Need For Speed

Yee Haa! 31 degrees Celcius (94 F), talk about sweating. The fluid was pouring out fast than I could put it in. Which held my skate to a 40km, but it was beautiful. Everyone on the trail was sweating and smiling. What an awesome day, my pace was great. I didn’t push to hard because my water intake was maxed. I’m just taking in the great weather, lathered in sunscreen and sucking up the fluids. Honestly, it doesn’t get much better than this. Little cooler tomorrow but the awesome weather is staying around for a while. Staying strong and really enjoying life to the max.

I wear a 2 liter one mountain biking - 'course there aren’t ANY water fountains around for me…

Spent the last two days catching up at work and coming up with a secondary goal for the month. Skating for distance is great but it does nothing for my speed. Being less concerned with weather conditions now. I have decided to keep my skates between 40-60km and work at increasing my speed. Todays skate will be my base speed.

Laid down a 55km skate in 2hrs 15 mins, there has room for a greater output of energy. This should really help keep me motivated to work on speed as well as distance.

There were actually a couple of hungry cyclists who thought it worthy to challenge my abilities. I gave them an “A” for effort as we cat and moused it for several kilometers. There endurance wasn’t quite what they thought it was and I was soon on my own again. All in all my skating is showing all round improvements.

I’ll wait until Monday to do my leg workout and skate. Tomorrow I plan on tearing up some asphalt. So I need to clear, lube and rotate my wheels, Zoom! Zoom! Staying strong because I have nothing better I wish to do!

Another great day, a little warmer and the sun was out. Had a little stiffness in my legs, glutes and lower back. Nothing serious so I started off with a fast pace. It was going to turn into a battle against the wind. I had a tail wind for only a short distance, which proved it had the potention to cause serious problems. The wind has at my back coming down the over pass into my favorite 110 degree corner. It was difficult to control and almost ended up with me planted into the stone wall. It sure was a thrill, all 4 times.

The rest of the skate had me in a cross wind. Basically I had to work hard to keep my pace. Managed to do a 55km 4 minutes slower than yesterday. Now I can’t stop eating, not that I mind. Fact I’m about to cook up a chicken, cheese and hot sauce omlet with toast. Staying strong, working hard and eating everything in sight, I love it.

Way to many distrctions this week, plus short an employee at work. Getting out to skate has been difficult but we finally made it. I am testing out some graphite bearing spacers for a guy down in Arizona. Today was the first test run with a 55km skate. Strong head and cross wind made it a workout but the smile was there all the way. Not sure how the graphite bearing spacers are holding up but I will continue to test them until I have 50 hours in or the break down. Since they are in the experimental stage I may be testing others if these don’t hold up. Graphite spaces means no more cleaning and lubing bearing, that would be so awesome.

Morning leg workout 8 am.

Machine squats: 230, 320, 410, 500, 500 @ 12 reps

Leg press 45 degree plate loaded: 590, 680, 770, 860 @ 5 reps, 950 @ 4 reps

Kick-offs leg press moving seat cable operated: 135, 150, 165, 180 @ 15 reps each leg

Leg extensions: 165, 180 @ 12 reps, 195, 210 @ 8 reps

Standing calf raises: 285, 300, 315 @ 12 reps

Seated calf raises: 135, 135, 135 @ 10 reps

Good solid workout, the leg extensions were really tough today. Went home and did some housework ate an omelet and took a nap. Woke up at just after 1 pm mixed up a smoothie and grabbed my skating gear. I hit the trail at about 2:15 and did a 40km skate. Had a blast, chased down a road racer at about the 30km mark.

Held his draft for abit and then went to pass him. He was having know part of that, geared up anf took off. I just slide into his draft again and decided to play with his arrogance. If I didn’t like his speed I just pulled up beside him, I did that three more times before he got up on his pedals and really cranked it. I was way to close to my turn around point to care anymore and let him go.

I’m getting some good speed with these graphite bearing spacers. They are supposed to get smoother the more they’re used. I’m interested in seeing exactly how they will hold out. Plus just what kind of speed I’m be able to generate from them. Looking for some fast times in the near future. Staying strong so I can go faster!

Streamline-- how long (timewise) are your typical skates?

[quote]SteelyD wrote:

With traffic lights, hills and congestion I get about 20kmh so I skate between 2-3 hours. Longer if I’m going for some big numbers. If I skate circle drive at the university I can get 28kmh, hopefully better this year.

Pushing the speed lately I have been doing a 55km in 2 1/4 hours on a calm day. Winds mean more work + less speed = stronger legs.

Cool!

Awesome avatar! How fast ya goin there?

Thanks SteelyD my daughter took the pictures. I was just doing 200 meter sprints for the photo-op so I was most likely doing between 25-30km, judging by how long it took me to stop.

Did a 45km skate today, with some great chases and awesome speed. Problem is my back feels like hell now. I’m rushing to get out and skate and not preparing myself properly. To much focus on making my guota and not enough on doing things right. I need to recoordinate my approach to making quota. I’m a little rushed because my daughter is back at her Kung-fu training which is pressing my time. I’ll get it figured out some how. Getting injuried will not help at all so I need to figure this out. Staying strong and trying to stay smart as well.

How’s the double push feel on the bew bearings?

Thanks kmc, if it wasn’t so much fun I’d never be able to motivate myself to this level.

Everything is working out great so far. I’ve been a little lazy on the double push. I should be getting my heel close to my glute before bring the skate back down. My energy level however is not up to par due to external circumstances.

It is this very same external circumstance that have kept me from visiting all of you. Short a worker at work, and will be so for at least an other week or so. Plus my daughters grad and everything it entailed. Things will slowly get back to normal and I will have the time to annoy everyone once again. Just to keep Captain irrelevant as busy as I am. Take care guys and stay strong.

A wasted week! I managed to back up into the corner of a 2X6 right on the tail bone. Only good part of the last week has been that the weather was lousy. Lots of big winds, cloudy days and scattered showers. Good thing is I can bend over without major discomfort now. Work has gotten back to normal so I’ll hit the gym in the tomorrow morning and get back a track.

I was able to get some body fat on over the last week, so I will have a reserve to draw from for a week or two. Easy on, easy off life is great. I am due a long run of awesome workouts, which I am looking forward to.

I’ve had to make some serious changes to my training. I can’t bring myself to skate on the trail anymore. The odds at no longer in my favor. I feel if I continue skating the trail I’m going to get smoked. I’ll either suffer a major injury or a fatality.

These are my Vegas odds, I skate the gauntlet eight times during a 50km skate, four times each way. There are five intersections giving the trail the right-of-way, that’s 40 crossings per 50km skate. I have to date this year had between 18-24 near hits from cars running the stop signs. My concern was great enough for me the complain to my area city counselor. The result was one cop standing by their car at one of the intersections for about 30-45 minutes during the afternoon commute. They weren’t even giving out tickets, just making a show of it.

The last two weeks I’ve had this feeling of pending doom, every time I’ve thought of skating. This has led me to change my training routine. Since I don’t plan on attempting a world record for another three years, for multiple reasons. I’m back in the gym four days a week, two leg workouts, back and shoulders and chest & arms Monday through Thursday and skate at the University’s Circle Drive Friday to Sunday and every other Monday. This will be much better for training, being that it is two lanes going in one direction and there are zero stops, giving me continuous skating. I’ll skate after six in the evening or around six in the morning.

I’ve been having an internal struggle trying to arrange a schedule that does not conflict with my daughters MA classes, or create a rush due to time limitations. Now that it is done I really feel good about my new routine. I did some light upper body yesterday and I’ll do the same tonight, get my upper body ready for some serious training. Looking forward to getting very strong and very fast, all is well in neverland!
