Newb 5/3/1 Log

Officially weighed in at 217.2. Picked 250 and 405 to open.

What a great time! Glad you cajoled me into it, ink.

Bench first

Warmed up with 135x8, 2 sets. 185x3 with a deliberate pause, then 225x1 paused, then 255 paused.

I got a little concerned, because I was 2nd in the flight. 1st was a 123lbs girl…not a good sign, right?

The collars that the promoter brought were 1.5lbs each, so they added 3lbs onto whatever weight we chose. That’s the reason for oddball numbers.
253 went down, it felt like a longish pause, maybe “oneonethousand” and then blasted up, no problem, except one red because I ever so slightly jumped the gun on the rack command. Side judges gave me whites, so it was good. Head judge (USPA Chair Steve Denison) pulled me aside right after the lift and let me know what I did wrong, so that was cool. Lesson learned.

Felt good and had 278 next, which thankfully put me further back in the flight. I took a lift off for this one. Once I had the bar in control, I think I held it for a just a bit too long before starting. It came down, paused on the chest, and I think I lost some tension. Still blasted it up fairly easily, 3 whites.

303 was the next attempt, and by now the jitters had subsided quite a bit. I felt like a I had a good rhythm established by now. Got the lift, “bar is yours” held for a second, pull it down at a medium pace, held tight and Blasted it off the chest, it started to slow about 4" up, I actually growled “I got it” to make sure, and powered through. 3 White. Booya.

A few people watching told me afterward that I had good speed and they opined that I probably could have nailed 310-315. In any case, I’m very happy with that. 3 for 3. One guy who said he’d been doing it awhile (his son was competing) told me it looked better than the first 2.

By this point I’m feeling pretty darn good. We had a 20 minute break to get warmed up for deads. I need to buy some soccer socks. I had some dress socks that were long and were close. I ran them by the judges beforehand, and they said t hike them up as high as I could and they were good to go. Cool.

Went with a 405 (408) opener. Chalked up and flung it up. 3 whites. Easy-Peasy-lemon-squeazy.

I was unsure of what to do about the 2nd attempt, but after thinking about it for a couple seconds, decided on 445 (448). I was 99% sure I could hit that. That weight put me 2nd last in the flight, so that made feel alright. The last guy was pulling 725. Pretty beastly dude. Put up somewhere north of 500 on bench (raw). Anyway, back to me. Got up on the platform feeling like super-beast after some LOUD 5FDP in the headphones. BAM. That’s the easiest 445 has ever felt. 3 Whites.

When I went over to the table for the 3rd, I told the scorer (an accomplished lifter herself) 465. She said “are you sure? You had great speed on this last one” Well, then, make it 475! I told her.

I was last (mega-beast dude called it after #2). I actually put on some baby powder for this, being a 20lb PR attempt. I zoned out to a 5FDP/Hatebreed/Death before Dishonor playlist while the other lifters were doing their thing. Walked up the bar ready to kill someone. Set up and POW- 478 came up with speed that surprised the crap out of me. 3 Whites.

Total= 781. LWI.

We forgot to do pic or videos for bench, and only did pics for DL. Here’s the PR lift, just a slip second before lockout.

Trophy.

  1. Let’s try this without the img tags

478! I TOLD you you’d be able to get 480 dude, and you smashed it. Awesome write up, congrats on dominating the hell out of it! First meet, PR’s, no failed lifts…WINNING!

Awesome dude, just plain awesome.

Thanks man!

I’m super-happy with the results. 6 for 6 and a new PR is great feeling. The only thing I’d have done/will do differently is to be as aggressive on my bench calls as I was with DLs.

I can’t wait to do the next one, hopefully a full meet next time. I’m looking for 1125 (Class II) in the short term, and 1279 (Class I) by the end of the year. It’s ambitious, sure, but I think I can get it if I get my squat right.

I’m getting back to the gym this evening with some squats. Since the TJM experiment was interrupted, I’m not sure whether I’m going to continue it where I left off, of maybe go to a Westside style program, or maybe even back to 531.

Hell yeah man, do a full one next time. I think I might do a p/p next time, while I keep mastering my squat.

Ambitious is good, it keeps us fighting for more, and never fully satisfies the hunger.

LWI!

I didn’t have anything in the way of a plan. I plugged my current numbers into my 531 spreadsheet and used that as a starting point, but then just went all over the place.

Squat

box squats w/ 2 sec pause - really concentrated on form for these. If I started rocking, I ended the set.
135x6, 5

quads feel pretty well toasted. I need a better plan though.

Nice work man! Must be nice to hit all of your weights at a meet!

Thanks Trav, it did feel pretty good.

So yesterday was supposed to be Bench day, but I felt like a bag of smashed assholes, so I postponed 'til today.
Wasn’t much better. Felt like the chicken I ate for lunch was sitting like a cinderblock in my gut. Pretty craptastic workout.

I think I need to do more of these. The setup is similar to deadlift, and I noticed that I not exploding up like I should. The muscle memory for DLing is a bit slower, so it took a conscious effort to work on really exploding off the floor. Maybe retraining that muscle memory with cleans with help the off the floor strength on the DL. Seems like they’d be a nice compliment to band DLs.

Good mornings

Nice pullin man!

Not sure how I missed this one, but how’d you like the hook grip? Feels alien to me and I just say eff it.

I think cleans are a great tool for explosiveness, I definitly gotta include those

Thanks Trav!

Inky - The hook grip does feel weird. Not sure I like it, but it seemed like it be worth a go. I might add it in here and there for the sake of variety.

The last week has been a charlie foxtrot as far as lifting goes. I bought a new reloading press and I was trying to get it dialed in and ready for some USPSA matches this weekend (shooting stuff). Got dogpiled by the fulltime and parttime gigs, so I had only enough time to get the press up and running, or lift. The press is now fully dialed in, so it’s back to smashing heavy weights.

delts and upper pecs are feeling it today.now it’s time to inflict some pain on my legs in the squat rack!

“Charlie Foxtrot” haha, you freaking devildog…what was your MOS again?

I didn’t know you were a competition shooter? That’s kick ass man, although it makes me feel inferior knowing you could probably drive nails while I’m lucky to hit a playing card. What do you shoot? M16-A2 service rifle, I presume? Haha

I’m with you on the “more ab work” thing, it seems that it IS important to train them…

Primary MOS 0341 Mortarman, Billet MOS 8152 Marine Corps Security Force (MCSF) Guard. Same school as the FAST Co. guys, with tons of CQB type training, but I got a cushy garrison gig in Italy instead. I’d like to think I’m High Speed, Low drag, but I know it’s the reverse. lol

The shooting stuff is USPSA, which is “action pistol” Pure accuracy isn’t super important, it’s all runnin’ and gunnin’ I probably couldn’t drive nails either.

Here’s their semi-cheesy promo video. It’s ridiculously fun.

Oh right on, that looks fun as hell! What’s your gun of choice for that?

03xx = super moto! Right on, nice that you lucked out with an easy ass billet MOS in Italy! Airwinger here, but I got no hate towards the ground guys. Why is is that some ground guys HATED wingers? Was it because we worked a normal schedule, had lives, and got to bullshit with officers all the time?

Currently shooting an M&P357. It’s not the best choice because of some of the vagaries of the rules and scoring, but I like shooting it. I’m probably going to pick up a Glock 20 (10mm) for my go to “game” gun. Maybe a 1911 of some sort. Gotta make some $$$ first though.

And yeah, I think the normal hours/life/etc pretty well sums it up. lol. Call it sour grapes. They indoctrinate that “pogue” scorn pretty hard at SOI too.

I’ve actually got one of those at my desk right now. It’s my dad’s, and he wanted me to put some Hogue grips over it. This thing is brutal on the palms!

Oh, well if that’s all it is, SEMPER FI! I hear you though, even in the wing, Avionics was always the best because we were (in our minds) better than the knuckle draggers (flight line mechs) and the hydrolic guys. And don’t even start with the S-shops…haha

It’s not too bad. I used to have one. Here’s the wife blasting away with it.

4.26.11

Finally got into the gym for squat day. Lower back was acting up the last day or two.

squat - the one and only squat rack was taken, so my 531 plan took a back seat and I worked in with the dude that was there.

225x3,3,3 all e
275xm
295x1e
315x1m
335x0f - almost had it. Came out of the hole pretty good but lost lower back tightness, chest went down and that was it. Need more GMs and lower back hypers.
315x1h
225x3

front squats
135x3 (cross arm)
155x2m (clean grip)
185x1m
205x1m
225x1m
245x0f went back to cross arm grip for these, since my wrists were killing me from the clean grip. Clean grip does seem to work better, more stable.
