i would ditch the “bulking” and “cutting” style… it’s severely outdated and generally does not work

it really just gives lazy people an excuse to play slapdick with their nutrition and get fat as fuck.

lee priest did not do anyone any favors with that kfc transformation lmao
Word.

Out of curiosity, what would you recommend for me immediately after my show? I’m around 177 atm 5 weeks out. My thoughts are slowly climbing back up to 190 for starters with some good ol’ carb cycling. by slowly, I mean…idk…1/2 lb a week?
take it slow for sure and be conservative.

carb cycling would be a good call

or you can just do what i did and hire shelby for a year and see what he thinks lol
If I get a stable job as planned, I’m actually gonna put my money up for Layne. As a natty, I can’t do this low carb bullshit anymore.
Excuse me if i’m wrong jskrabac, but you had a fitness modelling style prep thread months ago didn’t you?

How has your progress been since I can’t seem to find said thread? Sorry if I am wrong!

Great progress. Although, it seems like natty’s have a hard time with Shelby. Some of the feedback I’ve seen from others made me to decide to avoid having him as a coach anytime in the future.

I believe Grindovermatter had a pretty shitty time doing a prep with Shelby as well.

He’s prepping for his first show. Has a log here.

Shelby is a fantastic coach

IIRC grindovermatter was having a tough time because of all the water retention he was getting in his lower legs (no idea why that was happening to him)

i dont really know why that happened either–but the reason why i had trouble towards the end of the prep is because i got very stressed and i didn’t put myself in a good position (i came to shelby at 11 weeks out at 205 lbs–and i needed to lose about 30 lbs to be in contest shape) shelby did his best for for the situation i presented to him- but the last 3 weeks was too much for me to handle and my body started to react badly

as for as the lower body swelling- the primary cause of this is a mystery–it was likely a combination of factors i think. these days i wake up with veins in my calves- which didnt happen once during the prep lol

im adressing this issue by staying leaner so ill have to kill myself less for next prep.

Right. I’m not trying to discredit him at all. Just going off of what I have seen. You gotta have a coach that works for you.

i think the reason people have an issue with shelby is because he’s so used to dealing with serious bodybuilders who compete at the top level that he forgets that some people are whiny pussies who want results without the work lol.

To be honest I would like to hire him for specific reason his preps are meant to be rough, would prefer it being a struggle and knowing I gave it everything rather than it seeming too easy and questioning if I could have tried harder.

haha, it’s hard to not feel that way when you watch this interview and you can tell his own prep was gruelling to no end.

Quick question guys. How far along in your cut do you start to notice strength losses? I’m only down 3 lbs and I had a shitty bench session, I know it’s too early to pin it to weight loss but it madero wonder when I would start noticing.

exactly… people seem to think this shit is easy, my prep was a bitch (shelby even told me it was a brutal one), but i can’t even imagine what he had/has to do

and BulkNcut, dont worry about strength… is going to go down that’s a guarantee, but you can’t let it get into ur head

i noticed it almost instantly

Thanks for the answer, it was not what I wanted to hear haha. I’m gonna YetAnd not worry about it like you said. I feel like if I start thinking about it it will become even worse. Sucks cause strength is my primary goal but I guess I can get my numbers up pretty quickly once this cut is over. Hopefully

Strength may go down, but you want to do your best to maintain it. When I was dieting, it gave me reassurance that I was doing a good job maintaining my lean mass as long as my strength was up.

For me, I could maintain an intense workout and hit decent numbers, but my endurance was way down as I got leaner and leaner. The sensible thing to do at that point, in my opinion, is cut out some of the volume work. Or drop weight after a few heavy sets.

So instead of:
Bench Press
250x3, 5 sets
185x10, 3 sets

Maybe do
250x3, 4 sets
185x10, 1 or 2 sets

OR

Bench Press
250x3, 2 sets
235x3, 3 sets
185x10
175x10

So you still get some work at your top end of strength, but you just don’t have the expectation of having the same level of strength endurance. I hope that helps.

If you are smart and allow carbs around your workout, you can maintain strength and lean mass very wel.

Can a loss of strength be acceptable on a cut if the training methods were changed?

I was doing 5/3/1 for years then started mountain dog for my prep and some lifts have suffered

Thanks mcbride. I’m taking Surge Recovery during workout and usually a large carb meal after. Once I stop losing weight with this new calorie intake should I drop by another 500 or less?

I definitely fall into the category of “natties currently having a hard time with Shelby” I suppose. I’ve stalled out several weeks in a row now and I’m not sure how much longer before I say enough is enough.
