When I perform ab crunches/sit ups, I experience tension and muscle tightening in my neck, and am wondering how I can reduce this.

What kind of crunches are you doing? Do you have any previous neck probelms?
Just make a point of focusing on relaxing your neck and only flexing in your abs. Try to imagine you’re holding a tennis ball between your chin and your chest.
when your doing crunches or situps or any variation, don’t try to tuck your chin and pull with your head, keep your head and neck mostly straight, tighten your abs, and concentrate on JUST using your abs, dont bring your head into it.
when i do crunches, i try to almost thrust my chin up head backwards towards the ceiling, this will stop you from straining the neck. Also do abdominal exercises that keep the upper body neutral, like leg lifts, flutter kicks, hello dollies, etc.
Get the other neck flexors on the job and press your tongue onto the roof of your mouth.
Swollow and youre ready to go.
