (the only little guy)
This should make for a fun weekend for anyone that is around, here is the website for directions.
Kyle,
If you end up going definitely introduce yourself. I will either be looking very tired and angry, or very happy and drunk. Either way I look forward to meeting you.
Zeb,
Thanks, I am just hoping to hold my own against these monsters. The big guy in this pic is Dan Ford there will be three other competitors about his size at the comp.
He is a big one for sure! However, my take on these strongman competitions (and I could be wrong, as I have never entered any personally) is that the biggest man is not usually the guy who comes out on top.
If you look at the past few WSM competitions you have several top competitors who while large and muscular are not as big as many of the others. The strong man from Poland for example (sorry can’t remember his name). Also, former WSM Jouko Ahola were never the largest guys in the competition.
I think these competitions are structured so that the strongest, but also best conditioned athlete will win. And if that is the case, you have a great chance to walk away as the champion!
Please let me know how you do. I wish you all the best,
I just wanted to say good luck at this weekend’s competition. I look forward to catching the competition and hopefully I can snap a few photos of you guys in action. I’ll post a few on the forum if I get any good ones.
Thanks man,
I had a little mishap at the chiro the other day, so I am hoping to get through everything without reinjuring my back. The farmers is now up to 330 per hand !!!
I was able to catch most of the competition earlier today and it was a blast to watch. I had to leave early to provide sportsedicine coverage for a baseball game but I was able to snap off a few pictures of you guys in action.
How did you finish off the day Brad?
I was impressed with everyone’s performance and it makes me want to incorporate some heavy implement training into my routine!
It ended up being an unbelievable competition for me. I ended up 2nd place in the farmers. Log I bombed out, had I gotten 1 rep I would have won the competition overall. In the hercules hold I placed right in the middle. Conans wheel I placed first, and stones I plced first. The crowd was awesome and I won $1000 not too shabby. The only guy that beat me overall was heavyweight pro Dan Ford, and it was very close considering I beat him in three events. All the other guys were awesome, heavyweight pros Walt Gogola, Jim Glassman, Grant Higga. I was pumped at the end of the day, too bad you left early you should have heard the crowd when I went a full rotation with the conans wheel, and loaded the last stone. Great weekend !
