NewDamage How Do You Train?

ND! Great Thread! What do you do/did you do for lower back strength? You seem to use a lot of back pulling so I’d like know what type of lifting you did to prevent any injury.

Also, what do you do for ab work? I find that when doing front squats, my abs give way long before my legs.

Keep up the good work!
Thanks man!

As far as lower back strength, I’ve done nothing special to strengthen it, except tons and tons of deadlifts.

Basically I started deadlifting when 200lbs felt heavy…and I’ve slowly progressed (5-10lbs per week) until was doing something like 565 for sets of 5.

There was a stint in there where I pulled for singles using Hybrid Hypertrophy, but mostly I stuck to a 5x5 or 4x6 scheme, straight sets, and I did 10x3 for a while (which, using your 5 rep max, is brutal.)

I also watched a ton of videos and focused on maintaining good form since the beginning.

Over time, I guess it just bulletproofed my back, and now even when pulling a max, beltless, there’s not much rounding going on.

And sorry, but…I don’t do crap for ab work, orher than the work they get from heavy squats, front squats (when I am healthy enough to squat) and they get sore from weighted pull ups, as well.

But…I haven’t done any direct ab work in years. Not saying I couldn’t benefit from it, but I’ve yet to run into a situation that seemed to warrant it…yet.

After that, its on. I’m going to get my knee checked out and devise a way to train around it the best I can, but everything else will be trained DC.

That’s the same boat I’m in, except with an ankle instead of a knee. So if you get any ideas then please PM them over to me because currently all I can think of to do for myself is leg curls and extensions and I’d like to vary that a bit more, obviously.

Anyway, awesome deadlift and looking awesome in your avatar.
Thanks a lot. Yeah, I’ll have to do some research on this, feel free to share any ideas you discover with me as well!

Fair enough. Guess I’m just not as gifted in the ab strength department.

I will do, but from the sounds of it if you can’t even bend your knee you’re maybe in an even worse position than I am.

When you can’t train your legs properly and squat and dead it almost feels like you’re defeated before you’re started. I know that’s not the case because I’ve seen plenty of stacked disabled bodybuilders, it’s just a little disheartening.

Oh well, better to look like Foghorn Leghorn than Tweety Pie.

I’ve seen ND deadlift in person. Unlike a lot of guys on the internet he is the real freaking deal. Very impressive.

New Damage is one of my favorites here. His avatar has always been inspirational. Besides, anyone whose screen name is a Soundgarden song title is badass in my book.

Hmm everyone keeps saying nice guy…from reading SAMA that means girls won’t like me. I will try to balance things out with more inflammatory posts.

Thanks a lot, Steely, means a lot coming from a guy who’s made so much progress.

No you want to be bigger than NewDamage, and with two good knees and two good shoulders.

Thanks though dude haven’t seen you post in ages.

Thanks man I was honestly apprehensive about being called out cough jehova cough because I really didn’t feel I had much unique to offer so I’m glad people are getting something out of it besides boredom and sore eyes.

NewDamage’s back is extremely hot!!! I love it.

I’ve not posted in ages but I had to come out of the woodwork and add my comments when I saw this thread!

ND,

Were you always a conventional deadlifter? Or did you experiment with sumo a bit as well? What’s your best sumo pull if you do use it once and awhile?

Thx

Hey power_bulker,

I’ve always pulled conventional. I don’t really remember the reason why anymore as its been almost 8-9 years but I think its just the first method I learned.

I have actually NEVER pulled sumo - there have been times I have thought about doing it, but never gave it a go. Which is stupid because I need to bring up my legs (who doesn’t) and I believe sumo would give me some more leg development.

HOWEVER, with the most recent knee fiasco, pulling sumo has again been put on hold.

But, the good news is that I think the knee is starting to come along. Its beginning to act better, I’m having little to no occasional pain when moving around bending my legs, and I’m able to pop it again, which I could do about 6 months after the first time it was hurt, just before I started training quads again.

So right now I’ve been able to do some Bulgarian split squats and static lunges using the Hammer Strength Shrug Machine (pretty cool) and some very slow, higher rep limited ROM leg extensions without problem. I won’t push the envelope just yet but if I regain my previous abilities I will start playing around with sumo soon.

Any ‘secrets’ to keeping a large appetite under check?

Not at all.

In fact, when I’m really lean, my leptin levels must be absolutely gone because that is when its the worst.

So, at higher bodyfat percentages my appetite is not quite as ravenous.

But I’ve eaten 5lbs (literally) of meat and vegetables when I was lean and still remained somewhat hungry so the only things I can recommend are

1)Don’t go too long without eating
2)Eat lots of fiber and protein and get your fats in

But even doing that if you’re much leaner than your body’s “set point” or normal walking around leanness then I think you’ll struggle. I have yet to make a new “set point”, with regards to leanness , though I have done it with regards to muscle mass.
