NBA 2011-2012 Season Thread 2

None of that supports your statement that a single game with 3 turnovers proves he has completely solved his problem , it’s just flat out ludicrous to think one game’s stats prove anything in ANY statistical category.

I’m close to ignoring you WF-style your comments are so absurd.[/quote]

So you’re going to be like him by putting words in my mouth and taking discussions personally? I never said he completely solved his TO problem. As a matter of fact, one of the things I said it takes to lower your TOs was “experience.” But TOs are the easiest stat to fix out of all the other ones. You can’t change your FG% or rebounds per game (to name a few) to the extreme you can your TOs. That was my emphasis.

FYI, I’m a Finance student just starting my post-graduate study. My cumulative GPA was in the top 25 out of all students in a department of a Top 50 tertiary institution. I know about the ‘numbers game’ but most of the stuff I post is based on my personal experience either playing the game at a pretty high level for a long time and watching it extensively.

This is what I don’t get.

You go through 4 years of university, are taught how to apply mathematical and statistical concepts to the point where it’s hammered into you. How in the world can you turn off that part of your brain when you watch basketball?

Personally I can’t turn it off even if I wanted to. I would go as far as saying things I’ve learned while getting my education invade my thoughts even in the time not spent officially working.

Basically, if you have the tools use them.

I don’t even know what I said that abuses rational statistics so much. If people like scj want to argue that it’s too early to say anything positive about Linsanity and his future because the ‘sample size’ is too small then good for him, maybe Lin will eventually show his true colors. But who’s to say he can’t improve and actually better his current numbers?

I like how high school basketball in New Zealand is “a pretty high level”. Get, you’re an idiot.

Representing your school and ‘county’ (area) at the national level is not “pretty high level”?

I was a 6’4 Peja Stojakovic type shooter who could light you up outside the arc so I was never going to be recruited by a NCAA school, especially because I wasn’t super athletic. I played with guys that are playing or had played D1. D2 and D3 ball over there. We still get some exposure over here, coaches like Jaime Dixon (the coach at Pitt) still come over here to recruit players. He actually recently signed a dude called Steve Adams who scouts are saying could be a top 5 NBA pick in the future (7’2, freakish hands and he’s only 18).

So yeah, I’ve had some experience to which I can derive opinions about the game.

Alright guys, predictions on Lin tonight vs Heat? Will the trend continue?

Was just about to post about tonight’s game. I predict Lin will get his points and assists, but TOs are going to be high. Heat pull away in the third quarter and win pretty easily.

21/4/9 on 45% shooting and 8 TOs

I only hope for a competitve game, There is no way Lin is going to be able to check Wade, missing shumpert will hurt alot. Melo gives Lebron fits and for some odd reason that stiff Joel Anthony (I know I know hes in the NBA so hes not a stiff) gives Amare problems. All in all I expect the Heat to win, but I think it will be close.

Oh how can playing for your national team NOT be impressive or a relatively high level of play…you guys are being a bit harsh on Get.

New Zealand, St. Kits, Cameroon while I understand its not the USA its still impressive. Everybody should be able to have their opinions, I dont see why Get is getting flamed so much. Because of the TO comment?

There are like what, 6-7 regular posters in this thread. Only one hating is WF, I don’t know why scj is getting all defensive.

Im thinking Baron Davis will get closer to 20 minutes of PT this game…hopefully that will lessen Lin’s turnovers, but I agree if Lin gets his usual PT he may have a triple double lol.

Is there proof he played on a National team? Last time I checked pretty sure he said the highest level he played was highschool. Also, he’s never once said anything even remotely intelligent. He actually tried to argue that Brent Barry and Desmond Mason were better dunkers than a young Kobe Bryant. The guy is a fucking retard who has absolutely no redeeming qualities on these boards other than comic relief.

Anyway, I think they put James on Lin at some point and he plays him like he did Rose: sags 5+ feet and forces him to shoot. The problem there is Lin is a set shooter and I’m not sure his release is quick enough to make James pay. But, if he gets up on him Lin will do what he’s been doing: get buckets for himself and others. You could also substitute Wade for James in my example, though Wade wouldn’t give up as much space. I’ll say that if Lin and Stoudamire can run the p’n’r effectively and the game doesn’t turn into mini one-on-ones that the Knicks should win.

God I hope your last sentence is right. Lin is a surprisingly decent shooter but you are right he has more of a set shot and not a quick release. Its amazing what 2 amazing players can do for a team, because just looking at the rosters the Knicks have a better one.

When on teh internets I’ll assume people are telling the truth, there really is no way of knowing, I thought he said he played for his national team in an earlier post.

Look out for Tyson Chandler and Steve Novak. Tyson absolutely dominated the Heat last year.

It depends on the nation… You can’t just say “national level” like it means the same thing everywhere.

Big difference between a nationally relevant high school player in USA vs. one in Tanzania, correct?

He can play Lin tighter. Lin is athletic but not Derrick-Rose-athletic.

Side note… anyone watch LBJ capably defend Dwight in the post the other night? This is the same guy who took out D-Rose in last year’s playoffs. It’s just patently ridiculous how good he is, no other player in the league can guard D-Rose and Dwight.

Don’t try and say Josh Smith, if he could defend Dwight they wouldn’t pay Collins to sit on the bench all year until they play ORL in the playoffs and give him 30 minutes.

I’m not defensive you just have a lot of opinions that aren’t grounded in anything near reality.

I’m pretty interested to see how the Heat will match up. Do they put Wade on Lin and LBJ on Melo? Personally I would start Chalmers (even though Cole is better overall, Chalmers is better on D) and see if he is good enough to take out Lin. Not sure if he is or not.

Defensively, the Knicks will be challenged when Amare/Melo/Lin are all on the floor at once, especially without Shumpert.

I think the Heat win, but (can’t believe I’m saying this given how awful the Knicks were pre-Lin) I wouldn’t be shocked if the Knicks pulled it off.

From the context that sounds like AAU here. How does one rep a specific school or county at the national level? Maybe that’s their equivalent of All-State or something. That doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Hate or love the Heat… their transition offense is one of the most exciting things to watch in the NBA.
