New Dog Pound!

I agree with the reverse of Drews statement. I believe all great combat soldiers are athletes. And since I agree that sports were meant as a training ground, and then a substitute, for combat skills, I feel that the greatest soldier of all time is also the greatest athlete. Thusly, the greatest athlete of all time is Tejimon, better know as Genghis Khan, leader of the Mongol Hordes, the most dominant ‘team’ in the history of the world. Tejimon could stratagize, motivate, and lead men better then any five coaches (from any sport), combined. On top of that he was also a fearless, and bloodthirsty, fighter who never lost a ‘match’ to any other human. His power as a warrior and leader was so great that it led to such a mystique that most of his intended battles never occurred, because few would face his Horde, even if they had superior numbers. This is the equivilent of the a NHL team getting 41 forfiets while only being able to play one or two men down. I’ve rambled enough. To summarize, Tejimon was the greatest athlete because:

Combat soldiers are athletes.
He was never beaten.
He lead men ‘like’ a general.
He shunned regular bathing.
He ate a diet almost exclusively meat.
HE WAS THE BADDEST MAN IN THE WORLD .

The several people who list JIM THORPE are correct, yet none states the obvious reason he is the HANDS DOWN WINNER…In addition to be a GREAT Football, Baseball, and track athlete,(as well as a mighty fine dancer)…
He won not just the Decathlon, but the Decathlon and the Pentathlon IN THE SAME Olympic Games… 15 grueling events…
Never been done before, never been done since, never likely to be done again…(I prefer the vanilla Thanx…)

What do we look for in athletes: 1) role models 2) people who can view situations from different points of view and make a descision in a split second 3) people with a variety of talents who know how to make good use of them 4) people who are eager to share what they have learned and have acheived and are winners physically and in the heart…
So while people don’t usually consider PARENTS as athletes they do encompass the latter points.
If it weren’t for the years of role modeling and encouragement, taking the kids to the baseball games, handling a full-time job and then coming home to take care of a full house and then on top of all that finding time to workout …
Think about it.

Miguel Indurin : 5 time Tour de France champion. He controlled those Tours like nobody. If he’d come back, he’d still be able to win.
Ben Jonhson : 9.79 sec. for 100m dash. And if you look at the race, he slowed down, a little ,at the end. All that with very little drugs compared to others. Could he of gone faster in the years after of course.
Ingemar Stenmark :Swedish Alpine skier, who won two gold medals at the 1980 Olympic Games. He was born in Tarnaby, Sweden. At the1976 Olympics Stenmark won the bronze medal in
the giant-slalom event. He then won the overall World Cup championship in 1976, 1977, and 1978,becoming the second skier to win the championship three consecutive times. At the 1980 Olympics Stenmark captured gold medals in the slalom and giant-slalom events. He finished second in the
overall World Cup standings each year from 1980 to 1984. Stenmark retired from World Cup skiing in 1989. During is career he won a record 85 World Cup races 1974–87, including a record 13 in 1979. He won a total of 18 titles. Is 85 WC wins will never ever be surpassed. Best skier ever period.

We remember some athletes because of their remarkable world records - Roger Bannister’s sub-four minute mile, Bob Beamon’s 8.90 m. long jump or Ben Johnson’s 9.79 s. 100m - that pushed the limits of what was believed to be human possible. But eventhough remarkable in their own right, it is always just a matter of time before world records will be broken. True greatness does not steem from what athletes do in competion but from the impact they make on the lives of other people. That’s why I suggest Nelson Mandela as the greatest athelete ever. Nelson Mandela may not have been a world class heavy-weight fighter, in fact, he never reached the international level. However, the physical strength and discipline he got from his boxing career was an invaluable source of courage and power during his years in prison. Even after 25 years imprisonment he wouldn’t renounce his struggle against apartheid in exchange for his personal freedom. Mandela was without dubt the greatest fighter ever in the true sense of the word.

The name has already been posted once… ARNOLD!!! He is without a doubt the most qualified of any to recieve the title. Lance Armstrong is amazing, but who gives a shit about pedaling a bike? Mohammed Ali was the greatest boxer hands down. And also the best at talking shit too! Jim Brown killed at football and lacrosse. Michael Jordan is one hell of an all around athlete. But ARNOLD is one of those rare individuals that everyone knows who you’re talking about with just their first name. He single handedly launched an industry. Yes, Charles Atlas had a hell of an impact too. But almost all of us run to our computers on Friday night to see the newest T-mag. We spend thousands of dollars a year on supplements. We kill ourselves in the gym, garage, basement, shop, or wherever we happen to lift. And who doesn’t have a picture of ARNOLD plastered on the wall? (next to Monica Brandt of course). He has been the motivation for entire generations of men to want to do whatever it takes to look as good as him. Hands down, ARNOLD is “THE MAN”!!!

i change my vote.
i have to give it to Andy Hug.
andy, for those of you who don’t know him, was a kickboxer from switzerland. he was a big favorite in japan and europe, and fought in the prestigious k-1 tournament.
andy was 5’10" 210-215 ripped to the bone. he was a small heavyweight competiting against giants(jerome le banner for instance is 6’6 260 lbs. and ripped) and more than holding his own. he was one of only 4 men who have won this tournament. this can be a brutal competition allowing kicks to the leg, body, and head, knees to the same areas, and of course punches to the body and head.bone on bone clashing.
andy died today at the age of 35 from acute leukemia and bone marrow disease. he’ll be sadly missed by the kickboxing community. he was truly a t-man.

Well, I am going to wins the little contest hands down!!! The greatest athlete of all times is without a doubt “BRUCE LEE” No one even comes close. No one on earth has ever matched his strength (compared to his size of course), or his undying and overwelming will to be the best martial artist to ever live. Granted, he was not a bodybuilder but he was an athlete and had great phisique too. On top of that he could beat the shit out of almost anyone in the world, including muscle bound freaks like all of us on this website!! So give him a little respect and send me my grow!!!..I’m waiting!!! Great site…thanks!

Wayne,I’m sure I will not have to say the last name but he’s from Brantford/Ontario,this guy controlled the game in the books and on the ice,no one in our life time will every beat his 2000 plus points.

Without a doubt, the stylin’, profilin’, limousine ridin’, jet-flyin’, kiss-stealin’, wheelin’-dealin’ son-of-a-gun, 15 time world heavyweight champion, The Nature Boy, Ric Flair! WOOOOOO!

The greatest athlete is FRANK DUX! This guy was a beating ass machine! If you want to know the story on FRANK DUX, just watch the movie BLOOD SPORT.

P.S. He didn’t kick ass on the movie screen, he kicked it in real life. That’s a fact.

The best athlete ever has to be Stephen Redgrave of Great Britian (rowing). He has won a gold medal in the last four Olympic Games and is going for his fifth straight in Sydney. Until earlier this year, he had been undefeated in any race, including heats, semis & finals since 1990. His boat was beaten only because they had major regattas for four weeks straight against fresh competition each time. More impressive though, besides him still being competitive in a sport like rowing for so long (instead of something like shooting or equestrian), is the fact that a few years ago, he was diagnosed with diabetes and Crohn’s Disease. At 6’4" and about 225-230 solid lbs. he’s still in pretty good shape for a guy who’s 38yrs. old. And on the ergs (the rowing machines) he is still competitive with athletes who are 15 years younger than him (faster than 5:55 for 2000 metres-just try to beat that next time you’re in the gym!)

Babe Ruth. Let’s see Mark McGwire hit 70 home runs drunk off his ass!

I like the answer of Frank Dux. That movie was the shit and his records are incredible but I have never seen him fight. Parents and other political figures are not athletes, very influential and critical but not athletes. Stop trying to find this great answer no one has though of. The question was for an athlete. My pick was Bo Jackson and still is but no one has nominated Tiger Woods yet. Interesting.

Besides me ?? (My weak ass 160lbs of wimpiness !!!)

JIM THORPE…I know that this is way old school, but he kicked ass in Pro baseball, football and the Olympics !!

Lyle Alzado, followed closely by Ben Johnson. They went the extra mile and they took the extra gram.

The word athlete can be defined as “One trained in acts or feats of physical strength and agility, as in sports.” The term athletics is traditional reserved for track and field, where the greatest attributes of athletism; speed, strength, endurance, power, flexibility, and agility are staged. The event that embodies all these characteristics as well as having the winner at the Olympics being declared the “The world’s greatest athlete” is the decathlon. The combination of various running, jumping, and throwing events completed in a grueling two day mental marathon, is athletics at its purest. In terms of a timeline in which to choose the athlete which best personifies “The world’s greatest athlete” the reining world record holder would have to be the most logical choice. He is the one that has maximized the attributes of athletism to its highest degree along side advances in training theory, technology, nutrition, pharmaceuticals, and psychology. Therefore my choice for the world’s greatest athlete must be no other than Tomas Dvorak from the Czeck Republic. The world record holder in the decathlon at 8994 points.

I guess he’s not really the best ATHLETE but I’d have to say I admire Tiger Woods- I know, I know but not for his abilities (heck I don’t even like golf), but for his attitude, He was being interviewed and said something his taught him,to the effect of: “If I make a mistake out there it’s MY fault no one elses”. I admire him for having the guts to just own up to his ‘mistakes’. I think we as a society have to much of the “it’s somebody elses fault, not mine” attitude instead of just owning what is ours and dealing with it. 'Nuff said

This was the toughest one yet. Of course, it would be near impossible to pick the single greatest athlete of all time given the different requirements of their individual sports. Then again, that’s what makes it an interesting discussion.

All the usual names popped up: Michael Jordan (ESPN’s choice), Ben Johnson, Michael Johnson, Lance Armstrong, Arnold, Wayne Gretzky, etc… All great choices, too. I even like Tiger Woods as a choice. Hey, he’s put on over 20 pounds of muscle in last few years and has used it to make more money than God. Gotta give it up to Tiger for bringing some muscle to golf! Bruce Lee was awesome (I still have a poster of him in my home gym), but if you’ve read Charles Staley’s old article on the Dragon, you’d know a lot of his legendary feats were, well, legends. Still a bad mo fo, though!

Some of these athletes I had never heard of before, but they certainly deserve the Testosterone stamp of approval: Stephen Redgrave, Andy Hug, Alexander Karelin, Terry Fox, and Naim Suleymanoglu to name a few.

In choosing the winner, I wanted to pick an athlete who overcame more than the challenges of his sport. I also wanted to pick a guy who participated in a major, world recognized sport. The sport that defines the Olympics, that is perhaps the purest of any athletic endeavor, one that all children participate in almost instinctively, is sprinting. These guys are not only fast, they’re strong, and most of us would kill for a sprinter’s physique.

There have been a lot of great sprinters, but only one had to face Hitler. As if being black in 1930’s wasn’t difficult enough, Jesse Owens had to prove himself to Hitler and ultimately the world. Jesse Owens faced the world and won.

The free tub of Grow! goes out to Todd Wilson. Good job! Thanks to everyone who participated. We’ll do it again soon. - Chris Shugart

Okay here it is… THE BEST SO FAR. Im not affiliated with anything except some martial arts a while ago. Boxing: Ability-Roy Jones Jr. Power- Mike Tyson. Speed: Michael Johnson, Jesse Owens and CARL LEWIS. BasketBall- Kareem and Chamberlin, Jordan and last but not least Spud Webb standing only 5’7" the man won any slam dunk contest hand down… he could LITERALLY FLY/DEFY GRAVITY.
Fighters: Frank Shamrock, Saku, Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and last but not least boxer/runningback/wrestler. that person would have power/speed/size and skill. wahoo the end.
