MR Prime Time: Holiday Version!

Maybe not so much for a beginner, but I would definitely focus on periodization for anything from an early intermediate on. I don’t even mean simply periodization of the weight training, but of nutrition, supplementation, restoration, etc.

For a beginner doing the “Man with a Plan” article, that routine is still pretty sound. I might include a little more single-leg work into the program, but other than that I wouldn’t change too much. Add in some cardio, watch your diet, and call it a day!

Shit balls.

I had typed a lengthy question but it got messed up, so I’ll make it short.

Is periodization necessary for fat-loss specific training, especially for a beginner?

How has your exercise prescription changed since the “Man With A Plan” series on Dr. JB’s site? How would the basic trainee workout carry over to a beginner seeking fat-loss? Would the amount of exercises, sets, reps, and rest periods be appropriate?

Not so short : ) Thanks in advance,

PS

I’ll hang out an extra 15 or so since my internet connection was billy-jacked earlier!

How long ago were the dislocations? What is your flexibility like now?

As you know, there’s an inverse relationship between the mobility of a joint and its stability. If you feel that things are not stable, I would not be stretching around it! Instead, focus on other techniques such as massage, ART, etc. to get the range you desire.

The dislocations, for the most part, were many years ago. The last was about 2 years ago while doing a handspring.

My mobility is good. Stabilty is improving fast. It just that ext rotated postions when both the shoulder and elbow are 90*. I can do windmils and bent presses with a 53lb kb and everything is stable. Thanks for your help.

I should mention I’m not Buffy, I’m her husband. Looks like she was logged in and I didnt realize it.

Mike,

Would you care to add a comment from a professional about BeefCakeMD’s squat form?

Here’s the link to the thread where he posted a side view clip of his squat form:

Thanks in advance for your input!

I think I injured my lower ab while sprinting and making abrupt stops
the pain was in the left side of the pubes.
I stoped running and lifting till it healed now I’m pain free but I want to strenghten that part of my bod.
how do I do it?

I looked around and I believe I have a sports hernia.

thx

Kai Zen,

I actually PM’ed him directly, but here’s the gist of what I said.

Basically, I love the fact that he goes deep, but I wasn’t sure WHY he went that deep for powerlifting purposes. As well, there appears to be the slightest bit of lumbar flexion in the deepest squat position, which is of some concern. When he comes up he does have a lot of torso lean, but he seems to maintain his lordosis. It’s kind of tough to tell d/t the plates.

I told him to maybe cut it just a little bit higher and focus on leg/thigh work to take some of the stress of the low back.

If you have a sports hernia, you need to get it checked out.

Regardless, it sounds like something that would at least require some ART to get rid of the scar tissue that’s probably in there. Check out a good chiro, PT or ortho that does ART or some other form of deep tissue work. Good luck!

Mike, it is a Federal offence to call someone a Mountie when they are not. :stuck_out_tongue:

To confirm, Stu McGill is at UW.

BTW-I have never seen a traditionally Uniformed Mountie in my life.

I’m not sure what school Stuart McGill is at (I think it’s in Kitchner/Waterloo), but that’s the only school I can think of.

Perhaps you could ask BARR? He’s a Mountee in training, ya know!

One more question, I’m interested in taking exercise science to further my education (I took a good fitness course at College). The problem is finding a good school in Ontario, Canada. Do you know of any?

MR,
What kind of stretching/exercises would you suggest doing in order to gain a full ROM in ATG squats. I can do a full front squat while maintaining a neutral spine but cannot do the same with a back squat. OH squats are also very hard for me to do- I am not even close to parallel before I am pulled forward by the weight and feel a huge discomfort in my shoulders. Would practicing these movements be helpful? Thanks,
