You should read about the velocity diet, then you would be able to shed even more pounds and not lose any strength - plus you’d look jacked.
One thing I really hate about this site is that people have such a narrow view of what’s required to do well in any specific physical task. And if the persons training doesn’t fit with how they believe it should be done they immmediately discredit someone who has made a great achievement.
Comments such as “what does he squat?”, “I wonder how fast he can run”, “what do you mean you don’t need legs” are COMPLETLY irrelevant.
It’s like going into a powerlifting thread and saying “I wonder what how efficent is freestyle stroke is”.
I would guess that Jason really could care less about how big and strong his legs are. I love all the arm chair critics who post on this site saying “you HAVE to squat to be capable of anything physical” when they probably barely even out squat Jason (and lets not forget he’s only a 16 year old 185lb’er, who’s still benching close to 300lbs btw!).
I’m a powerlifter and I realise the limitations of powerlifting training when it comes to task not specifically PL related (ie Pull ups). If the people who are slagging off and taking cheap shots at Jason actually competed in any strength sport (PL, OL, BB) I’m pretty sure they’d realise they’re not as shit hot as they thought they are and would have respect for a fellow competitior.

I agree with that part.
It’s this part I don’t agree with:
I got significantly weaker,
And I would have to say that I, myself, would not want to plan a routine that would weaken me. I will, however, assume there will be some loss of strength when (not if, but when) I reduce calories because I want to reduce BF and see what I’ve got “under the hood.” But I don’t intend to stay in a “weakened state” once I’ve reached my goal; nor would he, I assume. He had a specific goal, and now he’s beyond that and resuming lifting with an eye toward progress.
I also have to say that “I got significantly weaker” is truly a matter of perspective. I mean, he freakin’ did 2000+ pullups in 12 hours! Yeah, when I get so “weak” that I can do that, I’ll post a video! ![]()
So you agree getting significantly weaker is never good.
Dude… it was temporary. He had to get weak to lose weight, then he did a bunch of pushups and broke the record. He had to accomplish one goal before the other… what are you seriously arguing about? Seems like… you just like to argue.

First of all I was not talking to you. But since you chimed in it seems that it’s YOU who wants to argue.
Secondly, he broke the record for Pullups not Pushups, try to pay better attention.
Finally, as all who know a dam thing about training (this leaves you out) know that it’s NEVER a good idea to make yourself weaker to any large extent, before a strength (or even a strength endurance) event.
Now go spend your time where it will do the most good…um water the flowers or change a light bulb in your Moms basement so that you can see the computer screen better.

What is endurance strength? Last I heard they were two different things… Anyway, I understand that my making myself weaker was a clear sign of my ignorance in the field of fitness, and will try to become better informed before the next time I break a world record.

Burn!
hi new to site name stephen hyland (GBR)
it was my record that jason beat, since then guy schott (usa) beat jason with 3116,
and on sunday i reclaimed the record,
with 3750 which
I did in 8hours 3mins no breaks and this is the break down
existing 6 hour AWR 2456 new record 2968 I reached the old record in 4hr.49mins appox
I also set a new 8hour record for GWR 3733
existing 12 hour AWR 3116 new record 3750 i reached the old wr in 6hr.22mins appox
existing 12 hour GWR 2222 new record 3750
existing 24 hour AWR inaugural 3500 now 3750 time taken 8hr.03 mins check out web page
I could have gone on but my hands was a tad sore plus all the people had had enough and all wanted to go home and have dinner, it would have taken about 30mins to sort out the hands to carry on but as I always say leave some in the tank keep them guessing i also hold the 1hr 767 and the 30min 442 as for jason how he trained for the record work for him all i do is is eat any thing i like,
and train as hard as i can and when someone beats my records i set about taking them back and push the bar a little higher i will be 55 in august so age is no barrier,by the way i don’t just hang around all day,my sport was xt comps,
so little weights & lots of cardio ie ultra-fit,only started back training at42 having done no sport for20+ years, and a great docter who fixed my shoulder, well nice to have visited site and reading the various comments some very amusing do enjoy the banter ps it was only due to getting my shoulder fixed that got me
doing chins and dips as i had to build the muscle up around the shoulder after the op funny how things turn out.
This is awesome. I love Pull-up World! I’ve been a big fan since their second album.
Jason and Stephen - good lord! You two are absolutely amazing!
Stephen’s post demonstrates such unbelievable understatement I thought the whole thing was a joke post (till I checked the world record site):

Do you guys have websites? Stephen, how on earth did you train for this? I mean, more exactly.
Cheers and all the best to both of you.

First off saying you dont need legs is like every frat boy talking at once. No I cant do what he did nor do I have desire to train for it.
Eh. I think going for a pull up record is one of the few times you wouldnt want more muscle on your legs.
Good job guys Jason trained like you told him to now hes lost the record.

Agreed. The haterade on this site is astonishing. This kid’s feat is a great physical accomplishment that I doubt many of us could do. I don’t understand why everyone has to nitpick over every little thing, it’s like their way of knocking people down a peg.
If Jesus Christ returned to earth tomorrow half the people on this site would claim that resurrection is nothing special and then they would start bickering about the color of his sandals.
It seems to me that if you had the athleticism that would allow you to perform so many pull-ups you could spend your time pursuing something … cooler. It’s completely impractical. I’m sure the guy is in great shape.
That’s my point. If you’re fit enough to do thousands of pull-ups in a day, you should have used all that time spent doing pull-ups training for a real sport.
Yikes, pull-up champions coming out of the woodwork for this one.
Someone get me a hot fitness model doing assorted sexual feats thread stat!

I agree with both of you. I’m new to this site/forum and, frankly, I’m appalled at some of the responses to Jason.
As far as whether pullups are a “real sport” - I assume many of the posters here are either powerlifters or bodybuilders, neither of which seems particularly “useful” or “practical” or even “natural.”

Respect to you man, that is the subtlest comeback i’ve ever seen. Dam, you just put that guy in his place.
If it was Tiger Woods of some other huge name in sports that just broke a world record, no one would say they didn’t know what they were doing.
So why are a select few people picking on this kid? Id sure love to be a world record holder that didnt have a clue!

Can’t the same be said of weight lifting?
Should all the bodybuilders, powerlifters, olympic lifters, strongmen etc start training for a real sport?
