My First Competition

There’s an amateur strongman competition coming up in a few weeks in my area and several people from my gym are going to enter for fun. I decided to enter too. But here’s the kicker, I’ve never trained in strongman before :P. I’m entering just for fun really, but because I train primarily for powerlifting there’s a little carry over. The 5 areas of the competition are:
180kg farmer’s walk (90kg in each hand)
200kg Super Yoke walk
80kg log press
Van pull
and one other thing which totally escapes my mind at the moment.

What are some of the best tips you can give me, primarily on technique?

Oh, and if it matters, I’m only 17.

van pull wear the right shoes!

Log press when you try to clean the weight sit row/deadlift the log up into your lap sit down fairly low the log is up high on your chest, than you kind of row/roll and stand up extending your hips to clean the log. when you go to press the log keep your elbows high and press the log back behind your head.

Go on youtube and search for videos of the different events, you can see who is doing it right and who isn’t

Practice the events themselves. SM is so much technique. I PL’d for years and just did my 1st SM contest last week. It was an eye opener. Whereas PL is pure 1RM stuff the strength endurance component of SM is much greater. In PL 10 seconds is about your max time for exertion. SM is 45-90 seconds depending on the event and the conditioning aspect is much greater. I too only had a few weeks to train for my SM comp. I could have used 8-10 weeks prep for sure. In PL I was always strong but lacked explosiveness so DE moves were helpful for me. In SM explosion is at least as important as pure strength. I’d focus directly on events and strength endurance
