New Program Questions. 5/3/1 or Starting Strength?

So, I posted something similar a while back, and i think strongmangoals responded with 531?

But I’ve been doing some research, and I want to actually start a program to stick with for a while.

I’m stuck between 531 and starting strength.

Which one is more practical at my stage?

I’m about 230lbs
350 bench
375 squat
420 deadlift
Overhead press… fighting off injury for now.

Ive never really followed someone else’s regimen, short of the Darkhorse from Brian Alsruhe, and I didnt complete that (fuck that was hard).

So I feel like committing to an actual program will benefit me significantly. So… give me some advice.

5/3/1. IMO is your best bet. Besides it not a single program but a approach now. Unlike SS

Dont get me wrong, I think Rip is an encyclopedia, but it’s all so… pretentious, dogmatic, you name it. It’s hard for me to follow something that someone says there is just no other way.

I actually just wrote out a whole program based off the Triumverate or whatever, that’s actually listed in one of the tnations articles. I figure I’ll run that for several weeks, and order 5/3/1 forever in the meantime. I like how it’s over simplified, plus I despise excessive accessory bullshit, so… its sounds great.

At your level? 531, the method is pretty versatile. SS is mostly good for very weak beginners.

5/3/1 is cool because it gives you guidelines to “link” your training together.

If you’re just getting started with Routines or Programs, the Triumverate is really straightforward and a great way to get started.

Also, with a “press day” you can actually spend some time figuring out how to fix your shoulder without just skipping over it.

When you get through with that you can try the 5/3/1 versions of other “famous routines” like 20 rep squats(Building the Monolith) or Dogg Crap (Rest/Pause Challenge) or Full Body Training ( Hardgainers Template) etc, etc.

You’ll always know how long to use each routine and what weights to start with so there’s no wasted time.

Thanks for the advice guys. 5/3/1 definitely gets a lot of love, so there must be something to it. Even if it is just over simplifying something that doesn’t really need to be complicated. I’ll give it my best effort.
