Muscle Snatch, Coaching Cues

sounds sensible, good luck! too many people are in too much of a hurry to put weights on the bar and have horrible/dangerous technique. looking forward to the vids!

AnytimeJake is that video you posted from a CF gym? Please tell me so. never seen somebody snatch with bent arms before…

But to your original post these things helped me the most (102/131 at 76 after 3 months of self coaching, so I’m not good by any means and will need a coach soon, just want to show you can make some progress on your own):
-Lots of empty bar work, I do some in the beginning to warm up and some at the end as a cool down/technique practice
-Watching videos of Chinese/Russians in comps and training
-Lots of mobility work
-Hitting the lifts every day
-Lots of warmup sets before working sets
-Breaking the lifts down into pieces to isolate weak points, if any

I’ve been in the habit of doing my hang cleans from my knees, stick my butt back, and then drive my hips forwrd, and clean the bar to my shoulders. This is a horrible technique I’ve been using, but it works my hips, and upper back, with lots of carry over to deads, and squats. The problem is I’ve been doing my cleans this way for so long, it’s ingrained, and when I go to snatch my body wants to do that motion.

Anyway was suprised how sore my traps were from my snatch session, I didn’t think the snatch would hit my upper back the same as the cleans, but even with the lighter weight I’m sore. The main problem I’m having is learning the movement from the floor, like I said I’ve been doing my cleans, and high pulls from the hang, so I’m struggling with learning timing on initial pull, as well as right at the end where I’m not sure how far under (deep) I should dip, if any. I’ll spend a couple weeks working on these every other day, then I’ll get my wife to make a video, to see where I’m at. Thanks again

Sore traps = doing something right  re first pull it’s about control/position and setting yourself up for a powerful/explosive second pull/catch. Your hang technique doesn’t sound bad. Maybe try sets of 5 gradually getting lower on each rep? Narrow grip OHS will sort you out too!
