Just wanted to drop by and say what’s up, been lurking for awhile and finally got the notion to sign the F up.
Pretty new to powerlifting and the ins and outs of the game and I’m currently on my second mesocycle of 5/3/1 as my end goal is to compete. First raw then geared (wanna drive manual before going auto) if you catch my drift. any tips that anyone can offer? this program seems pretty straight forward and easy and I really enjoy it though I had to tone down the OH presses.
I’m a medically retired OIF vet finally getting back into lifting weights only physical issues I have is my shoulder, but it doesnt seem to effect my bench or anything just my OH press.
I’m 5’11 277 pounds currently sitting at about 305 bench, 390 dead and 315 squat (shameful to say my squat isn’t low enough but I’m working on it) Pretty much a light weight in the totals departmet so I hope learn more here and other places.
Welcome to the game IronHide. Where in NC are you? I’m actually moving down to Raleigh in 2 weeks and there are some really good gyms down in that area.
Where are you lifting now?
You could throw in a bench variation instead of overhead pressing, but a lot of pressing power does come from the shoulders so you’d have to make sure to try and work shoulders through your accessories. A good bench variation is closegrip benchpressing. Also, don’t switch to powerlifting in gear :P.

I actually live in Raleigh presently, what are some of the places you’re looking at?
I’m looking at Iron Pit Gym actually. It looks like my kind of place. Where do you train now?

Iron Pit is awesome. The owner is a ridiculously nice guy. I used to train with them for a few months and competed at a meet they held. Definitely recommend it.
I train at the facility I work at right now - Capital Strength and Conditioning. More of a personal-training / group strength-training focus there though.
There’s also Raleigh Barbell, which I haven’t been to yet but they have a team there and all the equipment you’d want. Similar to Iron Pit, I’d expect. Probably just a matter of location convenience which you’d want to go to.
