How can my father lower his A1C (glucose) levels he got back on his blood test? He scored a 6.1. He is afraid he is gonna get diabetes. His day starts out by drinking a cup of coffee, drinking the protein/oatmeal shake im kind enough to make him, and then drinking beer ALL day long. The next time he eats is usually late at night and he chows down on anything he can get his hands on. out of a box, chips, cake, anything.
BTW, A1C is an indicator of average blood glucose levels over a period of a couple months. It won’t come down overnight.
Maybe he should check his fasting blood glucose once every morning when he gets up. That’ll give him a good idea of how bad (or good) he’s doing. And he’ll get almost immediate indication of how his changes are working.
An A1C of 6.1 is great, if your already diabetic that is…
As a type 2 diabetic he simply has to eat low carb / high protien / low fat meals regularly through out the day.
He can pick up a blood glucose monitor at Walmart and start checking his blood sugar when he wakes up, before meals, and about 2 hours after a meal to give him a good idea of how his body is reacting to the amount of carbs he is taking in. If he keeps a log of his blood sugar readings and shows his doctor it would be a good indicator of his diabetic statis.
It will take about 2-3 months for his A1C to show a change but the doctor probably won’t do another test for about 6 month anyways so he has time.
The sooner he makes these changes the less likely it is he will suffer any complications. Good luck!
BTW, in case his doctor wasn’t clear, the complications of uncontrolled diabetes range from amputation to blindness, so there should be a “scare factor” there.
