Hey guys.
The other day I did something to my neck. I am not sure what it was that I did. I could barely turn my head to the right, and couldn’t put my head back. After a couple of days of loosening it up the pain went away and I thought I was fine.
I was doing dumbbell flies yestrday and on my last rep I was trying to get the weight up so hard, and I heard a small short tearing noise come from my neck. Almost sounded like somebody tearing paper. My neck was even more sore then the last time. I had a hard time even lifting my right arm up to around the level of my chest. Now a day later the pain is about as bad as the first time I hurt my neck.
What do you guys think I should do?
What do you think happened and is happening?
I train on a regular basis, go to school during the day.
Well I’m not a Dr but uhhhh… sounds of tearing in your neck can not be good. You should probably get that checked out. Don’t mess with your neck, my football career ended with a neck injury that wasnt properly treated and rehabbed and I still feel the consequences a year later.
Sounds like the first time was just another stiff neck. The second injury could be more serious though.
Seriously, go see a chiro and get fixed. Alignment issues can dog you indefinitely if untreated, and muscle imbalances resulting from them can be a bear to get rid of.
Go get cracked.
Thank you for all the replies. I decided to take everybody advice so I went to see the doctor today. Ahhh… thank god for Canadian health care.
Anyways, he did a bunch of tests and found that I pulled a muscle. It doesn’t have anything to do with my bones.
He prescribed a week off of lifting weights to let it heal. Mentioned alternating between compresses of ice and heat. He said that if it keeps reoccuring even after I have given it sufficent time to heal then I will need to go to physiotherapy. Unfortunatly physio is not covered by Canadian health insurance, and I have no health plan since I am not currently working. So I won’t be able to afford such a thing. Physio cost around $100 per session in Ontario.
Hopefully this will just heal on it’s own.
The next time I work out I will make sure to give my neck and traps a really good stretch before hand. Hopefully the rest and stretching will help.
Cyah guys
if you think it could be muscles tear and there is swelling in the area,
ICE IS YOUR FRIEND. then at some point you need to go get a massage to get the circulation up and the tightness out of the area so you can move again. Alot of neck problems actually stem from the shoulder area. Good stretching in about a week after you have been putting ice on it every so often will be loads of help.
My neck is great, thank you for asking. How is your worm coming along? Oh yah, its dead.
Anyways I started back up on my workout routine 2 days ago, thank jebus. Before I did the incline flies after doing push ups I did static stretching on my neck. Looked left, right, up and down and held for 30 seconds with a light stretch. My dad mentioned that he has done it before to, and putting a rolled up towel underneath your neck helps.
I guess what I was doing was drawing my neck back and flattening it. The rolled up towel should stop this from happening I think. Mind you the fact that I didn’t tear my neck muscles again might be due to the fact that I didn’t go to failure this time. Instead of the rolled up towel.

Oh yah, and tilting your head forward is what you did to. If I look down I find my neck becomes more flat.
When you get back at it warm it up properly, whatever “properly” is anyway…
Good luck
