Afterwards or on off days, makes perfectly sense to me since most prof. athletes do it that way.

ps: for making the squat “easier”, I found the squat-specific stretch/mobility exercises (“opening the hips”) suggested on MWOD very useful.

I do both, foam roll everything then move on to bodyweight squats and squat stretches if needed, though since I started foam rolling I have needed to squat stretches a lot less. Now if I forget to foam roll, warming up feels a lot harder, even when I am doing what used to work before I started foam rolling. I keep a mini-foam roller in my duffel bag.
