I actually call my gym an instagram gym. And I’m convinced many there are influenced by Bret Contreras (not a bad thing per se).
Yea it’s fucking annoying. T Nation actually had an article on the phone zombies
selfies are banned at the gym I use. No texting or talking on the phone while occupying equipment. Videos of PR attempts are encouraged. Bringing water is mandatory, as there is no air conditioning and it’s in Texas. Re-racking weights is mandatory.
Find a better gym, they’re out there.
My gym is basically the opposite, no rules about phone use, but videos of lifts are absolutely prohibited. Pr attempt or not.
I think this is what nearly everyone wants in a gym that considers them self even a semi serious lifter. Sadly I think the opposite of this is more common.
The gym I used to go to spent the money to make everyone happy.
Big new building with machines Db and bench presses for gym bros. No deadlifts allowed.
“Chalk room” where dead can be performed, weights can be dropped, squat racks, regulation benches for powerlifters or wannabes.
Up stairs is a CrossFit area where ppl are performing cleans, snatches and all their thera ball/kettlebell/weird crap they come up with for “functional training”
There’s also some strong man implements here and there. Tires outside. Farmer handles, axel bar, no log however.
If you have multiple personalities when it comes to lifting it’s perfect.
Shit… The gym I go to is wall to wall thots, phone addicts and wannabe Instagram skanks. Its so fucking annoying. Zero awareness or courtesy from these p.o.s. I have a solid home set up but enjoy some of their equipment and astro turf.
I find the phrase ‘wannabe skank’ unexpectedly funny. There are enough desperate guys that being a skank shouldn’t be that difficult.
dude there are so many better gyms across the country, in every state. You’re clearly going to a chain where this is standard behavior. You may have to drive a bit to go to one that is better, you may even pay a little more, but if it’s a priority, you’ll make it happen.
For awhile, I was driving 45 minutes each way to a strongman gym 4-5 days a week to train. I’ve seen others drive even further. This is while running a company and taking care of a toddler. But it was worth it to me because once I got a taste of a ‘real’ gym, I just couldn’t make myself go to the chain gym that was 5 minutes from my house most days.
Going to a great gym changes EVERYTHING.

Not a chain but unfortunately it’s just full of douchebags and phone zombies. Totally ruins my mood. I won’t last much longer there.
I have a home gym set up and got a planet fitness membership for the summer while it was brutally hot. Can’t exactly get in a brutal squat day but If some hot chicks want to wear yoga pants and show off their tits while I do curls, I’m all for it at this point in the game.
