Perfect timing for Flacco. He’s good but he’s no Brees, Manning, Brady or Rodgers.

This deal is going to bite Baltimore in the behind. They won’t be able to sign key free agents going forward and better hope they have amazing drafts and can get a lot out of their rookie contracts cause they won’t be able to afford to keep many guys after that.[/quote]

I agree, I like Flacco but that contract? C’mon.

It’s almost as bad as a franchise passing up Drew Brees for Daunte Culpepper. Oh wait…

Or a franchise getting rid of Brees, Sproles, Vincent Jackson and also picking Larry English instead of Clay Matthews lol

OMG they were free agents!! They didn’t get rid of them, other GM’s were smart enough to offer them more money. Maybe that’s why that specific GM is gone.

I doubt it will. Flacco will be a Hall of Famer when it’s all said and done.

Last year the guy was hated on in the national media and hated on 50/50 by local media. He turns down an offer by the Ravens, likely in 15M range because he feels he’s worth more. Ravens say prove it. So what’s he do? Sets 2 records (most road playoff wins in NFL history took 5 years all while still under his rookie contract and a playoff win in each of his first 5 seasons), ties a record (Montana’s 11-0 TD/INT record), wins a Superbowl and is named MVP, and beats 2 future Hall of Famers (Peyton & Brady). So the Ravens are paying the man.

What more does he need to do?

Also their free agent situation is fine. They are going to lose 1-2 players that’s all.

He earned it, so good on him. I didn’t like Flacco before this season, but that was a ballsy move and he made it pay off. I’m still not a fan, but I have some serious respect at this point.

The actual contract is going to be renegotiated every year after the 3rd anyways because the cap hit just about doubles in year 4. No way they can allocate ~$28 million in cap room to one guy.

^^this is what I am talking about.

They are going to be paying out a TON of money for one player. That is 100% going to hamper them in the future (not next year) when it comes to signing/resigning FA’s. when you’re scheduled to pay out 1/4 of your teams salary to one player it causes problems.

Unless Flacco re structures his deal like Steel Nation said… Then it will be different, but no one knows if he’ll restructure.

Anyway, Flacco and the Favens were EXTREMELY inconsistent for the first 1/2-3/4 of the season so of course he was scrutinized by the media. He had the 2 worst QBR (I think that’s the one) games of all time in the begining of this season. He without a doubt turned it around and aged amazing down the stretch but let’s not act like that’s the Flacco that shows up every day of the season.

But like I said, good for him. He played amazing and the perfect time and got paid.

If I was a Ravens fan I would be glad that we kept him around but would not be pumped about locking up so much money in 1 player.

The money is a gamble, but what else could they do?

You’re right, they are kind of hand cuffed in a way. They could have tried reasoning with him, offering him a slightly less insane contract based of keeping cap space open in the future so that they can stay competitive and keep winning… Then just hope that he’s a team player and not a greedy selfish prick… But we all know how athletes are and how that would have gone over lol

I still think it’ll work out. Flacco has a lot of upside. Sure he could bomb, it happens, but if he can play at 80% of what he did in the playoffs for a whole season, his stats will significantly improve. So will consistency and Ray Rice will benefit a ton. Not to mention another year with Smith only helps.

Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Ray Rice splits time with Bernard Pierce or even Pierce takes more of the load next year.

I don’t think they’ll split time, but I do expect to see more of Pierce. Dude’s a beast.

It doesn’t pay to be a “team player” when contract time rolls around. If you get injured and fail to perform, the team will dump your ass in a heartbeat and the fans will cheer and call you washed up. The players need to make hay while the sun is shining.

Flacco is not Tom Brady, who can offset the fact that he takes less money to keep his team competitive by being a fucking model in his spare time. Joe’s gotta make his money on the field. He is not a marketable guy.

I would do the same thing. If they didn’t want to pay him, someone else surely would. It’s just business.

Yup, couldn’t agree more.

I guess you don’t get the Flacco First Mariner Bank commerical up your way huh??? Or Flaccos favorite, Pizza Hut…(commericials are aweful by the way).

Just to clear things up. Brady did NOT take less money. His deal actually pays him more it just frees up some space this year and if he gets hurt he gets paid out the rest of his deal.

Basically a fully guaranteed contract.

Ya, Flacco is only getting like 6.8M this year. It’s year 3, 28M or so, that’s the problem.

I read Brady and Flacco will both make 14M and some change next year.

I know what you’re saying, I have a few “friends” (one friend, a few acquaintances through tha friend) that play/played in the NFL. I am much more on the players side after talking with them…

BUT what I’m talking about with Flacco is not taking a minimum contract or anything. I’m talking take $24 million a year instead of $27 and help the team keep quality players around you. He has a better team = more success. More success = more money when the time comes.

He definitely vastly put preformed his deal for this year, I won’t argue that. He deserves a long term deal and a lot of money but IMO they gave too much and it could bite them in the butt. That’s all I’m saying.

Ya man, I’m with you. Anytime you put that much into a single player, It’s a gamble. Knock on wood he hasn’t missed a game yet. Hopefully that continues.

Edit:

Not to harp on it, I just like the guys attitude. He’s not, at least in public, cocky at all and he cares about winning and that’s it. His post signing interview all he said he ever cared about was respect, it was never the money. That’s the kind of guy I want around.
