some would argue that those 2004? rule changes (ie. outlawing hand-checks on the perimeter) have made it impossible to guard the truly elite PGs
and they would likely be correct when they cite this latest golden-era of PGs as evidence
rule changes definitely are a factor. impossible? no. very difficult? yes. but the fact is, most NBA guards can get their shot one on one whenever they want; factor in the new era of the “shooting PG” and you get what you have now.
I often talk about how many bad defensive point guards there are these days, but I wonder how much of that perception is really because of that rule change.
This is your monthly reminder that Michael Jordan once averaged 37ppg in a season that allowed hand checking.
I played when a hand check was allowed. It makes a HUGE difference. But you’re also seeing an era of the “scoring point guard” so the perception should be adjusted for that.
Greg Oden…we hardly new thee, If I was the Blazers he would get released…not his fault but this is ridiculous. I was very curious to see what kind of defensive force he would have become in the NBA…its a shame.

Just imagine a healthy trio of Roy-Alderidge-Oden.
A prolific scorer, a player who can post up and stretch the defense with a midrange shot, and a player who can lock down the paint on defense.
Kind of reminds me in a way of what the Bulls have going for them now. They would’ve been an elite team.

Remember when the Bulls drafted Aldridge and traded him for Tyrus Thomas?

Lin only had 3 TOs last last, which shows how easy it is to fix that line on the stat sheet.
Yes, no one who’s fixed a problem for one game has ever reverted to their previous norm after that single game.
edit: Like when Calderon fixed his problem with scoring by putting up 30 and now he does it every night.
Turnovers are the easiest facet of a player’s game to remedy. You reduce your TOs by becoming more experienced, listening to your coaches and just plain stop making bone-headed plays. Talented players make adjustments. Lin is a talented and smart player.

kid let D. Williams go off last night. he still had a decent night stat wise but elite PG’s in the league must be able to guard other elite pg’s in the league. in varsity high school basketball in some parts of the country, the pg must be competent enough to walk the ball up the court and make the first entry pass. in the nba, you’re expected to be able to pressure the ball (if you’re elite).
and sorry, if he can’t defend now, it’s not something that will drastically improve at this point in his career.
again, i didn’t watch the game, but i’m reading about this defense problem. “did not defend williams” - NY POST
Dude, why don’t you just tune into a single NYK game?
two reasons; lack of time, lack of desire. but i will try to watch a game.
I think we know the real reason you don’t watch pro ball anymore.
I never realized how good of a defensive player JR Smith could be.
Lin should have 8 assists by now, I don’t know whats wrong with Amare but he is getting his shot blocked all the time.
With this roster and I know Dantoni doesn’t like it, but he might have to go with a 10 man rotation when Shump and Walker gets back…somebodies gonna lose some PT.

bodyguard: any tips for improving your game for a fellow baller? (:
is that a serious question?
yea, why wouldn’t it be? o.O since you mentioned you played pro before, you must be have had/have skills! (:
i’m actually trying to get into my university team.(although sports in singapore actually…sucks. alot more emphasis on education. i believe most good college teams could destroy our national team ): but i still love the game!) maybe something you felt helped you most? shooting, ball handling etc.
skill work is very important - see “10,000 hour rule”. if tremendously talented pro players are hoisting 500 jumpers a day, what is your excuse? fix any mechanical flaws before embarking on that work. same with ball handling - do the the variety of drills, they work. basketball IQ is important - how to set picks/screens, spacing, where you should be on the court etc. (fundamentals). And the biggest? ALWAYS PLAY WITH AND AGAINST THE BEST COMPETITION YOU CAN FIND. work on quickness and physical factors to within your genetic limits. become a student of your position and learn how to play it.
wow, the 10,000 rule is hella crazy. so far i’m only making 200shots/day. damn, it’s time to up my game. thanks! definitely gonna to try and play against better players. in my experience, it has also give me more confidence and helped me to learn more.

still waiting…
Because as a baller who game so close to making it you can’t bear to think what could have been. And watching the NBA gives you nostalgia of you in your prime.
Or maybe I should stop reading books on psychology and cold reading =/

I don’t get what that picture is supposed to mean? I’m not taking as some wheel-chair quarterback - I played basketball in high school over here at the national level.
Oh and so much for Lin not being able to shoot.
Ok, remember how Brandon Jennings was hot for his first month, everyone said “wow he actually can shoot”, then he had 2 straight years shooting under 40%?
And how Rubio was hot for 3 weeks, people said “wow he really can shoot”, now he’s shooting like 35%?
GIVE IT MORE THAN A MONTH TO MAKE SHOOTING JUDGEMENTS!!
Maybe I was wrong and he’s a good shooter… maybe I was right and he’s a bad shooter… even if he was shooting 35% though, and proving my point so far, I would still say it’s too early to judge because that’s the truth.
I wish we could come to a pact to not make any more decisions about his true talent level at any facet of bball until the damn season is over.

None of that supports your statement that a single game with 3 turnovers proves he has completely solved his problem, it’s just flat out ludicrous to think one game’s stats prove anything in ANY statistical category.
I’m close to ignoring you WF-style your comments are so absurd.

The thing is, if they are ignorant to mathematical and statistical concepts I don’t really see a point in getting upset. Plus, it’s fun to ridicule them when they say something absurd.
Getinitdone isn’t a troll, he just doesn’t know any better. Plus, why didn’t you threaten to put Bonez on ignore after he couldn’t wrap his head around the importance of OBP and the lack of credibility of RBI and RS?
Edit: IMO the quality of this thread diminishes if certain parties have each other on ignore.

The problem only arises if you ignore someone logical just 'cause you don’t like what they’re saying. Get has never once said anything even halfway intelligent. He gets laughed out of every single thread he posts in yet continues to post the same ridiculous shit over and over. If he was a troll I’d probably be more understanding, but he honestly has no idea of what he’s saying and is flat out wrong about damn near everything he’s ever said here, so I ignore him and am able to have actual discussions without headache inducing irritation.

the truth is, even growing up as a young player, I never watched much. My idol then was Dr. J and I’d watch the Sixers but not much really. As a high school player, I rarely watched and I never watched college - not even the schools that were recruiting me.
The only time I felt like you think is when I went to an exhibition Nets game in the late 90’s. I almost couldn’t bear to watch. I felt the same way when Matt Maloney (who I played pretty often with one summer) was enjoying his relative success in Houston - that one bothered me more than all the other guys I knew in the league.
I still don’t watch much except playoff time and then it’s sporadic but that’s just because I was never a big “fan”. I watch mostly high school basketball now since my “nephew” is a top prep star on a top ranked team. And sitting there doing that fucks my neck and back up!

Because I care less about baseball than I do about basketball and don’t check the thread nearly as often. I try not to start arguments in threads I’m reasonably sure I won’t check for 2 weeks.
I’m obsessed with fantasy baseball and follow the Nats and a bunch of baseball writers that I like, but, for some reason I have less desire to talk about it with randoms. I dunno.
