WHERES THE WHEELS
A while ago there was a thread about lifting methods (I think somebody was trying to defend squatting 3x a week, like in a Starting Strength routine), and someone asked for a picture of me to prove I wasn’t clueless. So I posted up the one on the left here, and I believe it was Cephalic_Carnage that told me I had pretty poor lat development LOL.
So I set about to change that. I think I’ve done an ok job so far.
For me, the most important thing in building my lats has been overloading the stretched position (actually this has been true for chest as well). I do my chins with a wide grip, do barbell rows on top of a box and lower the bar to my feet, and I always use the tallest pulldown tower; all for the sake of getting the biggest stretch I can (while maintaining a muscular contraction in the lats… if you lose tension in the lats during the stretch, you aren’t doing a god damn thing for them IMO).
Just a thought for you guys. This thread was probably dead before it even began, for whatever reason, but I’ll post a few more things that I think are important in case some newbz want to read it I guess.

I remember Mr. Popular’s first few posts. He came across as a newbie to BB, he also came across as a new user name for Goheavyfool. I’ve since decided they are probably not the same person since I don’t think the Goheavyfool could have contained himself for this long.
HO-LEE-SHIT
Goheavyfool…the most epic troll ever spawned by T-Nation…and that’s saying something.
One of Zap Brannigan’s final acts on this site was exposing him for LOLZ.
For some old school mr popular:
Haha, my how far we’ve come.
And for everyone who thinks I’m “hating”, I recommended him for the TCA. Just poking a little fun.

It’s really no different than now, there were just a bunch of people (most of whom don’t post on this site any more, go figure) that said two guys working out together had to be gay.
LOL! Yes I remember witty banter… we’ve come a long way indeed. I think we were so excited about finding a real gym in town that we wanted to go all-out with everything (starting a log, eating huge meals together, do a kind of crazy routine lol, etc.). For those of you that don’t know, eeu is my training partner.
Anyway, witty banter was one of those “learning experiences”. Though it was nice to be able to see the progress I had made from 130 to 180 (1-2 years of semi-serious training), putting the pictures up for everyone to see was “humbling” like I said.
You could say that I was one of those guys who had to eat and lift for a year just to look average. Nowadays, as far as all-around development goes, eeu and I are probably somewhere in the top 15 of lifters are our local gym.

However, I do think there has to be SOME middle ground. Too many people have emailed me on here and personally and on Facebook saying they also were disappointed that they didn’t get the results they sought when they simply “ate big” and “lifted big” which is about as complicated advice that Professor X has offered concerning how OTHERS (besides himself) should train. (I’m not saying this in disrespect to X, but that’s what I’ve seen.)
Yeah, this would be called bullshit. There is a whole thread above about how I train where I also answer questions from other people and not once has my advice simply been “eat big lift big”.
That is flat out retarded.
Yes, most people do need to keep it simple especially as beginners and sometimes they DO need to just eat more and if that is the advice they need, that is what they get…but to imply that this is all I say here is complete and total bullshit.
On a total sidenote: I could have sworn there was some guy in this thread who posted a comment like “least deserving sole thread ever.”
Where’d you go guy?
Did you delete your post when you realized I actually lift?
Did you really think the guy that made the first bodybuilding forum sticky, created the Offseason Bodybuilders thread, was one of the first people in the T-cell, and has been generally very helpful and knowledgeable throughout the forums was just some 150lb turd?
I don’t think I’m super awesome or anything, but damn man.

A little Tnation history right there ^
fuckin '10ers starting dumbass threads that dont deliver. (this thread, not the link)
I remember that thread lol it was a little infuriating…
I had just began bodybuilding, and thought I was getting good advice from some guy, and was disappointed to find out he wasn’t who he claimed to be.
And then, for some reason, everyone decided to start saying I was him under a different name.
It made no sense then and it still doesn’t now, and I can honestly say that I’m baffled some people still think I could be this random dude who came and went years ago.
As far as not delivering… all I can do is post pictures of myself fully chunked up for now, and assume you all can tell that I lift weights.
My apologies for bringing that up, MP. GHF was clearly a different person from you. He made posts on relationships and stuff that you, at 16 at the time, could not possibly have made. I should have given it more critical thought before I went and posted out my ass.

It’s fine, I really don’t care, but I’d prefer to keep this thread about bodybuilding.
I think popular/X’s themesong should be Chelly - Took the Night solely for the refrain of “hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, I don’t care what bitches say, I don’t even look their way.”
Its pretty awesome to see dudes like popular/BONEZ for the fact they match my (and I’m sure several others who just don’t post)‘s frame. They aren’t 6’ monsters or 5’ 7" and 245lb, but they’re solid and they’re not bullshitters. Plus, they know what the shit they’re talking about.

As far as frame and genetics go, I definitely consider myself an average joe. Average height, small-to-average frame, average means.
I don’t have the genetics of a Waylander, or the natural leanness of a kingbeef, or the blackness of a ProfessorX… Nothing particularly special about me except my eagerness to learn and intensity in the gym.
5’9, wingspan 6’1, weight 200lbs, thick hip bones, zero bicep peak, toothpick calves. Yet here we are I suppose.
and here I thought you were a genetic freak

Popular, you do help a lot of people in the Beginner’s Forum as does Bonez. But I’ve never questioned your physique or knowledge because what you posted sounded logical to me. Now that I see what you look like, very very impressed. Not that we didn’t like that monkey with a giant nut sack, but you’ve taken on a new persona with the avatar change.
Very good thread. What your training looks like these day and what are your best lift ?
Just wanted to say it’s awesome to see what a great job you’ve done and I’ll definetly be following this thread to hear what you have to say.
Looks like you live up to your screen name, Mr P.

I have squatted from day 1, and I attribute barbell back squats to 90% of my thigh size. The form wasn’t very pretty in the beginning, but I got some pointers online and did my best, and definitely went below parallel.
I still remember being in my parents garage, being ecstatic at the thought of squatting 115lbs for the first time, because it was almost my bodyweight.
When eeu and I started lifting together I definitely forced the same squat mentality onto him lol and the results are pretty clear when you look at his avatar. There is nothing we have done more of, or done more consistently, than back squats.
I also feel that this needs to be said: You do not need to squat a ton of weight in order to build the thighs. I am no powerlifter by any means, in fact the most I have ever squatted is only 365lbs.
In a recent interview, Matt Kroc (a world-class powerlifter that has squatted over 1000lbs in competition) admitted that his legs were his weakest point going into bodybuilding… not just his quads either, his entire thighs.
In terms of growth, there is a world of difference between (1) sitting way back, with a wide stance, shins perpendicular to the floor, barely hitting parallel, heaving as much weight as possible from point A to point B… and (2) keeping your torso closer to vertical, squatting down below parallel under control, feet shoulder width, feeling the stretch and contraction of the thighs, repping out to the point that you feel like puking (I have numerous times).
Second to squats, for me, has been lying leg curls and romanian deadlifts. At my best I repped out with 365 on RDL’s, but I don’t know how many or how long ago that was (haven’t done them lately). Conventional deadlifts have always been awkward for me (pulled 4 plates about a year ago, never really cared to push this much), and I feel that better exercises can be done for the back and hamstrings.
Calves have always been a weak point for me, because for years I didn’t train them at all, and even now I must admit that I’m not consistent with them. Sort of hard to get excited about training them I guess lol.
This clip pretty much sums up my thoughts on squatting in bodybuilding:
