Shit man, the Celtics signing Jermaine O’Neal is a big deal to me. They (and the Lakers) are quietly getting better in the offseason and I’m starting to believe regardless of what happens with all this free agency crap that it could very well end up as another Lakers-Celtics finals next year.
Agreed. If it works out right, O’Neal is the perfect fit until Perkins can return.
Personally, I’m still scratching my head on the S Blake pickup. ahead of Jordan, Fish and Shannon, and with Ridnour reportedly willing to take less??
Dude, let me enlighten you about the Blake signing strategy. It is absolutely the best move by the Lakers by a long shot to sign Blake first ahead of all three and let me tell you why.
When the Lakers look at their point guard situation, this is what they consider they’re ideal point guard in descending order of importance considering how they’re current team is set up with the triangle offense and the talent level that they have.
The ideal Lakers point guard has
#1 - a high basketball IQ
#2a - has defensive skills that can slow down other point guards
#2b - a pass first mentality
#3 - can knock down the long ball consistently at a high percentage
Farmar was never a good fit for the triangle offense and the Lakers have been as disappointed in his lack of growth as Farmar is with the Lakers triangle offense. He wants the ball in his hands as a typical point guard in the NBA today in pick and roll situations dictating a majority of the offense. He scores ok on #1, mediocre on #2a, mediocre to bad on #2b, and putrid on #3. Farmar is a little more athletic than Blake and can finish at the rim better but Blake is more consistent in decision making and tougher on defense.
Brown is not even a point guard so I’m not going to break him down. That being said, the Lakers will still have room to bring back Fisher (at a discount) and Brown unless some other team overpays him but not all three (Fish, Brown, and Farmar). Brown is the most athletic and he can definitely still play a useful utility role with the Lakers but Blake’s value far outweights Browns if you had to choose between the two for what the Lakers actually need at the PG position.
Fisher ranks best in these 4 aforementioned criteria ahead of Farmar and Brown and that’s why he got a majority of the minutes last year. That being said, Blake is 31/32 years old (2 years younger than Fisher) and can play 30 + minutes a night; giving Fish some needed rest. Blake still ranks higher than Fisher considering the four criteria I laid out but Fisher has an untouchable leadership role with the Lakers and playoff experience where he rises to the occasion.
So it’s not an either/or with Fisher and Blake. But by signing Blake first, the Lakers get a guarantee of not being left high and dry with none of their existing three guards (Fisher, Brown or Farmar). The Lakers just don’t want to pay Fisher another $10 million/ 2 year deal. They offered a 1 year/$2.5 mil deal. I believe both sides will work it out.
So it will be Fisher and Blake complementing each other. I don’t even know who will start and who will be back up at this point but I think it’s moot. The point is that signing Blake was a brilliant signing by the Lakers and he ranks high on all four criteria for what the Lakers need going into next year at the point guard position.
Does that clear it up for you? ;0
