NASA and Muscles

Hi there,

I have been reading all of T-Nation’s articles for about a year now and I finally joined the forum. I am 23, live in the Netherlands and I’ve been weightlifting for about 3 years now. I have learned a lot from all the authors on this site, much more than on other sites. (which I won’t mention so I won’t insult anyone)

In the past I stayed away from bodybuilding forums. I rather like to train than to talk about it, not that I’m that big do. Now I have a question so I subscribed.

While I was searching the web for research, funny youtube movies and porn I came along research done by NASA on muscle contractions and muscle growth with a very weird result about isometric contractions. Here below:

“To their surprise, Baldwin’s team found that while isometric exercises did prevent leg muscles from withering, they did not stop a decline in the amount of contractile proteins in those muscles. The muscle was actually degrading on the molecular level.”

Now I know there are different kinds of muscle growth, but how come this difference with the other movements? It are still contractions, right? And isometric can build strength AND mass according to other research, so what is going on???

PS: If this is not the right place for such a question I am very sorry and please let me know where I can post it instead.
