dont even worry about 60 minute sessions of cardio my man, doing stuff like that is “holy shit im competing in 4 weeks and im behind cardio”- you should use a little cardio as you can to get results
I’m panicking like you were 4 weeks out yet I have until the end of June haha

I’m totally a worry wart
shelby starnes had a quote on his facebook that said

“dont peak to early…said no one ever who came in shredded”

so the moral of the story is to get ahead and stay ahead with your conditioning

im thinking of competing in september and my current off season weight is 191-192-- im thinking of doing a 20 week prep to come in around 170-175 lbs, this time shredded and dry

you want to avoid being behind if at all possible.

Thakns for advice Grind, yeah I’m trying to do this mostly through manipulating nutrition.

Awesome quote and sounds look a good plan!

My prep will be 27 weeks, got away with no cardio up until now but gotta up the gear now!

Totally what I did, I was a similar bf% to you so it was enough to just eat the right macros for a time!

See for a natural I’ve actually heard/read discussion about how peaking too early is a real danger, because you are risking more muscle loss than your assisted cousins, especially if you are ‘peaking early’ on nothing but protein, no fat no carbs. Every day you spend in those very low bf% ranges not feeding your body is time your body has to decide if it wants to keep muscle or not, and even the slightest mess up could cost you.

Falling behind is almost certainly even worse, because then you have to make drastic changes that will almost certainly cost you muscle, but peaking early isn’t exactly something you should strive for every comp prep.

ive never heard that

also, getting to a point where you are eating protein only is a last ditch strategy- it would be much better if you can keep carbs and fats in the diet for as long as possible–hence why we want to get a head in conditioning

Peaking - refers to the water/sodium manipulation going on in the last week.

In terms of getting shredded, you don’t have to worry about “peaking early” As long as you are dieting intelligently, you will continue to strip off more and more fat. You are not suddenly going to bloat up like a whale or get fat without drastic changes. So if a (intelligent) strategy is working for you, keep at it and you will keep getting leaner.

Now, of course, tweaks need to be made if you stall, but that’s another story.

And by dieting intelligently, I mean a few things:

 1. Training heavy to provide stimulous for maintaining muscle
 2. Attempting to keep calories/carbs as high as possible for as long as possible (milking each step of the way)
 3. Attempting to get as much fat loss out of your diet before resorting to cardio

That’s not meant to be an exclusive list, just general guidelines.

Lost 1lb last week, so I’ll stick with the current calorie intake. Can’t get rid of the stiffness in my spinal erector which is killing my training right now. Oh and I took body measurements 2 days before I started cutting that I guess I’ll throw up on here when I get the chance. It will be interesting to see when I retake the measurements where most of the weight came from. Once again I know the mirror is the best way to tell just out of my own curiosity.

These are all taken unforced with no pump, idk if you typically take measurements while flexing or not but whatever.

Abdomen-39.75
Chest-45
Arm-16
Calf-15
Thigh-25

I meant unflexed not unforced

no point in taking measurements when ur in lard-mode imo but hey…

whatever makes ur dick wiggle

i would ditch the “bulking” and “cutting” style… it’s severely outdated and generally does not work

it really just gives lazy people an excuse to play slapdick with their nutrition and get fat as fuck.

Word.

Out of curiosity, what would you recommend for me immediately after my show? I’m around 177 atm 5 weeks out. My thoughts are slowly climbing back up to 190 for starters with some good ol’ carb cycling. by slowly, I mean…idk…1/2 lb a week?
take it slow for sure and be conservative.

carb cycling would be a good call

or you can just do what i did and hire shelby for a year and see what he thinks lol
If I get a stable job as planned, I’m actually gonna put my money up for Layne. As a natty, I can’t do this low carb bullshit anymore.
Excuse me if i’m wrong jskrabac, but you had a fitness modelling style prep thread months ago didn’t you?

How has your progress been since I can’t seem to find said thread? Sorry if I am wrong!
Great progress. Although, it seems like natty’s have a hard time with Shelby. Some of the feedback I’ve seen from others made me to decide to avoid having him as a coach anytime in the future.
I definitely fall into the category of “natties currently having a hard time with Shelby” I suppose. I’ve stalled out several weeks in a row now and I’m not sure how much longer before I say enough is enough.
what do you mean by “stalled out”?

my experience was pretty rough too but i loved it…

weeks 10-14 of my 16 week prep looked like this:

meals 1-6
7oz cooked chicken (or equivalent in whey/egg whites)

3 fish oil caps every day
2 primrose oil caps

800-1000mg of caffeine on training days (5x a week)

2 hours of cardio every day (EVERY DAY)

no carbs…no fats…basically spent most of the time wondering where the fuck i was lol
FUCK

THAT

LOL, i wouldnt know, but im cutting right now and i could never bring myself to do anything that drastic. I’d wither away.

me 1.5 years ago right before I started training. Just some perspective I guess, had to dig this one up today.

is an eel the new shoe?

Haha yes! I may have just started a new requirement for pics in this site… It’s actually a weird looking shark believe it or not

That’s what sharks look like before they bulk

This week I actually ended up going back up a pound without changing my calorie intake. So would you guys recommend another drop of 500 per day (3500 total for week), or should I go slower this time and only drop by 200 per day (1400 per week). I need to clean up my diet a bit more, I don’t eat anything too terrible but once in awhile I’ll have something that is pretty crappy. I feel like as my calorie requirement gets lower that isn’t gonna fly.

Just so you guys don’t have to look back in the log I have only dropped my calorie intake once and that was 500 per day. This resulted in a 3lb loss the first week, and a 1lb loss the second week, and now up a lb.

How are you tracking your weight? Are you weighing once a week or every day?
