Need For Speed

BTW, how many calories do you get a day?[/quote]

I couldn’t be bothered to count. I wake up and start eating and I don’t stop until I go to bed. I try to pack as many calories into what I eat as possible without making it taste bad. Still single digits BF.

Today I let the hounds outs. It was time for some fun. It took a solid 15km to get the legs loosened up, the next 25km was what it’s all about, speed! I cranked so hard I got blisters. I’m starting to get alot of guys wanting to knuckle shake as they pass the other way. Lots of smiles from the ladies. Awesome complement from one at a traffic light, “You’re fast” I politely thanked her and she replied, “No, you’re really fast”. She had been behind me for several km’s and was sweating up a storm. Had one of those backpack water containers, I need to get one of those. We talked about the possibility of an overpass across MacKenzie Ave at the Trans Canada intersection. That will be so sweet, one less stop and one more steep climb. Didn’t see her again until my return trip.

Had to yell at a brainless idiot. I was coming down of the overpass heading into the gauntlet. He was stopped at the first intersection. I’d just passed three cyclists and was fast approaching the intersection as he started to wave a van through, I just screamed “DON’T!!” the guy dam near crapped himself. As I passed I yelled at him “It’s a fuck’n stop sign”. I’m pretty sure the three cyclists that were hauling ass behind me were in agreement. It’s bad enough having to dodge idiot drives without having idiots add to the cluster fuck that already exists.

I’ll be needing the Moleskin tomorrow, got a blister on my left heel and my right big toe. Three days off and nothing but sunshine and calm winds. I’m going to be in a state of bliss, I’m sure my face will be sore from smiling to much. Just 40km today, which puts me just over the half way point.

Tuesday evening I will be interviewed by the author of an up coming book titled “Fifty Athletes Over Fifty”. Anyone else interested in helping wake up the world to your sport can find his thread on, geezerjock.com he is still looking for athletes over fifty in all athletic areas. His name is Don McGrath and he’s a rock climber. I’m in for the free book and because my Ego is huge, not to mention there are thousands of individuals that need to be inspired to get out a live life. Staying strong because I’m about to become immortal, Hee!Hee!Hee!

May skate log: 405km Skate log: 2210km

I felt very strong and powerful today. Skating when I haven’t worked my ass off all day is a totally different experience. The hardest part of my skate today was putting my skates on, my dogs are so sore. It took a couple kilometers to numb the pain. After that it was a 60km solid, powerful, fast skate. For some reason the road racers are always going the other way.

Stopped a couple of times at the Gorge Inlet to watch the Dragonboat Races. They are really fast, twenty paddlers a sweep (steers the boat) and the drummer who pounds the pace. Great to watch, a race only took a minute or two. Then it was back to business.

WOW…that sounds like a great skate! Glad to hear your weather has finally turned for you Streamline. It got hot in a hurry here too.

Thanks DZ, sure is great feeling the warmth of the sun for more than a day or two.

Skating is hold until my feet heal. Everything except the heel blister has healed. It however is pretty bad and may take the rest of the month to heal enough to skate. I will use this time to get my gym routine back on course. My energy level is really high right now and I am becoming extremely cranky without my usual outlet. I’m not sure how much of this my daughter and co-workers can handle. I’m doing my best to stay secluded from everyone.

Did a leg workout this morning, that helped my mood some what.

Machine squats: 230, 320, 410, 500, 500 @ 12 reps

Endurance leg press (moving seat): 300, 320, 340, 360 @ 30 reps

Calf presses: 360 X 4 @ 12reps

Inner & outer thigh: 150 X 4 @ 15 reps

Spent the rest stretching and trying to refocus my goals. I’m sure the time off will turn into a benifit with healing time and all. Just looking for the positive side of things. Staying strong and hoping for a quick recovery.

Stream-- good luck with the healing. We all get cranky when we don’t get our vices

What do you do for your ‘thigh work’? Do you use the ‘good girl, naughty girl’ machine, or cable ad/abductions, or something completely different? I know just ice skating or roller blading for a day is a great thigh workout for me

"Good girl, Naughty girl machine, my daughter thinks that’s funny. Plan on adding cables then I can. They get used a lot in the morning. I don’t think I’ll be do 150 on the cables, yet!

Heel is healing quickly. Looking forward to the start of June and a 1000km month.

Leg workout this morning, the legs are feeling really strong.

Machine squats: 230, 320, 410, 500, 500 @ 12 reps

Leg press 45 degree: 590, 680, 770, 860

Kick offs leg press moving seat, cable operated: 135, 150, 165 @ 30 reps (15 each leg)

Leg extensions: 150, 165, 180, 195 @ 12 reps

That felt great, to bad the rest of the day sucked. Looking forward to tomorrow. Stay strong to feed my Ego.

Excellent leg workouts Stream! Glad to hear everything is healing quickly for you. I know you gotta be just itching to get back out there.

Thanks DZ, a bit of an under statement but yes I was itching to tear up the trail. So that’s exactly what I did. Heel was good to go so I went out and cut it loose. I didn’t even try to pace myself. Warmed up for about 2 1/2km and then I let the hounds loose. I tore at it for 30km, if it moved I chased it down and passed it. I had a blast, everything was on fire, legs, lungs and my wake.

I feel alive again. After a crappy week at work I needed to an outlet to blow off the steam or I was going to blow up. May has really sucked, one thing after another, so good ridance. Ended the month on a high note and am looking forward to cranking out 1000km in June. I have a great feeling that this is going to be an awesome month of working the legs and skating the trail. Staying strong because I’m going to need every bit of strength this month.

Streamline- great work! It is always inspiring to read your log. I can feel the intensity and fire in it.
It helps me, when fatigue and life start an onslaught!

Catching back up on you doings, stream. 1000 klics in one month sounds incredible. Hope the upcoming month is all you’re hoping for.

Thanks for stopping by Helo, it’s always great to hear from you.

It sounds like a lot, but concidering I skate 50-60km on average it only makes for 20 days of skating. Should give me several days off. Plus I can do shorter power skates on the days I do leg workouts. Need to come out of the gates strong and pile on the klics just in case the weather goes sour on me.

Tomorrow is a leg workout so I’ll most likely only skate 30-40km. Mostly though I’m just thrilled to be out skating again. Stay strong Bro!

Don’t we all know that feeling LittleStrick. Hope you manage to keep the spirits up high and the sun shining on your face. Work hard Brother cause life just keeps on getting better.

June 01/09 quite the day. Early start 6:30am leg workout.

Machine squats: 230, 320, 410, 500, 500 @ 12 reps

Leg press 45 degree: 590, 680, 770 @ 5 reps 860, 860 @ 3 reps

Leg press moving seat: 320, 340, 460, 380 @ 30 reps. Those were brutal!

Easy day at work so I was quite fresh for my skate. It was hot, sunny and very little wind, except the one I was going to make. Started off slow, not sure how the legs were going to respond after yesterday and this morning. Did my first lap at a solid pace and felt great, it was going to be a 50km skate to start off the month. Second lap was the start of the pursuits. Anything that moved got passed but no real challenges until the third lap.

Spotted a couple of cyclist at the first traffic light. Kept them in range between the first and second traffic lights. One was riding a cross country bike and was really guick off the lights. The second was a road racer with aero-dynamic bars. They both shot off real quick and I excepted the challenge. The road racer kept checking his six to see where I was. Then his pulled out and took the lead and was off. Took a kilometer and a maximum effort to catch the draft of the cross country cyclist. Not sure if he saw me or just sensed my presence. He quickened he speed which was great because the road racer was a good 100 meters ahead. I was solid in his draft and there was no way I was getting dropped. Caught my breath and had time to let the ATP energy build up in my legs. Did a slingshot out of his draft sprinted all out after the road racer. I had his draft in about thirty seconds.

I held his draft until we hit the little valley dip. Quick sharp drop and then the same back up with only a road width of flat between. I was solid in his draft as we started the drop, I did another slingshot and blew past him on the upgrade. They were both in my dust across the top and down through the tunnels. I blew out on the upgrade after the tunnels and they passed me about 50 meters from my turn around. All I heard was “Now that’s fast” from the road racer and a cross country cyclist just shaking his head. I was wasted, did my turn around and filled my water bottle at the fountain. Held a good pace on the return trip and got passed after the second traffic light.

I was feeling awesome and the chase was on. She had a good jump on me and I didn’t start gaining ground until the down side of the over pass. I ran the gauntlet hot on her tail. Pasted her just before the last interestion. Just as some bonehead in a flatbed does a slow crossing of the intersection. She was right on my ass as we veried around the back of the flatbed screaming at the asshole to move it. She never caught me until I slowed to do my turn around. I was starting to feel the results of my exersion in both my legs and lungs. With 3 quarters of a lap left I just let it go. Crossing the planked bridges was a torture session. The vibrations just brutalised my feet. The last 5km back to the van was sheer hell, everything hurt and I was totally exhausted.

My day wasn’t over yet. I still had to take my daughter to MA class, which ment a trip tp the gym while I waited. Shoved some food in my face showered and headed out. Did alot of stretching and a few sets of 3 chin-ups and pull-ups. I’m feeling very content at the moment. Tomorrow may be another story. Staying strong for moments like this.

June Skate Log: 50km Skate Log 2295km

You had a full day. Sounds like a lot of fun, Stream…

It was most certianly was a full day j_willy3. Today was a little less intense.

It was a 20km all out skate and a 20km I wish I hadn’t. Had a blast, I wasn’t chasing I was terminating. Just blowing by everyone and totally enjoying the awesome day. It was hot 29 C or 90 F, the sweat was pouring from my body. It was hard staying hydrated, I drank 500ml (a pint) every lap. The effort I was exerting was greater than my fluid intake. Therefore I spent the last half of my skate recovering from the first half. It was still a great time, just a beautiful day to be out doing anything. Staying strong for a reason I’m to tired to think of.

June Skate Log: 90km Skate Log: 2335km

Stream- Thanks for the temp conversion. Anymore I can’t do it in my head and have to break out the calculator.

Are 90 degree temps that common up there? I find that especially interesting since we have hit or broken 90 degrees only a couple or three times this year…in OK! It’s been really mild.

Nice work. That fact that you have to carry supplies on you makes it all the more impressive.

No LittleStrick, 90 is well above the norm up here. We are usually high 70’s with mid 80’s bringing out the whinners. Several lousy springs and summers in a row was them being quiet so far. Living in the “Garden City” usually has the gardeners out doing their rain dances after a week of straight sunshine. Right now I’m just relishing in the gloury of some amazingly great weather. Had to buy some 50 UVA protection yesterday.

Unfortunately the water fountain at the Gorge bridge end of my circuit is still off because of construction. Which means I only have a pint for the entire lap. This is okay generally, but with the higher temps the sweat will flow at an exceotional rate. Little cooler today with low to mid 70’s. Conversion of temps is double it and add 32, get one with in a degree and a bit, take care and work hard Bro.

And I was doing it the hard way…multiply by 9, divide by 5 then add 32.
